    1. [PA] 12 loyal/honest men 1827 Pa
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. If anyone could help here with any of these 12 men appreciate all contributions, This incident involved the intestate death of Jacob Smithers/Smethers in 1827 and William one of his sons asked for an inventory to be done thus in doing so we got the names of Jacob's children. I am familiar with some and prehaps find a relation others I have no clue. thanks kindly, Nena Smothers NE WA ======================================================== maybe if we ID's these men it might help, esp who the heck is Samuel Smithers, I have something somewhere if its same guy mentioned he was frrom NY August 3, 1827, in Orphan's Court Docket #1, #6, pg. 142, there was an inquistion indented and taken in the dwelling house of Thomas Smithers of Nescopeck Twp., Luz., Co., Pa., by Naptale Hubbard, Esq. High Sherriff of Luz. Co., Pa. along with a juror consisting of: Oaths and inquisitions of 12 honest and lawful men. http://www.rootsweb.com/~paluzern/famwills/smethers.htm Samuel Smithers; John Cool; Jacob Bittenbender; Conrad Blofs; Abraham Keen, Peter Good; James Dodson; Peter Bittenbender; John Blofs; George Rough; William Hick and William Freas, twelve honest & lawful men of my Bailwick. They took a valuation of the land and split into 5 parts and it gives a long drawn out detail of this. Then they state as follows; #1 parcel to Thomas Smithers, this in 2 pieces; #2 to William Smithers; #3 to John Shoud husband to Racheal Smithers; #4 to Lawrence Smithers; and #5 to George Sharey husband of Elizabeth, dau. of Jacob Smithers, dec'd. The property as a whole was valued at $579.12, in which 1/3 the widow of Jacob Senr. the deceased is to draw from the several heirs above mentioned according to the valuation of the jurors, each and every year during her natural life, and likewise the other 3 heirs, that is not present are to draw their equal part agreeavle to the appraisement, after the debts and c______? are paid...... 1Samuel Smithers maybe hes related to this Ernst in the inven of Wm 1760 I had completely forgotten about reading it years ago, the inventory of William Smither 1760 reads:....The Accompt of Ernst Smetter Executor of the Last Will & Testament of William Smetter, Desced......the cover document for this inventory, which must be the date the estate was finally settled reads.... Accompt of 2Ehrhard Smither for Estate of William Smither deceased March 3, 1761.. ...notice William's named is spelled Smetter, which probably is superfulous ----but what is very interesting is the Ernst/Ehrhard name --- who do you suppose he is????. 3John Cool 4Jacob Bittenbender Conrad Bloss b 1796, In the Mount Zion Cemetery Records in Nescopeck Twp a Conrad Bloss is listed buried there date of death listed June 28, 1847 (right before the 1850 census where we find Henry married to an Elizabeth). 3. HI... I am trying to find a death date for Cora Reed Simons....and possibly and obituary for Cora Reed Simons...she was my great grandmother..... She was born Oct 1872 in PA to William H. Reed and Sarah C. Brader....she married Stewart (Steward) Simon(s)....spelled both ways..... I have several obituaries...one for her husband and several for her children.....she is alive in her husband, Stewart's obit when he died in Feb of 1937.....in Freemansburg....when her son, Mervin died in Jan 1948 in Northampton Co, PA...she was still alive and living in Freemansburg, PA..... In another obituary for her son, Jacob A. Simons, he died in May 1964, she wasn't alive....so Cora had to have died between 1948 and 1964.... I did go to the Easton Public Library to see if I could find anything on her but I did not find anything in their obit indexes....so I am assuming that she wasn't listed in the Easton Public Library obits info...but she could be elsewhere....I did find an obit for an obit for a Cora Reed...but it wasn't her..... My mother vagely remembers her when she was abt 7 or so...and thinking she had to have died sometime in the 1950's....we were thinking 1957/1958...but not too sure..... These are her children that would be listed in her obit as survivors: Horace Simons John Simons Alice Thornton Mary Margaret Libenguth Archibald or Archie Simons Catherine Fry Jacob Simons Gilbert Simons Dorothy E. Smith (my grandmother) Would appreciate any help in locating a death date and an obituary....plus possibly where she was buried.....thank you or any help that anyone can provide..... Joseph B. 3. Hello Beth, The reference book I mentioned I got through Amazon and it was an expensive one. But it is the Bible of these types of homes. Reg Niles published it in 1981. I have searched a long time for it and came acrossed it one day and bought it right away. It was very hard to come by. I am writing a book on The Children's Home I came from and then became interested in helping others find their records. This book includes the US and Canada. Where in Virigina was the orphanage? Their were Catholic run Orphanages called The Good Shepard Homes. 3. Sandra, I had a thought. If you are interested in finding out who the parents of Samuel Evert/Ebert were, PA state BDM has records for anyone who died past 1906, and these documents give the names of the father and mother of the deceased. Would you have any idea when Samuel died? It gets a little expensive to have them do a search, and we have that little problem with the Ebert/Evert/Everitt name changes, so we would have to know his death date for a simple search, which costs $9.00. I remember you saying that you found Samuel living with his son in Catasaqua? I think that is where you said he was. I will also keep my eye out for burial records, if it was Catasaqua let me know, I may get down to Lehigh County Historical Society next week. 2. Janet, about the book you mentioned, "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes: an Historical Directory" written by Reg Niles, what area does it cover? Is it only Penna, Western Pa or nationwide? And, may I ask, where did you get it? I have an orphanage to track down in Virginia. I know my mother and her brother were there in 1925 - 26 but the people who ran it (an order of nuns) have no record of girls. My great grand-mother was also in one in Baltimore in 1906. Again, the nuns say they have no record of girls ever being cared for there. Well, the 5 women involved couldn't agree on the time of day and yet they all agreed on the name and the place so I want to try other avenues. If you could post the publisher and where you got it, I'll see if I can find a copy to buy. Thank you so much for posting.
