    1. [PENNINGTON-L] Susan Pennington
    2. Hi Everyone: I just love reading about our ancestors and thought I would share this with everyone. Debbie The Pennington family of the Randolph County area is of English ancestry. They came to Virginia before the state was divided in 1865. My grandfather, Vincent B. Pennington was a Circuit Rider, traveling throughout the Dryfork area. He married Phoebe Flannigan who had come to this area with her family from Ireland, during the potato famine there. Vincent and Phoebe had six children, one of which was my father, Vincent Brown (Wick) Pennington, who was born in Harman in 1872. He was married at a young age to Anna Graham. They had eight children. Their names were: Dick, Lester, Frenie, Mable, Mamie, Zenia, Lilly, and Nellie. While still quite young, Wick became a widower, at which time he and the children moved to Ellamore, W.Va., Randolph County. Here he met and married Bertha Kittle. She was of Cherokee Indian descent. They had eight children as follows: June, Mena, Frances, Mary, and Susan. The boys were: Bryan, Mack, and Farren (Bud). All of these children attended Randolph County schools. Mack was in the death march in Corrigdor. He died in a Japanese Prison Camp in 1942. Bryan and Bud also served in WW II. In 1930. Bertha Kittle Pennington died. Being the youngest daughter of the family and only 4 years old at the time, I cannot remember too much about this sad time. I do remember in later years of learning to swim in the Middle-Fork River at Ellamore with my brothers and sisters. The Osboume, Booth, and Goodwin families joined us and we had a wonderful time. Later my father, Wick Pennington retired from the railroad after 30 years of service. We moved to the Half-Way House and lived there until we bought a General Store in Coalton. The Half-Way House is presently owned by Mrs. Dot Lewis. In Coalton, I worked in the store, which was called, "The Pennington General Store," until I married Herbert D. Simmons in 1944. Later the general store together with five houses surrounding it burned to the ground. Many valuable possessions were lost in the this fire, including certificates and photos. My father then moved to Elkins and lived there until his death in 1955. He is buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Elkins. After my marriage, my husband was discharged from the Merchant Marines and we moved to Sevema Park, Maryland, where we raised our four children. There were: Terrance W. (1945), Andrea (1947), David A. (1949), and Kathryn (1951). We also have five grandchildren. Namely: Tracy and Erin Simmons, Mark and Matthew Perkins, and David A. Simmons, Jr. They have visited Randolph County on several occasions. My husband died in 1985. Later, I moved to the state of Florida where I remarried. My present husband is William Helms, formerly of Grafton, W.Va. This was submitted by: Susan Pennington from the book: Randolph County West Virginia Histories-Families 1787-1991 by Don Mills, Inc. and the Randolph County History Book Committee, page 114.

    3. Sorry, I know nothing more then William Pennington was listed as a child on his fathers Rev.War papers. Then I found some old family history that listed Jonathan VanTuyl and his wife Jane Pennington then it went on to give their marriage dates, each's birth and death date and said that Jane was the daughter of Wm Pennington and Ann Brown. no, birth, death or marriage date for this Wm and Ann Brown. I am in the process of trying to find a death record for Jane Pennington, thinking it might give more clues to her parents. Oh, yes one other thing, these families were of NJ, Somerset Co. I have not seen any census records yet. I had surgery on the 28th of Sept. (3 1/2 hrs long) 6 day stay in hospital.. total left foot reconstruction with a triple fusion. using bone from my pelvis for the fusion..I have been in a cast for the last 6 weeks, with no weight on either the leg or foot.. sooo I have been in "training" using a front wheel walker and hoping around on one leg...for the old age home...:-) This coming Fri, I'll get a walking cast on for another 6 weeks. but hopefully I can drive myself around and do some research at a local genealogy library. ttyl: Geanellen. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Wilson <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 07, 1999 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [PENNINGTON-L] Jane Pennington VanTuyl/ death - obit > Can you tell me if William and Ann Brow-Pennington had a sone named > Wells Pennington who., married Elizabeth Strunk? > > Thank you, > > Carol Ann, > > > ==== PENNINGTON Mailing List ==== > Threaded archives can now be found at > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/PENNINGTON-L/ >

Are you saying that Timothy Pennington & Mary T. Fullen were parents of Ephriam Pennington b. 1785? If so, then Mary Fullen would have been 50 years old at the time of her marriage and this Ephraim's birth -- not impossible, but pretty unlikely. Maybe there's a generation missing in there. I'm very interested in where your information came from, since I'm descended from the OTHER Ephraim-Timothy line (Group IV), and would want to make sure the records of these two groups didn't get confused, given that they lived in relative geographic & temporal proximity. In particular, what leads you to think your original Ephraim might have moved to VA from PA? Is it possible this was a confusion with Group IV's progenitor who did that (after probably having come to PA from NJ)? I'm not saying it's impossible for two Ephraim Penningtons to have lived in PA & moved south (Group IV Ephraim to northwestern NC, yours to southwestern VA) around the same time, but it does seem a bit coincidental. Where could your elder Ephraim have come from? The Penningtons had been in NJ for about 4 generations by then, so there could easily have been several lines with Ephraims at that time, but I haven't seen any information about this previously unknown Ephraim. It may be that two families with similar names could have caused confusion about pre-Revolutionary activities in VA by Group IV Timothy. Marvin Jones had writen about records indicating Ephraim & Timothy (of Group IV) were in both Rowan/Wilkes Co., NC and in Lee Co., VA before moving to Barren Co., KY. Maybe the ones in Lee/Montgomery Co. (which is not far from Rockbridge Co.) were actually not the Group IV ones, but were yours. Or, the Lee/Montgomery Co. events could have been [the distinct] Group IVs' after all, occurring while they were migrating from NC to KY. This sounds like a completely new group to me, unless somehow they are some of the same people and some info has been mixed up. I hate to throw out yet more unsubstantiated speculation, but is it possible that the elder Ephraims and Timothys (Group IV and yours) were the same people? If Group IV's Timothy was born earlier than we think he was (in 1738 instead of ca. 1749), maybe he had a first marriage to Mary Fullen, and later married Susanna "Nancy" Riggs? But if that was the case, you'd think your family would have some information about Timothy's "second" family. Do you have any information about siblings of your older Timothy (b. 1738), or your younger Ephraim (b. 1785)? If he was an only child, perhaps his mother died when he was little, and his father could have remarried. I think it's more likely that there's a missing generation between Timothy b. 1738 and Ephraim b. 1785. Lots of research to do here!
