    1. Re: [Pennington-L] Obtaining information from PRA database

    3. Let me expand a little on the message by Barb, it seems to me that some people have been putting out information and it is being accepted as fact, with no solid proof, that it is valid. Case in point, my Great grandfather, Wilson Pennington has been entered as the son of Simeon Pennington,=====to date I have not found that first shred of evidence, in any form, to validate that Wilson Pennington is ,indeed, the saon of Simeon Pennington. Yet it can be found in several entries that this is the case. It appears that it is fruitless to try and get it corrected, once something has gotten as far as it has, it is a great task to reverse it. I have written to several people asking for their sources of information, and what did I get? IGNORED, that's what, not one took the time to answer ,let alone offer some proof. I have found these mistakes entered into websites far removed from the PRA, by one person that I shared the information with in the first place, but it did not claim Wilson as the son of Simeon when I released it. I am irked, hurt and aggravated, with the whole mess. And greatly POed. 3. Hi, I would like to post an Obit. It is for my Great-Great Grandmother. Her maiden name was Pennington . Her name was Martha Ellen Pennington. She was born in either Indiana or Kentucky. She was the daughter of George (Charles) Pennington and Carrie (Caroline?) Angeline Brown I've seen both listed. She married Joseph C. Robertson in Henderson, Ky in 1882. She and Joseph had 11 children and moved sometime in the early 1920's to Louisville, Ky where she resided until her death in 1937. Her obit appeared in the Louisville Courier-Journal on June 21, 1937. And is listed in full below: Robertson- Sunday, June 20, 1937 at 2pm. Mrs. Martha E. Robertson, (nee Pennington) age 72 years. Mother of John, Grover, Joseph C. and Benjamin Robertson. Daughters, Mrs. Pearl Kaltofen, Mrs. Carrie Ramey, Mrs. Mary Rudinski, Mrs. Dollie Jett, Mrs. Elizabeth Hager, Mrs. Mamie Stoll, and Mrs. Anna Christison. Funeral from the residence of her daughter, Mrs Mamie Stoll, 913 E. Walnut St. Tuesday at 3 pm, Interment in Eastern Cemetery. Louisville, Ky. 3. I guess I am having a problem with understanding what in the world the PRA IS!! It sounds autocratic and seems to have none of the spirit of the genealogists I have been privileged to know online. I, for one, would NEVER join it as it appears petty and mean. Audrey Annable Franklin -

    2. Hi Jennifer and all, Before permanently deleting today's messages I reread some and see that the database Jennifer referred to was the PRA Obituary Database. I have no idea how that is being handled. However, what I said in my message continues to be true and I would like to help anyone who thinks they may be of those two lines, Wells Pennington and Samuel Pennington. Barb T

    1. [Pennington-L] Obtaining information from PRA database
    2. Dear Jennifer, I cannot speak for others and things may have changed at PRA, but I was a member for almost 8 years and was not allowed access to the John French Master File until I volunteered to be a Group Leader. I was then allowed to see the material that I had personally submitted years before. I found some personal material that was not supposed to have been there and spent several months trying to get PRA to delete this material from all files in their possession and even offered to send them new, more accurate information on Group 32's Wells Pennington. I was promised that the personal material would remain confidential. Part of this personal data was information on living persons as well as sad anecdotes my mother shared with me before her death. The names of the living persons were burned onto a Test CD. I believe I was told it was on 34 CD's. Then I was told my mom's personal anecdotes would be removed from the JFMF. The nice man who handled that did remove them but he did not know that there were several other copies in the hands of PRA Board members. Stessed to the max and quite ill, I gave up. I sincerely hope that anyone who reads these little bits of my mother's heartache, will enjoy the experience. That said, if your line is from Wells Pennington who lived at age 18 or 21 in Ashe Co.NC (1800) and later moved on to Whitley, Pulaski, and Wayne Cos. KY, I will share directly with you, any data I have. To my best knowledge, I have the most extensive database on Wells Pennington's line. Wells Pennington died sometime after 1860, and his last known residence was in Pulaski County, KY. I have some, but limited, information on Group 12's Samuel Pennington. If anyone thinks they might be of these lines, let me know. Barb T

    2. Hi All... Today I received 2 emails with the NEW Bad Trans virus. The description of it is below. Each time you download your mail to read be sure to look for a return address with _before the address. Note who it is from and you can let them know they are infected, then delete it from your computer. The "Snow White" virus is making the rounds. For some reason I seem to receive it on weekends. Update you anti-virus program very often. If you don't have one, download one of the free ones offerred on the net. Read the description below....Lois > There is a new form of Bad Trans virus, it comes with a attachment that ends in .scr, and the return address always starts with a _ ( _johndoe@mymail.com ) SO you can FILTER them out by sorting out the _ in the from addresses. CHECK YOUR mail before reading it, if there is a return address preceded by a _ DELETE it unread.

