    1. [Pennington-L] Tax age exemption

    3. Does anyone know the exact age a person was to be exempt from paying taxes in 1780's and in early 1800's in the state of NC? Was it a state standard or did it change from county to county? For the Levi I from Group VI, we have been using the age of Martha to set an age for Levi since we do not know his age. From looking thru the web, I see this is confusing people in their attempts to find a place for Levi I. I had been using the 65 year age limit for being exempt from taxes, but have since seen others refer to a 60 year age limit. If I am reading it correctly and Levi I of Group VI was not to be taxed in 1785, he would then fall under the 1720 to 1725 age bracket. I have not gone deeper into this area as I was never sure exactly what was meant by the notation of Zebedee Woods on the 1785 Randolph Co., NC tax for Isaac Pennington - 1st Note by Zebedee Woods: "Isaac Pennington did not appear to give taxables list. Believe he has moved away. Used last years (1784) tax list to go by." 2nd Note: "Not to tax a poll for Levi. Isaac Pennington gives in twice but tax him enough & C." If the information given by Zebedee Woods was indicating that Levi I was exempt from paying taxes in 1785, then the 60 or 65 age limit becomes very important here. Using the 65 age limit not only sets a good date for Levi but also for his son, Isaac, later in the 1800's. If anyone has information in this area, would appreciate your help. Thanks Jo
