I'm researching a JOHN OLIVER, bn. 1829, at "Dykenook" Farm, Carrshield, Allendale, Northumberland, England. His parents were RICHARD OLIVER and ELIZABETH LEE. John was shown on the 1851 British Census as follows: 1851 Census Allendale Northumberland, Lightshield Elizabeth Oliver H Widow 45 Farmer of 10 acres bn Allendale Isaac Oliver Son U 24 Lead Ore Miner bn Allendale JOHN OLIVER Son U 21 " " " bn " Elizabeth Oliver Daur U 18 bn " Hannah Oliver Daur U 16 bn " Ann Oliver Daur 13 bn " Jane Oliver Daur 12 bn " Richard Oliver Son 8 bn " Sarah Oliver Daur 6 bn " I have been unable to locate JOHN OLIVER on the 1861 British Census. There is, however, a JOHN OLIVER, 51, bn. England, a Merchant Miller, on the U.S. 1880 Census, at Erie, Erie, Pennsylvannia, who could be him. Reference Film 1255128, T9-1128, page 324C. He is shown with his wife Mary E. Oliver, 51, bn. Rhode Island, and children Minnie R. Oliver 26, Fred B. Oliver, 22, and Nellie A Oliver 14, JOHN OLIVER's younger sister, Elizabeth bn. 1832, Allendale, Northumberland, England, was my gt. g/mother. Can anyone help with information on the JOHN OLIVER, 51, described in the 1880 US Census please? Carmel Hansen Brisbane Queensland Australia
I see a John Oliver in the 1900 census who could be the same man. I could not find Fred in 1900. John Oliver, Head, born January 1829, 71 yrs., Married 14 years, he & parents born England emigrated in 1850, been in US for 50 yrs. Wife Caroline, born Pennsylvania as well as parents, married 14 years. New York, Cattaraugus County, 3rd Ward, Olean City The only way you can tell if this is your man is to get a death record which might name his parents. His first wife may have died. Since this wife was born in PA, it could be a fit. I'm not sure what luck you'd have finding his naturalization papers or immigration records. Hope it helps a little.
