I am looking for Penny ancestors in Pennsylvania, but really don't know where to begin (other than check census data and join listservs). Can you give me a lead as to where to begin? I see that there are quite a few Penny's listed in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania in the late 1700's. The Penny family who settled in Champaign Co., Illinois (my great grandparents) married into the Thompson family. Lemuel R. Thompson b 1847 in Marshall Co., Indiana married Margaret Robinson b. 1847 in Kittaning, Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania (this information is from the birth record of my great uncle). Margaret Robinson's parents were Samuel Robinson b. between 1815-1821 in Armstrong Co., PA and Anna ? b. about 1823 in Pennsylvania. Could the Penny brothers might have originated in Allegheny County? Any suggestions on how to best research this family is most appreciated!!! This is the information that I have to date. Joseph and Henry are the only Penny's that show up in the Madison Co., Ohio census data. Joseph L. Penny b 9/15/1795 Pennsylvania d. 6/22/1879 St. Joseph, Co., Illinois m. Rhoda A. Johnson b. about 1815 Ohio d. 2/9/1859 St. Joseph, Co., Illinois Joseph had a brother by the name of Henry b. 7/15/1804 who was born in Pennsylvania. Their father was born about 1774 in Pennsylvania. Their mother was born in England - don't know her name. Here is a reference that I used to trace some of this information: Source: History of Madison County, Ohio http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Madison/MadisonJeffersonB.htm "Henry Penny was born July 15, 1804, in Pennsylvania, but in 1810 his parents came to Madison County, Ohio, and settled in Monroe Township, where Henry was left parentless when only eight years old. He was then raised by one of the Johnsons, on the farm where James Peene now resides, near Jefferson. He was the eldest of a family of five children, of whom but one survives. Henry was a pioneer farmer and frontier woodsman. About 1827. he settled on his farm, about one mile due north of where the Urbana road branches off from the National road. There he cleared and farmed until his death. April 6, 1880. He was three times married-first to Cynthia Johnson: second, to Elizabeth. only daughter of Reason Francis: and lastly to Mary, a sister to his first wife, and daughter of Jacob Johnson."
