    2. Hi Lori, In a message dated 7/18/97 1:49:02 AM, you wrote: <<Her Father was William Hyland Pennington supposedly born in Deleware >> Please send me all the information you have handy on this P. Hyland is a given name found among our Penningtons in Monroe Co., VA/WV between 1800 - 1830. And our Group 26 progenitor, William Pennington, Sr. (c1750-1821) of Monroe Co., VA/WV was probably born in either DE or MD, so the links have intrigued me. If there is no link, I can put in touch with folks who have researched the DE Penningtons clans a fair amount. Ric Blake 123 Fieldstone Drive, Londonderry, NH 03053-2709

    3. Dear List Subscribers: Bayoujac asked if Pendleton is a variation of Pennington. We then got three re-sent messages saying that "no it wasn't." That is not quite correct. Pennington is a distinct surname as is Pendleton, but there are many times when the names have been substituted for one another, and there are many other substitution as well. In my own case I have found that Pennington and Pemberton -- two distinct surnames -- have been used for the same family in Baltimore County, MD, who seem to have come from the Cecil Co. Penningtons. The same thing may have happened on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with a Talbot County Quaker family. I haven't done the research on them to completely determine it. There were times when our ancestors decided they didn't want to use their surname anymore and simply changed it themselves. This may have happened because of family disputes, changes to inherit from another family, trouble with authorities, or disownment within their religion. Other more frequent changes occurred because early people didn't always write and records were kept by others. Spellings became confused and one branch of the family found themselves spelling their names differently. Your Cousin, Carolyn

    1. General John B. GORDON, Group 8 link
    2. Rod Pennington
    3. On page 86 of Pennington Pedigrees, Vol. 28(2), there's a blurb regarding CSA General John B. GORDON (one of the more significant confederate generals) being a grandson of Charity KING and Chapman GORDON. Charity KING was the daughter of Charity PENNINGTON and Capt. Charles KING. Charity PENNINGTON was, in turn, the daughter of Isaac PENNINGTON of SC. Thus General GORDON was a descendant of Group 8. There's a GORDON page with more info on General GORDONs line, that may be of interest to those collecting descendants for Group 8. The GORDON page is maintained by Joann GORDON and the URL is: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/5917/GORDON2.HTM I've exchanged emails with Joann and am supplying her with info on Abraham and Isaac PENNINGTON of group 8, as well as info on Capt. Charles KING. The GORDON page already has mention of the General's PENNINGTON and KING ancestry. One thing I had never heard before is that King's Mountain (in NC, I think) is named for Capt. Charles KING. Regards, Rod PENNINGTON Group 8 ================= Rod Pennington Temple, TX rodpenn@sage.net

    2. Steve Privett
    3. At the Virginia Digital Library there is a file of Confederate signatures that includes 113 Penningtons. These are actual scanned pictures of the Confederate roster cards. It can be found at http://image.vtls.com/collections/CF.html once you get to Pennington, you have to view each signature, but they are alphabetical. There is no search for the given name. -- Steve Privett mailto:eqretrodr@earthlink.net http://home.earthlink.net/~eqretrodr/index.html
