Group VI Groupies: Here is an update on the attempts to find the Levi Pennington Jr. (1758-1808) cemetery. It is supposed to be located on Levi's original farm property in Cherokee County, SC (originally Spartanburg Co.). My brother, Riley Pennington, and I visited the area where an "unknown" cemetery is supposed to exist on Peoples Creek. This cemetery is located somewhere on Levi's original farm property. We contacted the Chandler family, one of the more recent owners of this property (my dad built the home for this Chandler family). Mark Chandler had indicated earlier to my brother on the phone there was in-fact an old cemetery on the property and he knew exactly where it was located. He stated the property is now owned by and is the campus of the Cherokee Vocational Technology Center (3206 Cherokee Ave. US-29 N). The day we attempted to locate the cemetery, Mark Chandler, was sick and was unable to receive visitors. We did, however, search the accessible areas of the school campus and was unable to find the cemetery. There are several sections of dense forest and underbrush (several acres each) on the site. It is likely the old cemetery is located in one of these sections. We also visited the City of Gaffney Board of Public Works Peoples Creek Waste Treatment Plant site, which is adjoining the school campus. The operators at the plant told us that no cemetery was on the City property but they "understood" there was one on the school campus. Next trip we will attempt to talk with Mr. Chandler to determine exactly where the cemetery is located.
