Wallace, 93, Topeka, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Wallace was born July 24, 1911, in Philadelphia, to William J. and Edith Tindel Wallace. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was active on the rowing crew. He married Judith E. Odell on April 12, 1940, in Landsdowne, Pa. Mr. Wallace was a production manager for Seymour Foods until retiring in 1976. Upon retiring, he dedicated himself to community service as a volunteer for the Red Cross. He served as a deacon and elder in the First Presbyterian Church. He also enjoyed a game of golf or two, playing the game at Topeka Public with one wood and one adjustable iron while lying with reckless abandon about the lie of his ball and his score. He was involved in the European campaign during World War II, and he fought in the battles of Normandy, Falaise Gap, the Battle of the Bulge, and the crossing of the Moselle River and subsequent assault on Fort Koenigsmacher. He commanded the Second Battalion of the 358th Regiment of the 90th Division. He was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star among many other medals. He often commented that his greatest achievement during the war was capturing 28 German prisoners when armed with a Thompson sub-machine gun with no bullets in it. This caused the chaplain who accompanied him on this exercise to momentarily forget his service to Lord and resort to profanity. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Wohlfarth, Long Beach, Calif., Susan Hayden, Overland Park; and his son, Bill Wallace, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife. Mr. Wallace will lie in state from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 21 at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 415 S.W. 8th Ave, Topeka, 66603.
