In general, the records stayed where they were. When a new county was created, sometimes entirely from one county, but often from bits and pieces of several counties, the new one started its own records. Records sent to the state level were retained by that state. You'll have to determine which county governed the land when your ancestors lived on it, and search that county's records. If, as happened with frequency in certain parts of Pennsylvania, the old county had in turn been part of other older counties, records for the very earliest settlers may be scattered across many current counties, even if the family never moved. Susan, the only info I have is Robert Erwin/Irwin, b 22 June 1804, Westmoreland Co., PA; married Elizabeth WALLACE, b 15 June 1804, PA. Robert, with two brothers, came to Ohio between 1815 & 1820. Robert & Elizabeth married 2 Nov 1825, Adams Co., OH & purchased land in Madison Twp., Scioto Co., OH on 4 Feb 1836.
