    3. Dallas, You may actually be able to shed some light on the issue I just brought up then... From what I have, Lillian Stamps descends from Ann Marshall Pennington who I have listed as the d/o John George Pennington. I'd like to solve the apparent coflict of John George's wife along with knowing who his brother James married. Do you have any of Lillian's research that deals with this issue? Steve P

    3. Selah, It's bad enough that my grandmother, Lucy Bugg, d/o John Bugg and Lucy Pennington, was lost for over two-hundred years in Kentucky history (and in Virginia and beyond) because compilers of early family history failed to check John Bugg's will and published a lineage that excludes my grandmother and her sister, Elizabeth. Now, I am dismayed to see that her name is "Boog" in these important records. I'll post Lucy Bugg's line, and also the wills for John Bugg, and for Sir. Thomas, William and Edward Pennington. 1. [PENNINGTON-L] Martha Pennington/ John Harper (Group 10)
    2. Sue H. Gill
    3. Hi, I've gone through the > John Pennington of Sussex County Va. 1691-1766 email, and will add the following: > 3. Martha (Pennington), ca 1763 or 68-1860, married > John Harper (This was in 1785) Has anyone actually seen the marriage information from the county on this couple? According to the marriage record book, John needed consent from his father, John Harper, Sr. But in the book, there is no mention of Martha needing consent. According to two census reports, she was born in 1768. If she had been born in 1768, she would also have needed a consent to get married. However, if she was born in 1763, she would not. Does anyone know where the "1763" came from? I'm still undecided about what to put for the date of birth. > (8.?) Jennie (Pennington) married Selah Smithson? Listed as a possible child of John George Pennington? His will named daughter, Jincy Connell. I think this is Jane, who married James Connell. When Mary, wife of John George, died, she also left a will. She named: Nancy Connell, Martha Connell, (Jiney?) Connell; g-dau, Polly L. Oslin; son, David Pennington. Jane Connell and Martha Harper were also named. Looked through my marriage records, and the closest thing I could find for a Selah Smithson might be: Pennington, William and Drusilla Smithson 25 Nov. 1780. (Lunenburg book spells it Drusela). I don't personally have any information to support a daughter of John George Pennington named Jennie, marrying a Smithson. In the will of John George Pennington, he names a daughter, Martha. Mecklenburg Co. Will Book 3, page 409. He also names wife Mary; other children: Ann (m. Oslin), David, Sukey Nash, John, Jincy Connell, William. Mecklenburg Deed Book 13, p. 465. Mary Pennington, for love and affection of her daughter, Martha Harper, and for granddaughter, Frances W. Harper; also for g-dau. Nancy Connell. Mecklenburg Will Book 10, p. 143. Will of Mary Pennington. This is where she mentions Nancy Connell, Martha Connell, and Jiney Connell; also g-dau. Polly L. Oslin; deceased son David. Money arising from estate to be divided equally between Jane Connell and Martha Harper. Even though John George only gave us the name Martha, we do see the name Jincy Connell. When his wife "Mary" deeded property, it was to daughter, Martha (where we've added Harper); we pick up the next generation with Nancy Connell, and another granddaughter, Frances W. Harper. We know from the will of John Harper (husband of Martha Pennington) that there was a daughter, Frances, who married Benjamin Gee. The marriage records give name Frances W. Harper, as did Mary Pennington's deed. Without "assuming" Martha is the one that married John Harper, other records are searched and evidence documented for absolute proof. > 6. John, 1764- , Married twice: > (a) Sally Graves of Sussex > (b) Temperance Parker of Sussex I'm sorry to say that I have not fully documented siblings and their lines. Can someone share with me documentation for the above marriages? >From the way the will read (John George Pennington), I thought there might have been something wrong with the son, John. "for my said son David to support my son John with reasonable maintenance during my said son's life as to his (own?) person." (The microfilm was extremely faded in parts of the will). That one sentence was the only place I ever saw John mentioned. In Mary's will she did mention that David had died. John's name not mentioned as an heir here. > Martha (Pennington) to John Harper > in 1810 Mecklenburg. This was in regards to their marriage. Martha Pennington m. John Harper in Mecklenburg Co. 7 Dec. 1785 (m.b.), not 1810. > Can you give me more info and documentation concerning John Harper and > Mary M. Pennington? Did you mean John Harper and "Martha" Pennington, his wife? The only "Mary M." I have is Mary M. Harper, daughter of John and Martha (Pennington) Harper. Yes, you are welcome to share any information I might pass along. Wish I could give you more. Sue

    3. Barb, I don't see anything on a stabbing of Andrew Pennington.... On Sunday there was a posting about a double killing in Leslie Co KY.... with a subject line of "Druken, feuding Pennington's from Leslie County KY" But I don't see an Andrew listed in it. There was a request from Rick (William) to repost an item about an Andrew killed at a barn dance by a Cornett, but I don't find which message that is referring to. Keep in mind that if you think you missed something, which sometimes happens as a server along the way will not think you exist and therefore bounces the mail.... you can always check out the archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/PENNINGTON-L/ Steve P Pennington listowner [email protected] wrote: > > Hello, > I have been told that a message was sent out on the list yesterday > regarding a stabbing death of Andrew Pennington. > I did not receive such a message and wonder why. 3. Al and other Group 10 people... This is