Hi, Thanks for the tip about Rootweb. I know they were married in Chester, PA., and 6 of their children were born in Northumberland. They died in Ohio. Kathy
If you have an idea where they got married, you can find out pretty easily what church records are extant for that period. There won't be many from the early 19th century except possibly Philadelphia. Then find ways to get them checked. For most counties in Pennsylvania, there are very knowledgeable people who follow that county's rootsweb mailing list. If you have death or burial information, you may be able to track them backwards. The graveyard will give a strong hint as to the kind of church they attended. There may be an extant will which often will provide good information for tracking backwards, particularly if there are financials. A deed may also be helpful. Kathy: Official record keeping in PA, started 1906. Previously scattered records from churches for the most part. These would be by church name, not usually by year. Sure wish it was otherwise. Don Renninger Jacksonville, FL >
Hi Don, Thank you. If any one runs across the surname HARPER, please let me know...Birth, Death, Marriage... 1772-1815. Northumberland or Chester County. Thanks, Kathy Jacksonville, Oregon
Dear Kathy, Birth records beginning in 1906 are held by PA Vital Records. Many counties hold records prior to that but typically for 20 years or less. There is also a statewide Vitals index for 1852-1854. Church records are likely the best bet for the years in which you are interested. I am searching for 2 births that happened prior to 1906. To obtain them I need to know the County which I don't know. Does PA have a state-wide microfilm index of births that I can order in from the LDS? Thank you GAIL RAOGK for St Catharines, Ontario
Gail, The best source for births in PA is the church they attended prior to 1906. Do you have a city and religion? Checking the census will give you the County and Town.
