    1. James B. Pennington
    2. Please, can someone tell me what happened to this James, born Oct. 23, 1854, came to KY at some point from Lee County, VA. I DO know he was the son of John Pennington b. 1820, and Sarah M. Blankenship, Lee County, VA. What I NEED to know is who James married, names of his children, dates, locations, etc. I SUSPECT he is my great-great grandfather James, who had a son named David Henry Pennington, but I haven't been able to make a definite connection. We think David was born in Hardin County, KY. Please help if you have the slightest clue. If this is the right James, as I think he is, he's my link with eleven generations before him. Thanks, Linda Koenig

    2. Katherine Cochrane
    3. A Canadian friend who knows of my interest in the Pennington family history just sent me a copy of the August 97 issue of "in Britain" magazine, published by the British Tourist Authority. There's an article called "Picture Esk" by Alison Helliwell, about following the River Esk from its source to the sea at Ravenglass, and a picture of Muncaster Castle (with TONS of red and pink azaleas or rhododendrons in front) is accompanied by this text: "Muncaster Castle has been the seat of the Pennington family for more than 700 years and is arguably not the most beautiful of buildings. In fact, set up on a hillside overlooking the meanders of the Esk below, it looks quite a forbidding building, squat and grey. So it is a more than pleasant surprise to find that the walk from the gateway is through beautifully-landscaped gardens filled with colour and the scent of trees, shurbs and flowers and that the castle is actually made of a warm, pink granite. "The castle is still the home of the Penningtons -- something the family believes may be due to the "Luck of Muncaster". Given to one of their 15th-century forebears by Henry VI in return for giving him shelter, the Luck is a glass drinking bowl that, so the legend goes, the king blessed, saying that, as long as it remained intact, the Penningtons would live and thrive at Muncaster. Needless to say, this particular treasure is kept safely locked away but a replica is on display along with many other facinating items including the 16th- and 17th-centruy embroideries, a collection of more than 6,000 books and furniture and paintings collected by the family over the centuries. "The unusual but nice thing about Muncaster is that it really does feel lived in with the family still using many of the rooms on a daily basis. As the guide book warns, among the more unusual exhibits could be a pair of late 20th-century pyjama trousers tucked under a bed in a hurry." The "Further Information" sidebar includes this info: Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass, Cumbria CA18 1RQ, tel: (01229) 717614. Gardesn and owl centre open daily all year. Castle open: mid Mar-end Oct, Sun-Fri 12.30-4pm last admission. Admission: £3.50. The BTA has a website at http://www.bta.org.uk It may be possible to obtain back issues through there if this copy is not available locally. 3. PENNINGTON-L@rootsweb.com To all Pennington Research Association Members: Glenis and I attended the PRA Annual meeting in Sacramento last July. It was a really good time. I encourage anyone interested in Pennington Genealogy and warm friends try going to the meetings if it's at all possible. Barbara and Chuck Pennington, were great hosts, they provided an agenda suitable to any expectations. Go whenever you can. While I was at the meeting, it was apparent the amount of work Steve Privett, does to benefit the Association and those of us on-line was not generally known. Any of you seeing this message know the leadership and work he does to maintain PENNINGTON-L@rootsweb.com. All of us on the internet recognize the PRA website at <http://users.aol.com/SPRIVETT/prahome.htm>. We can see the effort he has provided is greater than most of us can boost. He also runs a business and could have used the space on AOL to promote that instead of promoting the interests of the PRA. So! I think it is in Order for Steve Privett to receive recognition from others, not on-line, if we expect the organization to support him, and us. If you agree. You can help by adding comments or a printed copy of the webpages in your regular snail mail genealogy correspondence. Some of you that have color printers could send webpages to the PRA officers. Their mailing addresses are given in the front of the "Pennington Pedigrees". I imagine this group can come up with better ways, but this could be a start. Most everyone on-line already knows or will find out what Steve does, so I hope you won't use up bandwidth talking it over on the list. Put your effort in on PRA Members "NOT" on-line. Thanks, Jim Pennington Towanda, Kansas penet@kansas.net Those that would like to reply privately, for or against this message, please use STEVE in the header.
