I've heard of Lee Pennington. I spent a couple of years (93-95) as a postdoc at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and remember an article in one of the local papers about Lee Pennington. At the time, he was the officially designated "poet laureate" of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I seem to remember someone saying that he (LP) had an interest in his family history. It might be interesting to contact him and see what line he connects back to. How many of you can name your state's official poet laureate???? I'm not much of a poet, although my feet are "longfellows".
