    1. Deed and census question
    2. Karen
    3. I have a question about my grandfather's Deed to his house. His name was Giovanni (John) DiGiacomo. His deed shows he purchased his house at 2324 Fernon Street in Philadelphia on February 24, 1919 for $1 from a Leon Holtz, single. Now the problem is that I cannot find him there in the 1920 Census or anywhere positively for that matter. If he purchased the house in 1919, why wasn't he living there in 1920? Could it be he rented it out until he was married? He married my grandmother Iolanda Forti on November 7, 1921. Iolanda (Violet Forte) was living with her mother Rose Forti in the 1920 census at 1820 Moore Street - no sign of my grandfather there. By the 1930 they were both at the 2324 Fernon address with their family. I also couldn't seem to find the 2324 Fernon address in the 1920 either. Back then is that what they would do, rent out their houses until married? Any help in clearing this up would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Karen

    3. Dear Folks, The following is a bit of a mystery to me and would like any help out there. In September 1890 Mildred May Whitmore was born in Maine to parents living in Boston. Less than one year later her father became critically ill and died. Parents were Peter Augustus Whitmore born Nova Scotia and Georgia McBean/MacBean born Maine. Georgia took her daughter and herself to live with her mother and younger siblings in Massachusetts. in 1900 they were all living in Massachusetts. Georgia's siblings Frank and Adelaide were there. Sister Carrie had married Albert Snowman, both born in Maine. The Snowman's had two daughters, Edna and Ida. Both these children/women married. Adelaide eventually married Leander Greene and moved to New Jersey and took her mother Catherine MacBean with her. By 1910 Mildred is living in PA with the Snowman's. She is 18. By 1920 the Snowmans are living in PA alone. Leander and Adelaide Greene are in PA too. Mildred is nowhere and I suspec she is married by now. By happenstance I found out that the Snowmans and their married daughters ended up coming back to Maine most if not all summers. The summered on Squirrel Island, a very old money, exclusive and expensive area then AND today. A sort of "Martha Stewart place" to summer. Albert is known as Commodor Snowman and the local society page of the news often mentions them. In the 1940's ALbert dies on Squirrel Island and is transported to someplace in PA to be buried. He is survived by one daughter. Carrie appears to be dead at this poin as was a daughter [she is not mentioned.] My purpose for ALL this is to find Mildred, who is a relative. Though she is related to the Snowman's through her maternal aunt, I am not but they are my chance to fine Mildred. There is longevity in this family so If Mildred had children they could be living. I am trying to find the burial place of Albert and Carrie Snowman or Catherine MacBean or Leander and Adelaide Greene. Death dates may lead to obits and info. OR, Mildred may be burried with one of them. Frank MacBean appears to disappear. The Snowman's girls were born in 1880's and married between 1900-1910. There are several personal reasons for wanting to find Mildred as well, as finding a lost relative. I welcome any and all ideas and would consider hiring a researcher at this point. I have attempted to put out queries for PA with RAOGK without response. I have spent the past 16 years looking and have managed to collect this info so far. SHe's out there someplace. Thanks to all for any leads or assistance! david

    3. Hi, Doris: You're quite welcome. There is another James Halfpenny in the 1870 census: Series: M593  Roll: 963  Page: 300 1870 - Bay Ridge P.O., New Utrecht, Kings Co., NY - 7/27/1870 Halfpenny, James - 46 - m - w - laborer - NY He was shown as living alone. Please remember that I'm using Heritage Quest which indexes by head-of-household and by different-surname-within-household. He might not fall into one of those categories. Maybe someone with other census access can find the James you're looking for. What was the relationship between Felisitus & James? 3. Hallo again from New Zealand. I am still trying to find the birth records of my Great great Aunts born 1871 and 1873 in Pennsylvania. I now think their parents were living in Whitehall, Lehigh County in 1870. But I am a bit confused as to where to write. On the internet I looked up Lehigh County Courthouse which says if does not have copies of Births etc and these must be ordered through State Office. However the State Office says that for births prior to 1906 you must contact the Registrar of Wills, Orphans Court in the county in which the event occurred. I feel like I'm going round in circles. Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction Many thanks Catherine Auckland, New Zealand

When I look up the surname Halfpenny in the 1860 PA census, I found no James indexed (Heritage Quest is indexed by head of household and different surname within a household). But there are 2 Halfpenny listings for Delaware Co.: Series: M653  Roll: 1105  Page: 721 & 722 1860 - Kellyville P.O., Upper Darby Twp., Delaware Co., PA - 6/23/1860 Halfpenny, Henry - 50 - m - day laborer - Ireland - convict/assault & battery ---------- Mary - 50 - f - Ireland ---------- Patrick - 17 - m - spinner - Ireland ---------- James - 15 - m - spinner - Ireland ---------- John - 13 - m - Ireland ---------- Mary - 11 - f - Ireland ---------- Michael - 7 - m - England The other listing is for a 19 yo Thomas Halfpenny from Ireland living with another family in Upper Darby Twp. In the 1870 PA census material, there is a 72 yo. James Halfpenny in Union Co. There is a Henry Hapenny (60) in Upland Boro., Chester Twp., Delaware Co. (living alone).
