    3. To all who are researching Group 10 of Pennington RA. I am searching for parents of Thomas Pennington who married Leatha Beall 1796 in Rowan Co, NC I have info begond that but can not connect to the William who signed as surety for their marriage. I understand there were a number of Pennington in NCat that time, also Watts. My Frederick Pennington,a son, mar. Elizabeth H. Watts in Jasper Co., GA. Does any of this connect with or sound familiar to anyone. Group 10 is assigned to Thomas Pennington, England of 1630. Has anyone gotten that connection. Anxious to get in touch with someone working on this that has backed up that far. Marie Pennington Humes, Mobile, Al.

    3. THANK YOU..thank you...this has been a great help. I really appreciate and value your time in answering my qurie. Yes, I would be most interested in your classes. I live in Washington State, so probably not close to attend your class personally, but sure would be interested in knowing more abt your internet class. I am on my way to Seattle for left knee surgery...re-lining of the knee cap. I'll be there abt 5 days. I go in on the Oct 2. So If I don't get back to you for a while you'll hopefully understand why. Thanks again. Please have a great one... TTYL: Geanellen ---------- From: Carolyn M. McDaniel <cmac@oregontrail.net> To: PENNINGTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Archives question Date: Thursday, September 25, 1997 12:01 AM Dear Geanellen (gkuranko@sprynet.com) and Cousins, The New Jersey branch is has been researched at great length and much has been contained about them in Pennington Pedigrees. I am sure you will get many answers regarding this line. However, I am responding on the List so that others may know too about Revolutionary War soldiers and pension information. You asked a good question about which files might provide the most genealogical information. The answer is the Pension Files. Military files contain information about whether the soldier was in attendance, pay statements, provide general administrative kinds of information, and therefore are limited genealogically. There is information to be gleaned from Bounty Land Warrants, but again, it is limited. The pension records sometimes contain statements in the pensioner's own hand, and often in his own words. These can be quite thrilling to read and hold, as I have done. Most of the records are now on microfilm. >From Ancestry's listing for National Archives searches.: "Guide to Genealogical Research in The National Archives," p.125 "During the Revolutionary War, Congress used pension legislation and the promise of free land to encourage enlistment and the acceptance of commissions. After the war, such legislation constituted a reward for service already rendered. As years passed and the number of Revolutionary War veterans, widows, and their heirs decreased, pensions became increasingly generous, and qualifications for pensions increasingly less stringent. Most Revolutionary War pension application files are in envelopes containing applications and other records pertaining to claims for pensions or bounty land warrants. They may also appear in the form of summary cards with information about claimants for whom no original application papers exist or cross-reference cards to envelopes and summary cards. "All of the contents of all of the files are reproduced on Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land-Warrant Application Files, M804, 2,670 rolls. An introduction to this microfilm publication is reproduced on each roll and is also printed in the accompanying descriptive pamphlet. This introduction contains an excellent explanation of the eligibility requirements of the various resolutions and acts of Congress, 1776–1878, establishing pensions for Revolutionary War service. Also explained are the symbols and numbers on the envelopes. Understanding the symbols is not essential to use the records, however, because the files are now arranged in alphabetical order. "A second microfilm publication, Selected Records From Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land-Warrant Application Files, M805, 898 rolls, reproduces all records from envelope files containing up to 10 pages of records, but only significant genealogical documents are microfilmed from larger files." Additionally, there are printed abstracts of the Revolutionary War Pension files. I am going to be teaching a genealogy class at the local community college beginning tomorrow night and I am really excited over it, and have been assembling a lot of information for that and for my internet genealogy class. 3. Dear Cassie and Cousins on the List, In regard to your quest for information on the Fulton Co, OH families, I have: I believe this connects to the previous question I answered regarding Revolutionary War Pension Applications, specifically the NJ lines. There was an Ephraim, Revolutionary War soldier, and it appears these are descended from or connected to him. I thought I had some additional information on later descendants of this family, but my computer files are all messed up due to a computer malfunction a couple of months ago. I have done extensive searching of Ohio Pennington families. Additionally my own Pennington line involves the surnames Smart and Williams, which you mention in your signoff. I have quite involved research on both those lines, but due to getting ready for my genealogy class tonight, I can't dig for it right now. Write me more details on your other lines. 3. I've queried and searched, stayed up late too often, surfing through genealogical labyrinths and falling into familial chasms -- all for this glorious obsession -- but to no avail. Will someone out there throw me lifeline or a solid branch from the family tree? I'm looking for my ggg-grandfather's parents in hopes of finding the missing link to my Pennington past. We SW Kansas Penningtons descend from one ANDREW JACKSON PENNINGTON, b. 1824 in Clay Co. KY; d. 1900 in Howard Co. IN; m. 1843 to MARY POLLY AVERY. Was a Union officer and POW who escaped from Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. His children include Solomon Andrew, Elijah Winfield, William J. and Isaac Newton Pennington. Please have mercy, and I promise to never again write such a lengthy message. Pax Penningtonus, Gregory Leaming gleam@bellsouth.net Murfreesboro, TN 615/904-0009

