Lockridge Herald Lockridge, Jefferson Co, IA Friday, February 11, 1916 OBITUARY Archibald Gilchrist, one of the most highly respected residents of Fairfield died Saturday morning at four o'clock at his home on East Adams street after being suddenly stricken with heart failure. Mr. Gilchrist had been in very poor health for the past year. Mr. Gilchrist was born in Westmoreland county, Penn., Jan. 1st, 1837, and was the son of Joseph and Eliza Gilchrist. In 1869, the family moved to Greenwood, Jackson county, Mo., and five years later moved to Fairfield where Mr. Gilchrist has since resided. In 1861 at West Newton, Penn., he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Clendenin who is left to mourn his loss. He is also survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. T.F. McNew of this city, and one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Sarah Bailey of this city, David Gilchrist of near Libertyville and John Gilchrist of Cochran Mills, Penn. Mr. Gilchrist has long been a member of the United Presbyterian church and is one of the Elders of the church. He followed the occupation of carpenter and cabinet maker and for many years was one of the principal contractors of the city. Hi TC, I believe the two categories were to help the Government survey the number of men available for military service. Rebecca >Subject: Re: [PA] census question >To: [email protected] I see it says that the 16 to 18's are repeated in the 16 to 25 >category. That helps me to count up my families, but it doesn't explain why they did it that way. I'm still curious about that. > >TC >
Hi... I am looking for two obituaries..... one for Cora C. Reed who died September 6, 1960 in Northampton Co, PA.....I found this date in the Easton Public Library Obituary Index.... Also looking for Estella Simons who died Jan 4, 1954 in Northampton Co, PA....also found her in the EPL Obit Index..... Appreciate any help on this research....I am helping my husband with his family researching.....one of these women, was my husband's great grandmothers....(we believe it is Cora C. Reed.....because in her husband's obit it lists Cora Simon.....) Thank you... Stephanie Grohol
Hi... I am looking for information on Arthur M. Simon(s)....he was the son of Stewart and Cora C. Reed Simons...and he was born Oct 19, 1890 in Northampton Co, PA.....I was able to locate him in the census until 1930 where I can't find him...I did find him in the WWI Draft Registration Index..... I think I might have found him in the Easton Public Library Obitaury Index that they have on their site....it has a Arthur Simons who died Jan 5, 1926....this might be him....but I have his father's obituary that states that he may be alive under a different name of Simon....but not sure.....his father's obit lists that he had seven sons and 5 daughters..... If someone can help me in trying to figure out if this is the same Arthur I am looking for...would appreciate any help....thank you.... I am helping my husband with his family researching.... Susan Your question gives me the opportunity to remind list posters that when they are subscribed in digest mode to the list and receiving their digests in plain text format, that they need to change the subject when replying to a message in the digest to coincide with the message subject line. Receiving digests "inline" is new for some of you and replying to them works differently. Also--if you would prefer to go back to receiving your digest copy in MIME format let me know at: [email protected] and I can change the format back for you. Now to answer Susan's question...the Digest is merely a different way of receiving the same list messages you are receiving in your list mail. Instead of receiving individual emails for each list post, digest subscribers receive the messages in a digest--with several messages all lumped together in the digest. Same messages--just a different method of receiving the list mail. Joan, co-admin

TC- The Source merely states that they wanted to get a better fix on the number of young men between those ages. Perhaps for potential military reasons -- I can't say. But it didn't go beyond just wanting to narrow down the ages or the young men and the number of them. And, yes, it is noted in the book that census takers might not have recorded this info correctly. In fact, the book states that census takers were not issued official instructions on how to complete the entries included in the census until 1830. Joan

<<It is merely a listing that helps to narrow down the numbers of young men between the ages of 16-18. My source is "The Source, A Guidebook to American Genealogy.">> Yes, but why would they want to do that? And assuming there was some purpose, why did they count the 16-18's again among the 16 -26's?? By the way, I've noticed that census takers often did not follow the instruction: "Those, for instance, between 16 and 18, will all be repeated in the column of those between 16 and 26." Sometimes when I've seen a single 16-18 next to a single 16-26, they are the same person, and sometimes they are different. TC

TC They did it this way to get a better fix on the number of young males between the ages of 16 and 18--and, yes, they were supposed to be listed in both categories--16-18 and also repeated in 16-25. The way it was explained at ancestry.com may shed a bit of light on it. "The categories allowed Congress to determine persons residing in the United States for collection of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of Representatives" I am wondering if the age question was so they could specifically see how many were of a legal age for taxation, etc. Kassie

Excuse me faor asking a non-PA question here, but: Does anybody know why the 1820 census has both a categeory for males 16 to 18, plus 16 to 25? And how did they decide which 16-year-olds went in which category? TC
