Dear Steve and List, Group 10's Thomas Pennington of Surry County, VA. had a grandson, William Pennington, 1715-1784, of Brunswick County VA. William was the father of 4 children: 1. Isaac P. ca 1740-1795, called "Sack" who married Anna Pepper 2. Lucy (P.), 1742- , who married John Bugg, s/o Benjamin Bugg 3. Betsy (P.), ca 1744- , who married Howell Collier 4. Holmes P., ca 1746- , who was the executor of his father's will in 1752 Brunswick, VA. John Marshall, Jesse Oslin, Joseph Williams, and other witnessed the will. William P. is listed in the 1782 Census of Mecklenburg, County, VA. John P., ca 1718-1766, of Sussex County, VA. was called "the carpenter". He was another grandson of Thomas P., and a cousin of William P. Edmon P., 1715- , of Surry, VA. was still another of Thomas' grandson, and a brother of John the Carpenter. Edmon P., Hannah (P) Wrenn, and Sarah Bird were godparents for Hannah Hancock in Albemarle Parish in 1740. Edmon P> married Sarah (Bird?) ca 1740, and they had a son, William, born 1741, whose line probably included William Bird Pile of Group 8. The Group 10 Penningtons were associated with and related to the Stewart family, descendants of Hannah (Boone) Stewart Pennington. Tabitha (P.) married Elsey (or Eli?) Bugg, 1781-1869, of Wise County, VA. Jeb Stuart's family in Wise County changed the way the family spelled its surname, but it is the same family. James P., Jr. 1752-ca 1833 of Henry County, KY. was a great grandson of Thomas P. During the Revolutionary War, he served in four military units: 1. 1776- in Capt. John Ballard's Co. of Col. Ruffin's Va. regiment. 3. 1781 in Capt. Marshall's Co. of Col. Deadmen's Va. regiment. 4. 1781 in Capt. John Bugg's Co. James,Jr. married Rachael Vick of Southampton County, VA. The Albemarle Parish Register of Surry and Sussex Counties, VA. records the marriage of David and Lydia Pennington and the births of their 8 children: 1. Leah in 1755 with Godparents Charles Wood, Phoebe Lofting, Elizabeth Pennington 2. Tabitha, in 1758 3. Sarah Gilliam (P.) in 1760 4. All of the Godparents came from families who once lived in the Rich Neck in Surry County, VA. PP1---2, pg. 38 in 1969 tells about: 1. NEDDY P., 1769-1860, of Ashe County, N.C. and Lee County VA. He married Martha Flanary, 1779-1852, d/o or br/o John Flanary and Phoebe (Bugg). PP supposes NEDDY P. is from Group 7 but advises they cannot prove it. Bee Holmes refers to a death certificate and a Bible record but no birth or parent documentation. PP1-2, pg. 5 notes census records: 1. Neddy's birth in APR in 1763, Kinchen 1765, Nelson 1767, David ca 1735. 2. Neddy and Kinchen in Salisbury District of Rowan N.C. in 1775 (New Member info 1995). 3. 1790 Wilkes County N.C. John Flanary, 1790 Montgomery County N.C. - David, Kinchen, Neddy and Nelson. 4. 1800 Montgomery County N.C. - David, Kinchen, Neddy 5. 1810, David Jr. Montgomery, N.C. 6. 1820 Lee County, VA., David, Edward, Joshua, Micajah 7. 1830 Montgomery, N.C. - David, Kinchen, Ned, Nelson, Will 8. 1840 Montgomery, N.C. - David, Kinchen, Nelson, William 9. 1850 Lee County, VA. - Edward, David, Green, William Parsons, 1850 Montgomery County N.C. David Nelson, Claiborne. Why couldn't Neddy Pennington more easily have come from Group 10 as 7? Your comments please. Al Matthews/mmm
