Frances We just may have a connection but I don't know how just yet! My ggg grandmother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Pennington Ramsey Poole b abt 1791 in GA and dies in Tuscaloosa Co. Al before 1819. Her father was Abel Pennington b abt 1755 in Wilkes Co., NC and died 26 Dec 1818 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. Some sources say his wife was Sarah Sweetin and others say Sarah Burns. There are a lot of Burns buried in the cemetary where he is but I think his wife died before he ever left GA. He had a son named Abel, jr. b abt 1788 but think would have been long before your Abel Lane. I have no information on his descendants. One thing that makes me think there may be a connection is that one of Betsy's children was named Rebecca Lane! Let me know if you would like any of the other info I have on the Penningtons.