    3. Hello Steve, I think this suggestion of the databases for the various material is plausible. There are a number of things that have to be worked out. Two of the most important that come immediately to my mind is: The logistics (which is major) and finding one or possibly two very dedicated members in the PRA to take on the huge job. This kind of responsiblilty is as major as what Carmen has with the JFMF. There are many people in cyberspace that have a mountain of talent. Perhaps, all of us working together on the subject, we can come up with workable solution. The end result being a overwhelming 'yea' from the Board. I suppose we should first, find out from the people who monitor the list, what their thoughts are and any feedback they can render. Set up some ground rules, so to speak. I believe this is important to find out if there is even a need for this type of thing. It may be that we need to start small (just for the PRA) and see if the members are using the information. Most of all, if it helps them in their research. One thing is for certain, it would certainly be a waste of talent and time if the work was being put forth and no one used the information. But, I don't believe that whatever database is used is not being shared. The PRA is in the business of sharing information, that is what we're all about. It is probably more a matter of "HOW" to share the knowledge. I would love to hear from others on what they think. 1. [Pennington-L] Obituaries
    2. Renee
    3. Hello All, We (PRA) have a Database for Obituaries. I (and possibly a few others on the list) would like to know a few things. Is this database for only persons with Pennington surnames? All descendants? Only direct descendants? Just what is the criteria? Must we have the newspaper with date, what if that is unknown? Do we have to know the group that the Pennington belongs to? Can all of us check in the newspapers in our area for Pennington's and submit them? Is the obituary posted to the list first and then Margaret has them published in the Pedigree? Do we send (attach) the actual copy of the obituary? If the Pennington Group is known and whatever posting is done, does the obituary become a part of the group file automatically? Have all the obituaries been posted in the Pedigrees - how long have we had the database? Is Margaret able to search for a particular person? If we have a database for this subject, is there a reason that we don't have databases for other things, like marriage, births, celebrity status, etc? Is this something we can build for the benefit of the members only? I am the Archivist for another genealogical family. Everything is sent to me from around in the nation. I put the data in a base for others. At the same time, I put what is sent into the master file for the person it pertains to in the family. Consequently, we have a file that is up to date, literally, from yesterdays' headlines. It's almost in 'real time'. (Unless of course I take a week off) Whoever replies to this; it isn't necessary to answer each question but a rough idea of the procedure and what is needed for the obituaries would help. We are all aware that source documentation is most favorable. Also, when replying, PLEASE CC: to the PRA list. I'm sure there are others out there that would like to know what happens in this process. 1. [Pennington-L] I AM IMPRESSED
    2. Renee
    3. Hi To All, I wanted to let all of you know how impressed I am with the talent that we have in this organization. The abundance of expertise in our mist is almost overwhelming. I have spent last night and the complete day at the PRA web-site learning the group descriptions and trying to put faces on our fearless leaders. In doing this, I took a long, hard look at the very well-documented group descriptions, photographs in the descriptions and some very well organized web-sites for some of the groups. Up until the past few days, I went to the web-site to get updated news or a quick answer to an urgent question. I really didn't spend the time to look at each individual group. It was truly my loss. There are a number of groups that have some rather intriguing notes in their descriptions, some common areas of migration along with common time frames. All of these factors have the possibility of sharing a common ancestor from another group. What can I say? I'm excited!! So, consider yourself warned. My head is swimming with questions for most of you. I am also hoping, as we talk, that some of your talents will rub off on my mouse and travel to my head. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. 1. [Pennington-L] Back in the Swing
    2. Renee
    3. Hello Searchers, I wanted everyone to know that I am back from the trail of medical problems. With all of your prayers, I have been given a reprieve. Hopefully, for a long time to come. I have also taken the assignment of ARD (assistant research director). With the help of John Alan Pennington, I'm sure that it will be a smooth take over. I believe he has this down to an art. I want to also assure my Group 9 that this position will in no way hinder my activity of being leader for my group. I am continuing to make way in the source documentation for the group file. Before I left, Group 9 was confirming a link with one of our "long lost cousins". I believe he is going to be stretched between Group 9 and 21. This is very exciting and I will keep you posted on the happenings. Have a wonderful weekend. Renee Group 9 ARD
