Hi, I've gone through the > John Pennington of Sussex County Va. 1691-1766 email, and will add the following: > 3. Martha (Pennington), ca 1763 or 68-1860, married > John Harper (This was in 1785) Has anyone actually seen the marriage information from the county on this couple? According to the marriage record book, John needed consent from his father, John Harper, Sr. But in the book, there is no mention of Martha needing consent. According to two census reports, she was born in 1768. If she had been born in 1768, she would also have needed a consent to get married. However, if she was born in 1763, she would not. Does anyone know where the "1763" came from? I'm still undecided about what to put for the date of birth. > (8.?) Jennie (Pennington) married Selah Smithson? Listed as a possible child of John George Pennington? His will named daughter, Jincy Connell. I think this is Jane, who married James Connell. When Mary, wife of John George, died, she also left a will. She named: Nancy Connell, Martha Connell, (Jiney?) Connell; g-dau, Polly L. Oslin; son, David Pennington. Jane Connell and Martha Harper were also named. Looked through my marriage records, and the closest thing I could find for a Selah Smithson might be: Pennington, William and Drusilla Smithson 25 Nov. 1780. (Lunenburg book spells it Drusela). I don't personally have any information to support a daughter of John George Pennington named Jennie, marrying a Smithson. In the will of John George Pennington, he names a daughter, Martha. Mecklenburg Co. Will Book 3, page 409. He also names wife Mary; other children: Ann (m. Oslin), David, Sukey Nash, John, Jincy Connell, William. Mecklenburg Deed Book 13, p. 465. Mary Pennington, for love and affection of her daughter, Martha Harper, and for granddaughter, Frances W. Harper; also for g-dau. Nancy Connell. Mecklenburg Will Book 10, p. 143. Will of Mary Pennington. This is where she mentions Nancy Connell, Martha Connell, and Jiney Connell; also g-dau. Polly L. Oslin; deceased son David. Money arising from estate to be divided equally between Jane Connell and Martha Harper. Even though John George only gave us the name Martha, we do see the name Jincy Connell. When his wife "Mary" deeded property, it was to daughter, Martha (where we've added Harper); we pick up the next generation with Nancy Connell, and another granddaughter, Frances W. Harper. We know from the will of John Harper (husband of Martha Pennington) that there was a daughter, Frances, who married Benjamin Gee. The marriage records give name Frances W. Harper, as did Mary Pennington's deed. Without "assuming" Martha is the one that married John Harper, other records are searched and evidence documented for absolute proof. > 6. John, 1764- , Married twice: > (a) Sally Graves of Sussex > (b) Temperance Parker of Sussex I'm sorry to say that I have not fully documented siblings and their lines. Can someone share with me documentation for the above marriages? >From the way the will read (John George Pennington), I thought there might have been something wrong with the son, John. "for my said son David to support my son John with reasonable maintenance during my said son's life as to his (own?) person." (The microfilm was extremely faded in parts of the will). That one sentence was the only place I ever saw John mentioned. In Mary's will she did mention that David had died. John's name not mentioned as an heir here. > Martha (Pennington) to John Harper > in 1810 Mecklenburg. This was in regards to their marriage. Martha Pennington m. John Harper in Mecklenburg Co. 7 Dec. 1785 (m.b.), not 1810. > Can you give me more info and documentation concerning John Harper and > Mary M. Pennington? Did you mean John Harper and "Martha" Pennington, his wife? The only "Mary M." I have is Mary M. Harper, daughter of John and Martha (Pennington) Harper. Yes, you are welcome to share any information I might pass along. Wish I could give you more. Sue
