Fairfield, Iowa “Weekly Journal” Vol. Issue # Jan. 12, 1898 Page 4 Transcribed by Deborah Brownfield – Stanley AN OLD CITIZEN GONE Father McKemey Passes Away Monday Evening. WAS SIXTY YEARS IN IOWA Funeral Services at the Family Residence tomorrow. JOSEPH ALISON MCKEMEY was a native of Pennsylvania, and came to Iowa in 1839, being but 24 years of age. He settled at Farmington, Van Buren county, and removed from there to Fairfield in 1842. He was therefore one of the earliest settlers of this town and county. He was for many years engaged in the harness and saddlery business in this city, and was for six years county treasurer. He was one of the charter members of the Masonic order in this place and stood high in its councils. He was for many years one of the leading business men of Fairfield; a man of the highest integrity, of decided convictions and character, and one who stood very high in the estimation of all his neighbors. Father MCKEMEY was taken sick on Christmas eve, and after an illness of ten days he passed away on Monday night at 11 o’clock. He leaves behind him Mother MCKEMEY, now in her 81st year, with one son, HON. J. S. MCKEMEY, of this city, and three daughters, MRS. S. J. CHESTER and MRS. R. J. WILSON, also of Fairfield, and MRS. DR. SUTTON, of Oklahoma. The funeral services will be held at the family residence on west Washington street, tomorrow at 2 p.m. REV. A. F. MARSH will officiate and will be assisted by DR MAGILL. Among those from a distance who will be present at the funeral will be HON. JACOB SLAGLE, of Pittsburg, Pa., REV. BERNARD SLAGE, of Defiance, O., and MRS. J. B. NEELEY, of St. Joseph, Missouri. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iajeffer

I thought the following might be of interest to those on this list: 1900 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS: PENNSYLVANIA (Every-Name Index Linked To Images) Ancestry.com has just added an every-name index to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. This update adds an every-name index for the state of Pennsylvania, with index entries linked to images of the census schedules. Additional postings will be made regularly to this database. Joan
I am searching for for my G-G-G-uncle, JAMES BINGMAN/BINGAMAN/BINGHAM, who died in New Kensington, PA on 22 January 1917. Whether he is buried in New Kensington, I do not know, but I wondered if someone might be able to find out if he is, or, where he is buried in Westmoreland County. He was born about 1844 in Snyder County, PA and was a soldier in the Civil War, 49th Penna Volunteers. I know that after the war he just wandered around the country and had been at a Soldiers and Sailors Home in Ohio before returning to Pennsylvania. To the best of my knowledge, he was never married. Many Thanks, Sidney --- sdreese@alb.edu
If anyone can help, I am looking for ship records from France to New York on April 15,1887 for William, Peter & Mary Ann Johncour. Other possible spellings listed above. Thank you.
Thank you for the Ehrnreiter information from the 1930 Minnesota census. John
Dear Listers I am new to this list. I have found out that my great-great-uncle Owen Morse Phillips was in the 1880 US Census that he was a boarder at Shamokin, Northumberland as a Cabinetmaker. He was born at Haverfordwest, Wales in Sept Q 1859 but according to this census he was born in around 1860. There is only one 1880 US Census for him but there was no records in 1900 or 1920 - what about 1890? I wonder if you have the directories or similar for his records in later years after 1880? I wonder if you have the international passengers list? I would be grateful if you would look up for me please. I would be grateful for your advices. Thank you in advance. Angela Treanor New Zealand
This is what I've found with the international passenger list; I know the difference with the Irish, British and the Welsh, but the authorities probably didn't. Irish to America, 1846-1865, age ???, male, infant, residence; Ireland, date of arrival, Sept. 1853. ships name Hancock, boat came from Liverpool, mode of travel storage. Irish and British to America,1860-1870; one month old, male, infant; origin, England, arrived, Oct. 10 1870, ships name Holland, mode of travel, cabin passenger. I hope this of help to you, kim. Debra, Thanks again for your help. Now I don't need to complain to webtv<like they listen>:-)) Doris
Hi, Doris: You're welcome. No, I had some trouble with it, too. There was a band of headings that came up on each page, that did not belong there. It usually blocked exactly what I needed. I sent a note to the site to let them know. When I used the address you provided, I was able to see the info...luckily, the band of headings didn't block that. Hello, List, Anyone have Genealogy.com, or Heritage Quest and can peek at a fuzzy image for me? I've got Ancestry and also the cd that has the 1900 PA index, but that is of no help and the Ancestry image is blurry. I've been able to make out most of the info but not the beginning where it gives the wife's and children's names and the birthyears. The details are: Johnstown, Ward 10, Cambria, PA, Roll T623 1389, page 16B, ED 135. Evans, Richard Evans, Walter, son As I said, I can't read the wife's name. Or the rest of the children. They are the twelfth family down the page. Once I hit "Wales" for place of birth, I can read it just fine. But the info before that is so faint!! Thanks for any help in advance... Best wishes, Elysia
