    1. [Pennington-L] A Precaution about that Virus
    2. Cher
    3. I will be posting this to other genealogy lists today.. Yesterday I rec'd a message regarding a query I had posted some time ago I think on the web. Possibly genforum.com. In the message, the person asked for my relationship and she would send me more information.. Today I rec'd an attached file with the Surname in the subject. I scanned it with my Updated Norton and it said the file was infected. I thought the person may not realize her computer was infected with the virus, so I sent her a message to warn her. My warning message bounced back with the message below. Note and beware of this return address. There is a chance the person is not quilty, I suppose, but it is extremely suspicious that that message was deliberately sent with the virus. Someone is targeting researchers.....Be VERY careful. 2. Hi, This is for Carmen Johnson, the leader of PRA Group 7: Carmen, I sent you a message via the email address at your Pennington website and it came back to me. Has your address changed? I wanted to tell you, if you don't already have the info, that the Claburn H. Pennington in the 1860 Census at your Census page, is Claiborne H. Pennington, son of Samuel Pennington and Elizabeth Anderson of Grayson Co.VA. He was living at Whitetop. This comes from Claborn (sic)'s Eastern Cherokee Application (ECA). 1. Re: [Pennington-L] Obtaining information from PRA database
    2. At 05:04 PM 11/28/01 -0500, you wrote: >Let me expand a little on the message by Barb, it seems to me that some >people have been putting out information and it is being accepted as fact, >with no solid proof, that it is valid. Dear Tom: I empathize. In February I wrote, privately, to the research director, pointing out five errors in a published reply to an online query. I was informed that some of them had been submitted by the group leader, whose petition would be considered for inclusion in an updated JFMF. My comment at that time was that "the disclaimer fails the straight face test - "the latest and best Pennington family information available to date" indeed. The requirement of a three-tiered petition process for the presentation of corrections or new, documented data defies all common sense." If the disposition of the group leader's petition has ever been made public, I failed to see it. I guess it is time to put my data here: 1. ...Atkey Pennington, b. 1759, d. 1800, m. Martha Ryland, is NOT John Atkey Pennington, b. ca 1744, d. 1826. (see various probate records) 2. The father of Atkey Pennington, b. 15 Sep 1759, was NOT Benedict Pennington, who, incidentally, was b. 13 Sep 1728, and m. Naomi Goldsmith (see various bonds and deeds, Sussex Co, DE); Atkey's father was Benedict's brother James, b. 2 Oct 1723, m. Elizabeth Beastin 11 Dec 1742 (see Early Anglican Church Records of Cecil County, by Henry C. Peden, Jr and settlement of Mary (Atkey) Pennington Ricketts's estate). 3. I am unaware of any evidence that an Abraham Pennington b ca 1670, d. ca 1733, was the father of William Pennington, b. ca 1692, d. Jul 1737; however, there is a strong body of evidence sugggesting a different lineage. 4. Lastly, Marie Pennington who m. Jesse M. Dushane was NOT dau/o Atkey Pennington. Her parents were James & Hannah (McDonough) Pennington; her paternal grandfather was John Atkey Pennington (proven in various deeds and wills). I have not checked the data for the other children listed for Atkey and Martha. When PRA announced the revision of its research and data storage and dissemination policies, I had high hopes this would mean the adoption of high standards in each instance. Alas, this has not happened. And as long as the same old unfounded assumptions and unsourced "facts" are regurgitated, a disservice is being done not only to all persons seeking their Pennington roots but to the genealogical community in general. Sincerely, Isabel Tuell Coburn <dickiz@lincoln.midcoast.com>

The info there is not proven but can provide clues. Once you have some clues, you can go get some evidence, or hopefully proof, to support your work. Good luck in your research. Barb T

    3. Audrey, Audrey, hold your horses! I joined in the fall, and received a most gracious (and lengthy!) reply from Gene to a comment I made that I have Family Treemaker but do not like it. The reply was not only gracious, but included information on how to choose a program, evaluate the ones out there, etc. I think you will find that, like you and me, a lot of people are confused, & seeking help from any corner we can get it, but still willing to help anyone else whenever and however we can. Most others are the same. My impression is that the group leaders are still trying, just like me, to further their own research. I know I spend hours, a lot of it fruitless, but occasionally getting inundated with good information. Besides that, it takes a lot to VERIFY all that! A truly useful family association can't afford to be other than rigorous - a good walk through the message boards for one of my families would convince you of that! One runs into sons born before their fathers, a lady married to 3-4 family members in widely differing locations at the same time, and she must have truly been something because she bore children for nearly a century! Somebody needs to arbitrate the nonsense. And the rest of us need to remember that, most likely, all of us are fallible! Thanks, everyone. Ruth C.
