    1. [PA] Pennsylvania ancestors that came from New York State might be located in FREE newspaper database.
    2. Dick Hillenbrand
    3. If your Pennsylvania ancestors ever lived in New York State, you might be able to locate some information in this excellent free on-line newspaper database. Many of these early settlers migrated on to Pennsylvania. The free newspaper database website at www.fultonhistory.com is growing leaps and bounds! There are over six million scanned, digitized and searchable newspaper pages from all over New York State, ranging in years from about 1820 to modern times. This excellent free newspaper website recently received accolades in an article in the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper. The link to the news story is on the Upstate New York Genealogy Blog at http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/ As a side note, the fultonhistory site is now extremely busy and please have patience, or try it at off hours for a while. 1. [PA] FOX / WRIGHT of PENNSYLVANIA
    2. Hi Geni Friends of FOX & PA. I am forwarding this to you for I know there are many WRIGHT'S in PA. And this maybe of interest to those genealogists in the search of their ancestry of "THE WRIGHT'S." My Grandmother was NELLE CYNTHIA HOUSTON married to JOHN WILLIAM FOX d/o MARY CAROLINE WRIGHT married to DAVID ISAAC HOUSTON, she is d/o GEORGE WASHINGTON WRIGHT married to SARAH JANE ROUPE. GEORGE WASHINGTON WRIGHT is the s/o SOLOMON WRIGHT & NANCY GRAY. CARPE DIEM, Lori ; ) in Arizona formally from Washington, PA. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rngrant Surnames: WRIGHT Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wright/15379/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This message is being sent to the Wright List, the Lancaster County, Virginia, List, and the Halifax and Granville Counties, North Carolina, Lists as a request for assistance in finding a male Wright descendant of 1783 (year of death) Wingfield Wright of Granville County, North Carolina (place of death). First, let me give an explanation of the genealogical puzzle we are attempting to sort out. In previous postings I have noted that 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County, Virginia, married Mary (Hill) (Wright) (Lawrence) Meredith probably before January 11, 1670/71, probably in Lancaster County, Virginia, and they had the following children: 1) Francis Wright, Jr., who married Anne _____, 2) Charles Wright, 3) Mary (Wright) Briggs, and 4) John Wright. Francis Wright, Jr., was a tithable in 1697 and came of age by 1699, indicating a date of birth between about 1671, the probable date of marriage, and 1676, 21 years before 1697. He married by 1707 and sold his remaining land in Lancaster County in 1718 and apparently moved away from Lancaster County. This Francis Wright, Jr., may have been the father of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, who was born probably before 1711, married Mary Hawkins, apparently resided in King William County at some point in time, resided in Hanover County in a part which became Louisa County in 1742 and resided in Louisa County until about 1750, then moved to Albemarle County in a part which became Amherst County and died in Amherst County in 1767. It has not been possible to document this relationship because of the burned record status of King William and Hanover Counties. Charles Wright remained in Lancaster County until 1718 and has not been traced further. Mary (Wright) Briggs and her husband Ralph Briggs remained in Lancaster County until 1718 and then moved to Henrico County where both died before 1722. John Wright, the third son of 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County, has been identified as 1730 John Wright of Goochland County, Virginia. He was still under age in 1699 and came of age by 1705, indicating a date of birth between about 1678 and 1685. He remained in Lancaster County until the end of 1718 and then moved by 1722 to Henrico County in a part that became Goochland County and died in Goochland County in 1730. The Y-DNA of descendants of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County matches that of descendants of John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter), a different John Wright from 1730 John Wright of Goochland County. John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter) was born probably before 1719, married probably before 1736, and resided in Goochland County until 1772, and thereafter has not been traced. The Y-DNA match of John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter) to 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County may have been because John the Carpenter was a son of Francis Wright, Jr., and Anne (_____) Wright and grandson of 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County. However, John the Carpenter may also have been from a different line of Wrights discussed below. The inventory of the estate of 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County was appraised by John Wright, who was probably 1698 John Wright of Lancaster County. This John Wright resided in Lancaster County from 1675 until 1698 and was known as the bricklayer. There was also in Lancaster County a John Wright known as the plasterer and sometimes known, perhaps mistakenly, as the planter. He was a tithable by 1697 and resided in Lancaster County until at least 1705. John Wright (Lancaster County Plasterer) was probably the son of 1698 John Wright of Lancaster County. This is based on (1) the timing of their appearances in the tithe lists, which indicate that John the Plasterer was younger than 1698 John by enough years to be his son, (2) on the similarity of