Hi, Catherine, You're right, the state office doesn't keep anything prior to 1906, and then you must go to the county. And you say the Web site indicates they don't keep any birth records? That is the case often, unfortunately, and even if they did it would be rare to see they have birth records for the 1870s. I would suggest getting a phone number from the Web site and speaking to an person at the courthouse, just to make sure they don't carry any old births. After that I'm not sure where you'd go to get a birth; a family Bible may be the only luck you'd have, and finding that, well, I don't have to tell you how difficult that would be. You may have to settle for getting the information you seek through other means. For example, if you are seeking parents' names you could get death certificates instead, etc. You could also check to find them in the Census records for parents' names. Knowing which pieces of information you are looking for will help narrow the field. I hope this helps, even if it's just a little. Dear Listers, In 1876, Samuel W. Pennypacker located a genealogy in Dutch and had it translated into english. This genealogy was prepared over 200 years ago and it linked many Dutch families with their relatives who had settled in the area of Skippack, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. My 6th great grandmother, Magdalena van Sintern, had a major role in compiling this document. . The original of his work is now in the library of the Pennypacker Mills museum in Schwenksville, PA, with copies in The Meeting House, Mennonite Historians of Eastern PA, 565 Yoder Road, Box 82, Harleysville, PA 19438, (215) 256-3020.and the LDS library, in Salt Lake City, under the title of "A Genealogy of the Family of De Voss". These copies each have a companion index which I provided after I entered all of Sam's information into Personal Ancestral File (LDS genealogy program). There were 1016 numbered individuals, and another 422 in-laws, etc. that were not numbered, but now are. From the PAF program, I was able to create a Gedcom file which I then transferred to the GedHTree program which automatically translated the entire genealogy into HTML for uploading to the web. Fom the Pennypacker Mills Museum, I obtained permission to post the genealogy with the following notice: "Courtesy of Pennypacker Mills, County of Montgomery, Schwenksville, PA". Sorry I did it the wrong way before, please accept my appology.
Could "Mt Olivet" possibly have been a typo in the newspaper, and really should have been "Mt. Oliver"? Mount Oliver is a suburb of Pittsburgh, as is McKees Rocks. So, "Mt Oliver" may make more sense. Hope that helps a little. Hi SusiCP; That is about what I found... thousands of references to Mt. Olivet cemeteries, churches, lodges, etc. in PA,but very little as to an actual village or town. I have had a couple of folks from Pittsburgh area suggest that the Mt. Olivet in my obit is a typo and should be Mt. Oliver. That seems to make sense being as my Carl ended up not too far from there in Mckees Rock. Hi D. Thanks so much for the census reports. I'm guessing Aron Palmer might be who I'm looking for. Sarah and John named their first son Swithin, after her father and their second son Aaron (possibly after his father) I'll see if there is some way I can check that out. Thanks for answering. His parents may have been named Ephram and Elizabeth ,but that is not a documented fact at this time to my knowledge. I'd like to trace his lineage in PA but don't have a clue as to where to look. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, August 15, 1907 The people of Chariton were shocked to hear of the tragedy in Ottumwa, where a former well known citizen of Chariton, shot and killed his aged father-in-law and then took his own life. A report from Ottumwa says that GEORGE GODFREY, an aged resident of that place, was fatally shot by FRANK DUNGAN, who then turned the weapon on himself. He at one time was very wealthy but it is said recent business failures had reduced his holdings until they were but mere fractions of what they formerly were. For several years FRANK DUNGAN was a resident of Chariton and at one time was Mayor of Ottumwa. His wife, MRS. NELLIE DUNGAN, says the rash act was the result of temporary insanity -- that when he was in the west, several years since, he sustained a sun stroke from which he never recovered. It is known that he and GODFREY were on good terms. FRANK DUNGAN is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in Beaver County, July 30, 1848. He came to Iowa in 1856 and located in Knoxville, where his father was engaged in the milling business several years. His career was somewhat remarkable At the age of fifteen years he entered a grocery store in Chariton under O.L. Palmer and applied himself strictly to the business until he was of age, at which time he was admitted into the firm. In 1872 he moved to Ottumwa and went from here to California with the intention of making his home there. He was dissatisfied with the west, however, and returned to Ottumwa, accepting a position as traveling salesman for the old firm of Lawrence & Garner. He later purchased the interests of Mr. Garner and the firm continued in business for several years. In 1883 he was connected with the Manning, Cushing Company, boot and shoe dealers, and two years later, he was elected Mayor of Ottumwa to serve the ensuing year. It is said he filled the position with great discretion and ability. >From that time on MR. DUNGAN has been engaged in a number of enterprises, for the past several years dealing some in real estate. He was married to MISS NELLIE GODFREY in May, 1872. To this union one child was born, MRS. GEORGE MACDONALD of this city, who, with the widow now are the only immediate members of his family. Three brothers and one sister are left to mourn his untimely end. They are EDWIN of Ottumwa, WILLIAM of New York, HORACE of South Dakota, and MRS. CHANNING SMITH of Chariton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert October 18, 2004 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm posted at this site with Nancee's permission.