    3. I am new to this Pennington list and to my Pennington research. I am trying to fill out the National Archives order for copies of records on Lt. John Pennington and am finding out that I know very little abt him, at least for what I need to fill out these forms. 1st: I can only check one box. so which one would be the best to get the most genealogical information?: a. Pension b. bounty-land warrant app. c. military 2. I have a book written by : Dr. Charles Vantuyl of Porter, OK, that states that Jane Pennington born 29 July 1817 in Plainfield, Somerset Co. N.J. and died: 22 Mar. 1901. was a daughter of William Pennington who was b. 2 Aug. 1793 and Ann Brown. Wm. and Ann were married 13 Sept 1813. Jane was also a granddaughter of Lt. John Pennington (1715-1783) who served in the Revolutionary War. I also have a copy of a letter written by Clara B. Speiser (sp? hard to read) written in 197 9 to Dr. Charles Vantuyl. she list alot of Pennington genealogy history and in it she states that John Pennington was a Lt. in Revolutionary War. and gives his birth and death dates. she says that he married Ann Brown 13 Sept 1815 and that their children were: Jane Pennington , John Pennington B. 16 Oct. 1829 N.J., Died 1 Aug 1909, Married Matilda Coon. Ann V; James; William, Jonathan, Sara Jane, Arthur and Otto twins, Mary Adelin, Emma, Julia Matilda Does any one have any information on this family? Especially Lt. John Pennington? I need to know what state he served from, and any thing else that might prove to be helpful in this search. Thanks again, for any and all help. Geanellen:gkuranko@sprynet.com

    2. Alice, I am so glad you responded. We may have a connection, at least it looks good so far. My first information about the Penningtons listed my Abel Lane as the son of William Pennington, but I spoke with a PRA researcher recently who said that it was more likely that he was the son of Abel Jr., son of Able Sr. Your Able Jr., would have been the right age to be the father of my Able Lane. And the fact that Betsy named her child Rebecca Lane seems important to me, too. I'm sure you noticed that Taladega County was mentioned several times in my line. I am encouraged by all this and to answer your question, yes, please send more information. I met a woman a year or so ago who was researching the Poole/Pennington family. Her name will not come to me at the moment, but I have it written down somewhere and I know I can locate her again. I want to show her your note and see if she has any information that would help you. Frances

    3. Frances We just may have a connection but I don't know how just yet! My ggg grandmother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Pennington Ramsey Poole b abt 1791 in GA and dies in Tuscaloosa Co. Al before 1819. Her father was Abel Pennington b abt 1755 in Wilkes Co., NC and died 26 Dec 1818 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. Some sources say his wife was Sarah Sweetin and others say Sarah Burns. There are a lot of Burns buried in the cemetary where he is but I think his wife died before he ever left GA. He had a son named Abel, jr. b abt 1788 but think would have been long before your Abel Lane. I have no information on his descendants. One thing that makes me think there may be a connection is that one of Betsy's children was named Rebecca Lane! Let me know if you would like any of the other info I have on the Penningtons.
