I show a Rufus Tucker in my list, married to a Florence Eugenia Perkins in 1856. He died in Raleigh, N.C. in 1894. Perhaps there is a relationship. Some Tucker genealogy might be in order. I don't show any Sylvania Perkins though. ----- Original Message ----- From: <TeleEar@aol.com> To: <PERKINS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2005 3:45 PM Subject: [PERKINS] Sylvania Perkins B. 1757 Halifax Co., NC | Looking for any information concerning parents of SYLVANIA PERKINS b. 1757 in | Halifax Co., NC. Thank You so much for your help, Maestrowz & Pat Perkins. For many years I thought that Martha Perkins/Pirkins was David's daughter, but then again I thought that she might be the daughter-in-law to David. So much speculation, so little time! Ha, ha..... If anyone out there in "PERKINS land" has anymore info or ideas, PLEASE send it my way. RE: WILLIAM JOHN PERKINS born May 4, 1876, New York City. I am looking for descendants of my grandfather's brother: William John Perkins born May 4,, 1876 in New York City, New York. He married Mary E. ? , born 1879 in New Jersey. She was a practical nurse and lived (in 1930 census) in Cliffside Park, NJ with her son, WILLIAM JOHN PERKINS, JR. born 1899 in New Jersey. William John Perkins, Sr. 's parents were; George Perkins born 1843 in Upton Pyne, Devon, England and Charlotte Stones Perkins. born in 1851 in Doncaster, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. George Perkins, Sr. was in the British Navy 1856-1859 and immigrated to NYC in 1860. He enlisted in the US Civil War 1865-1866 in the NY State Militia and fought in Virginia during the war. George lived in NYC & Brooklyn from 1860 until 1899 when the family moved to Hudson County, Hobokan, NJ where he was a cooper and Jersey City, NJ, where he had a grocery store & lived upstairs. They had 4 children: Fannie Perkins born 1873,William John Perkins born 1876, George Perkins, Jr. born 1878, and Charles Henry Perkins born 1879 (my grandfather). George and Charlotte moved to Barryville, NY about 1906 where they had a large boarding house overlooking the Delaware River - with their daughter Fannie Perkins Livingston & son-in- law Lionel Livingston. I am researching William John Perkins born 1876 in NYC. His wife Mary E. ,a nurse, and son William John Perkins, Jr. was a magazine artist on the 1930 census in Bergen County, Cliffside Park, NJ. Does anyone know this family? Jeanne and Fred Linley jlorf@bellsouth.net http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/i/n/Jeanne-L-Linley/index.html http://www.jeanne.us.ms
I apologize, but I inadvertently deleted the last message on this subject, so don't know if the poster found his answers. It was obvious to me that he had searched the census and found his David in the poorhouse in 1850. I'm not sure if he/she had census searches for the previous years, so did just a little bit of reconnoitering.... There is only one Perkins found with a soundex search in 1840 in Orange County - David PIRKINS, age 50-60, females in house are ages 20-30 and 70-80 (one each). Oddly enough, no males. In 1830, David Perkins, living in northern district (as in 1840): one male aged 50-60, one female aged 5-10, one female aged 10-15 and one female aged 50-60. In 1860 the Martha that appeared in the poorhouse is listed on page 24, Chapel Hill PO, 197/174 PERKINS Martha 36 Nancy 16 Andrew 12 David 10 Fanny 8 Flora 6 This sure sounds as though Martha was David Perkins daughter and had all these kids without taking fathers' names. Wierd but possible. I would suggest trying the www.raogk.com site and looking for a volunteer in that county to search for David's will or Martha's will. It appears that the older woman in 1830 and 1840 was David's wife and that he was widowed before the 1850 census, but these are all assumptions without proof. Good luck on your hunt... I connected my George Perkins born October 1809 in Virginia to the Perkins in Greenbrier County, Virginia, who apparently were there since about 1750. I am not sure where the Perkins of Greenbrier County, Virginia, in 1750 came from. George Perkins married Agnes Allen. I am very sure she was the daughter of Richard Allen of Surry County, NC who was born in 1780. His father was a Thomas Allen in Surry County, NC before 1780. The Allens went to Wayne County, INdiana from Surry County NC probably about 18206 and Perkins went to Wayne County, IN, from Gallia County, OH, previously of Greenbrier County, VA. It seems to all be coming together for me. Not tied down 100% but the correct families and locations have been identified I am very sure. Thanks! Curt Older

Dear Pat, I just went through some pages I copied on my own Perkins family and did not find reference to yours, but thought that you might check this source yourself. I discovered two years ago that most of the Perkins/Pirkins/Purkins families in North Carolina were Quakers. Many were read out of meeting later on, but almost all of them started this way and most were originally from Pennsylvania or New York. Try checking the "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy" -- by William Wade Hinshaw. There are several volumes and it is usually found at most good libraries. The first volume deals with "records and minutes of the thirty-three oldest monthly meetings which belong, or ever belonged, to the North Carolina yearly Meeting of Friends (where records are still known to be in existence)". I knew that my particular group was in the Hopewell meeting in Guilford county, so I did not copy all of the Perkins pages within this and the other volumes. Donnell
Pat, I don't see a David Perkins, born 1775 in any of my line. There are many, many David's...we like to recycle names. Actually, it is a Scottish/English tradition to name the first son after grandpa, second son after daddy and additional sons after daddy's brothers, so genealogy can easily get confusing. The earliest David I show died in 1733. He shows up on a will as a witness in 1690, but I cannot trace him beyond that. His grandson, David, is in my line. This David was born 1733. The next David I show was born in 1815, and is again the grandson. I have been gathering together the work of several cousins. My information is located at http://home.alltel.net/perkinssw The password/phrase to get to the genealogy pages is "we are family", with spaces. Please don't share it outside the family, since living individuals are included. The "Perkins" link after the password takes you the bulk of the information. Anyway, let me know if you find a link to what I have. I'm always looking to expand it. Have managed to get back a bit further in my Perkins history. I'm looking for descendants of George Perkins and Hannah Marple. George was born c.1809 in Pencombe, Hereford and Hannah was born in Ible in Derby. As far as I know they had sons George, Charles, John and Francis and a daughter Ann. My Perkins line descends from John who married Harriet Tyler and they had George, Edith, Chas Jno, Frank, Lottie, Harriet and John, but I know that Francis had several children, not sure about the other children of George Snr. Would be grateful for any links to this family. Sue Perkins Rarangi, New Zealand
