They had approximately 13 children, Elizabeth credited as being the eldest and Eliza the youngest. I surmise that Anna Maria may have died at Eliza's birth because it is recorded that Eliza was born in 1829 and Jacob Jr md a Catherine Whitmire that same year. Eliza was "farmed out" and living with a Hess family (I think but am not sure that it was Phillip Hess's brother Jeremiah with whom she lived. There is some connection bet Bittenbender's and Hess's) Lavina Smethers b Jan 29 1818; d. July 27, 1887 md Phillip Hess son of JEREMIAH HESS and MARY FENSTERMACHER. Smethers, was born in Easton, Northampton Co., Pa., and went to Wapwallopen, Luzerne county, with his parents at the age of eight. He learned the trade of miller and built a mill there, which he operated for some years, finally trading it for a farm, upon which he lived retired for twenty-five years. He died in 1880 at the age of eighty-five. His wife died in 1860, and they are buried in Beach Haven cemetery, Salem township, Luzerne county. They were members of of Reformed Church. Their children were: Philip, who married Lavinia Smethers; Susan, wife of John Fenstermacher; John; Jeremiah M., who md Maria Pohe; Elizabeth, wife of Charles Hill; Mary, wife of Thomas Brady; Nathan, who md Zenith ---; Reuben, who md Lavina Knorr, who survives her husband at the age of eighty; Catherine, wife of Reuben Hill, of Lee county, Ill.; Amanda, who died young; and Aaron W., who md Esther Bittenbender. John Hess, father of Mrs. Jacob C. Smethers, was born March 10, 1819, in Salem township, Luzerne county, and attended the common schools. He owned a farm of 130 acres, thirty acres of which was in timber. He learned the shoemaking trade and followed it in the intervals of farm work. He was a member of the Reformed Church and a Democrat. He died in 1881 and is buried in the Beach Grove cemetery. Because John didn't have a will, his estate was settled by administrators appointed by Orphans Court, following a petition presented by Frederick HESS, the oldest son, 20 Nov 1820. John and Catherine had 13 children: Philip HESS b 1805 d 1826 m. Martha STAMA (Stamy) s/o John and Catherine and one of 13 children. Johan Friedrich HESS arrived at Philadelphia from Rotterdam 17 Sep 1753 on the ship Richard and Mary. He was listed as John HEYS on the ship register. There is a lot of info in this book if you should be lucky enough to be included in the lines he researched. I have his sources.There are interesting tidbits about the families before they came and after. Pictures of families and churches, stones etc.You just may be a cousin of mine.
