Debra, My paternal grandmother's maiden name, GEISE, is pronounced to rhyme with mice. The spelling used by immigrants Phillip Jacob GEISS and George Adam GEISS has been traced back to the Palatine city of Freisbach where refugees from France name GUISE had resettled. In Germany the spelling was changed from GUISE to GEIß. The baptismal records of John Caspar Stoever show that children of the immigrants born in Berks Co. were given the surname spelled GEIß. The anglicized transliteration for GEIß is GEISS. However those born into the next generation in Berks Co. and westward in Pennsylvania mostly used the spelling GEISE, and that spelling has continued to the present. In the case of all these spellings, the pronunciation has always rhymed with 'mice' rather than 'geese.' I have been researching my GEISE ancestry for a couple of decades and I inherited several generations of records kept by my grandmother's GEISE ancestors. In all the material I have, I have never seen any indication of relationship between my GEISE line and the surnames you mention, Geesey, Geiselman, Geisert, or Geisler. A RootsWeb ListServ for the GEISS>GEISE surname was initiated just seven months ago. Subscription is by sending the single word 'subscribe' in a message addressed to GEISE-L-request@Rootsweb.com . In my tree, I have an Anna Katharena Geiss (daughter of Hans Georg Geiss?) b. 1684, who married Johan Abraham Staudt in 1701. They are listed by the PAL project as emigrating aboard the ship, Loyal Judith in 1739, along with several sons and daughters, one of whom, Lisa Margaretha Staudt, who was married to Johann Nicholas Klee. Does anyone have information about these families or a relationship of A K Geiss to the Geiss' of Berks Co? I believe that Lisa Margaretha died in Bern Twp. in 1786.
Would anyone have any pictures they'd like to share of Guardsmen from the outfit in Brookville, Jefferson County? It would be nice to see some photos with names attached.