an area of confusion it appears. I've just spent a little time looking at this portion and there is conflict that I don't have resolved at this time. I've misplaced my copy of the V11N1 article of the PP that addresses Group 10 so I can't get a complete grasp on it at this time... The article in the New member packet says that Mary Smith is the w/o James Sr. However in V11 N1 p 55 of the PP, Mary Smith is listed as the w/o John George P. Now apparently Lillian Stamps has shed some light on this conflict in an article in V17N2 pp 7-10 but I've not seen that article. I also show that Mary Pare(Pair) married John s/o Edward and Tabitha and that they had 5 children. Obviously we need to do some digging here. I've not had time to dig into it, so if anyone can, it would be appreciated. Steve P Group 10 Leader PS... sorry if you get this twice, but I've not double checked my Group 10 list against the current subscribers of the Pennington list... jmatth98 wrote: <SNIP> > James Sr. married Mary Smith, d/o John and Paulina Smith of Mecklenburg, > VA. 2. jmatth98
    3. Hi Justin, Reginald Sue and Steve, Each of you made posting about Group 10's John Pennington of Sussex County, VA, 1691-1766 My notes some times are hearsay from previous Penningtons and therefore could have errors. Suggest we run this info through Steve Privett's computer for accuracy. My ancestor James Pennington Sr., 1725-1803, and John George Pennington, 1722-1797, were brothers, s/o Thomas Pennington, II and his wife Mary (Allen?) James Sr. married Mary Smith, d/o John and Paulina Smith of Mecklenburg, VA. James' son, Henry, ca 1762- , married Patty Smith, a sister of Mary. James' daughter was Lucy (Pennington) Smith. It was not unusual in those days for several in one family to be married to several in another family. John George, 1722-1797, married Mary (Pare) and had 7 children: 1. William, 1759- , married Celia or Drucella Smithson 2. Jane (Pennington), ca 1761- , married James Connell 3. Martha (Pennington), ca 1763 or 68-1860, married John Harper 4. Sukey (Pennington), ca 1765- , married James Nash 5. David, ca 1767-1807/08, who married a Smith, perhaps another sister of Mary (Smith). 6. John, 1764- , Married twice: (a) Sally Graves of Sussex (b) Temperance Parker of Sussex 7. Ann Marshall (Pennington) Oslin, 1771- , who married Isaac Oslin (8.?) Jennie (Pennington) married Selah Smithson? John George Pennington was named for his great grandfather, Col. John George of Surry. John. George was a patriot in the Revolutionary War. He provided beef in 1782 for Continental use. (Mecklenburg, VA., Order Book 5, page 124) John George was surety for the wedding of Sukey(Pennington) to James Nash in 1786 Mecklenburg, and for Martha (Pennington) to John Harper in 1810 Mecklenburg. This line was researched by his descendant Lillian (Oslin) Stamps of Nashville, TN. John George left a Mecklenburg will 1 Jan. 1787/10 Apr. 1779. See PP2-1, pg 51 for marriage records. Edward Harper, my ancestor John Macon, and Matthew Edloe witnessed the will of William Jones in 1718 Surry. William made a bequest to Edmund Hubbard, his brother(in-law?). The Joneses, Macons and Hubbards were my Charles City County and Surry County relatives as well as the Penningtons. William Pennington, 1759- ,s/o John George Pennington married (Celia?) Smithson and they had a son William and (2 daughters?) The Mecklenburg, VA Deed Book #20, 447 shows that in 1824 (LT>) Drury Pennington of my line and ,probably his brother, Benjamin Pennington acting as Commissioners for the Court to sell the estate of William Pennington deceased which was totally helf in dower by Druselly Murrell, lately Druselly Pennington. William Pennington (Probably 1759- ), married in 1799 to Nancy Murrell, with the Rev. Aaron Brown, Methodist minister of Brunswick , VA. officiating. The Murrells were part of our Jones family. Can "Selly" and Celia be the same persons? Can you give me more info and documentation concerning John Harper and Mary M. Pennington? Sorry but I don't have info on William M. Pennington's children. I do know that the Drumwright family lived near my Hubbard family in Brunswick County, VA. William Pennington 1715-1784, of Brunswick, VA. was the 2nd son of Thomas Pennington II. He inherited 100 acres on Stoke's Mill Swamp in Surry from his father in 1727. Later moved to Brunswick, VA., married Mary and had 4 children: 1. Isaac or "Sack" Pennington, ca 1740-1795 married Anna Pepper 1740-1784 2. Lucy (Pennington) Bogg, 17420 , married John Bogg, s/o Benjamin Bogg 3. Betsy (Pennington) Collier, ca 1744- , married Howell Collier 4. Holmes Pennington, ca 1846- William left a will in 1784 Brunswick. It was witnessed by John Marshall, Jesse Oslin, Joseph Williams and others. The Colliers lived in Surry next to my Matthews family farm. The Boggs intermarried with Group 7 of Lee County, VA. Edmon Pennington, 1715-after 1741, of Surry was the 3rd son of Edward Pennington, and probably grandson of Thomas Pennington (I). Edmon married Sarah (Bird?) ca 1740 and had a son William, 1741- . DO NOT confuse with William Pennington, 1759- . Godparents for William were William Cock, Timothy Ezell, Jr. and the Rev. William Willie's wife, Elizabeth, of Albemarle Parish. Edmon was a brother of John Pennington called "The Carpenter". Both inherited land on Stokes Mill Swamp in Surry. Edmon Pennington, Hannah (Pennington) and Sarah Bird were Godparents in 1740 for Hannah Hancock, d/o Clement and Anthony Hancock. Group 7 has William Bird Pile, 1811-1904 Sarah's descendant in it. Group 8 has the Bird, Moore,Hawthorn & Stewart family relatives of Hannah (Boone) Stewart Pennington. Justin's Moss family are descendants of John "The Carpenter". Justin, Sue & Reginald, May we have permission to reprint your postings or queries in Pennington Pedigrees? It may bring forth more info from others of Group 10? Need and e-mail from you so stating. Thanks, Al Matthews Selah Smithson