occupations of bricklayer and plasterer, which I believe then meant builder or contractor, and (3) the absence of any other known Wright in Lancaster County at that time who could have been John the Plasterer's father. John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter) may have been a son of John Wright (Lancaster County Plasterer). The similarity of professions in successive generations of John the Bricklayer, John the Plasterer, and John the Carpenter is very suggestive of a family connection. And the probable age of John the Plasterer from the tithes list and the probable birth of John the Carpenter before 1719 are appropriate for a father son relationship. However, no documentation has as yet been found to confirm this. If 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County and 1698 John Wright of Lancaster County (the Bricklayer) were brothers and if 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County descended from 1690 Francis and if John the Carpenter descended from John the Bricklayer, then that also would explain the match of Y-DNA between these two lines. In his book From Wingfield to Wood, 300 Years in America Ron Oliverio quoted the following court order dated on March 11, 1724, at Lancaster County, Virginia, Court Order Book 7/143: "It appearing in this court that the estate of Wingfield Wright, orphan of John Wright (aged 14 years of age the 10th day of February last) is of so small a value that no one will maintain him for the profits thereof. The said Winfield Wright is bound by the court to John Wilkason of this county to age 21 years, the said John Wilkason to teach Wingfield Wright to read, write and the trade of shoemaker and provide him with sufficient and cleanly diet, and at the expiration of servitude to pay and allow him as is appointed for servants by indenture or custom." This record indicates that Wingfield Wright was a son of John Wright and born on February 10, 1710, probably in Lancaster County. The court order for apprenticeship from the Lancaster County court indicates that the father John Wright had probably died in that county. The only John Wright who was in Lancaster County in 1710 and may still have been in Lancaster County in or somewhat before 1724 was John Wright (Lancaster County Plasterer). The other two John Wrights were gone. 1698 John Wright of Lancaster County, the possible father of John the Plasterer, had died in 1698 and 1730 John Wright of Goochland County, the son of 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County, had moved from Lancaster County to Henrico County. However, the Lancaster County court order books for the years 1707 through 1728 have not as yet been published, so there might be another John Wright to be found in those records. Ron Oliverio traced this Wingfield Wright through the Northumberland County court records until 1758 and then traced him further to Halifax County, North Carolina, and then to Granville County, North Carolina, where he died in 1783 leaving five sons and six daughters: 1) Wingfield Wright, Jr., 2) Thomas Wright, 3) John Wright, 4) William Wright, 5) Benjamin Wright, 6) Eleanor (Wright) Pope, 7) _____ (Wright) Moy, wife of Thomas Moy, 8) _____ (Wright) Morgan, wife of Benjamin Morgan, 9) Mary Pridham (Wright) Clements, 10) Susannah Wright, and 11) Rebecca (Wright) Mann. If we could find a male Wright descendant of any of these five sons and if their Y-DNA matched that of the descendants of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County and John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter), then we would have excellent evidence that 1690 Francis Wright of Lancaster County and 1698 John Wright of Lancaster County were brothers and a reasonably sure identification of Francis Wright, Jr., and his wife Anne as the parents of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County. So the request is that if anyone knows or has information on a male Wright descendant of any of the sons of 1783 Wingfield Wright of Granville County, North Carolina, would they please either contact us or post the information to the list. Your help on this will be much appreciated. Robert N. 3. I am new to researching in Pennsylvania. I have an Edwin R. Miller, who according to census data was born in 1808 in Ohio. The same census says his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Can anyone claim this Edwin R. Miller. Sometime in his life, he made his way to Illinois and married Gertrude Weaver. Does anyone have a daughter that married a Miller and then branch off and go to Ohio and then to Illinois? Paul LaFleur

    2. I searched under Hollars/Hollers/Holas in 1810 and 1820 in PA from Heritage Quest with no luck. I found an Albert Hollars in familysearch.org having been born in TN and I believe it shows his death place as KY. His birth state listed is different every year. Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia...I honestly think he was hiding or something. He also went by the name Burton in a few census'. I am wondering if the Hollars name is/was big in Pennsylvania. Hope that someone can help! My husband's ancestor. Albert Hollars b) abt 1822. It has been passed down thru the family by the bible that Albert Hollars was born in Pennsylvania and ran away from home at the age of 12. I have his decendant info, now I am looking for his parents and siblings. Is it possible that there might be something out there with the connection. I am not real good at searching and hope someone can help! 3. You could try doing an advanced search in HQ where you only put the first name and then the age range, census, etc. That way if the last name is under a weird spelling, like only one S you can pick it out. Nancy
