    1. Re: [PA] John Leitz birthdate/1874
    2. Hi, I don't remember who was helping me with this but I have another question. Could there be a birth record recorded around 1874 in Lackawanna Co. for John Leitz or William Leitz born 1866. Was there a F. J. Leitz. The F could have been for Frederick, born abt. 1868 but he was born in Ohio. Hopefully someone can solve this puzzle. Don't know the last name of the Mother but her first name was Mary born Oct. 1839 in Germany Father was William Leitz born Jan. 1838 in Germany and Immigrated 1857 the 1900 census said the he was in the US 43 years and married 42 years. I don't know where to go with this. If someone could direct me I would be so grateful. Sandy

Lieutenant M554_Roll 70 Served with L, 5, PA Calvary Penna Cav. Penna 5th Regiment, 65th Volunteers Rank In: Pvt/Rank Out: Pvt M554_Roll 70 I have a subscription to vintage newspapers and found a number of references to LEITZ family from Minnesota including: DULUTH DAILY NEWS July 13, 1887 F. J. LEITZ with the Northwestern Casket Company of Minneapolis is at the Merchants. (Hotel) BISMARK TRIBUNE May 11, 1887 F. J. LEITZ of Minneapolis is at the Sheridan Then there was mention of an Undertakers Convention, again, the name F. J. Leitz. It appears that some of the LEITZ sons traveled to surrounding states from Minnesota and stayed at hotels while they were on business for the Northwestern Casket Company in Minneapolis. And from the DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE July 22, 1910 An obituary entitled DULUTH PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY AT SEATTLE Unable to stand the rigors of a journey from Duluth To Seattle...Mrs. Magdolene WELLAND, 73 years old, and for 48 years a resident of Duluth who had gone to visit her daughter in Seattle died there on Tuesday due to the extreme heat. Mrs. Wieland (note spelling difference) left Duluth only a week before to visit her daughter, Mrs. William LEITZ of Seattle. She was accompanied by Mrs. J. F. SCHLEUNES, another daughter, residing at 1625 East Fourth St, Duluth where Mrs. WIELAND also made her home. Mrs. Wieland is also survived by a third daughter, Mrs. J. J. OEDER of Portland, OREGON, AND TWO SONS, Albert H. and Gustave A. Wieland, both of Duluth. Interment will take place in Duluth. And the final information that seemed rather possible based on William Leitz (born 1838 in Germany) son Frederick's birthplace shown as Ohio in the 1880 Census from Jermyn, Lackawanna Co, PA. I found this census information - >From the 1860 OHIO, Wyandot Co, Salem Twp, Upper Sandusky LEITZ, John P. 46 Born Baden (as were all the family below) LEITZ, Elisabeth 43 LEITZ, William 22 (born 1838) LEITZ, Phillip 20 LEITZ, Augustus 13 LEITZ, Catherine 11 The various census years and locations show that there were many LEITZ families, nearly all from Germany. So finding your correct family will be a difficult challenge. It seems to me that your best clues are the family occupation of casket painters, superintendent Of Northwestern Casket Company, Minneapolis and possibly getting a copy of the Civil War Invalid and Widow's Pension Application Files from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Washington, DC. (You can find them online And also order a copy of the Pension files online by using a credit card.) Hopefully you will find something in this post that will be of assistance to you in your research.
