It is if you think there will be information you don't know on their SS application i.e. Parents names, the address where the person lived when they applied, their date of birth, etc. Also, I just listened to a lecture this week by an archivist in the State Government (a nameless state so they won't be embarrased...LOL) who said the SSDI starts with 1960. So if people died before that, they will not appear. Likewise, I'm sure some of those who died before then never collected social security. Some probably had pensions. Retirement existed before Social Security but sometimes it wasn't very pleasant and sometimes, just like now, the people never really retired. They left this job and went to that one.
