    1. [PENNINGTON-L] Standards for Sound Genealogical Research
    2. Steve Privett
    3. Standards for Sound Genealogical Research Recommended by the National Genealogical Society: Remembering always that they are engaged in a quest for truth, family history researchers consistently-- -- record the source for each item of information they collect. -- test every hypothesis or theory against credible evidence, and reject those that are not supported by the evidence. -- seek original records, or reproduced images of them when there is reasonable assurance they have not been altered, as the basis for their research conclusions. -- use compilations, communications and published works, whether paper or electronic, primarily for their value as guides to locating the originalrecords. -- state something as a fact only when it is supported by convincing evidence, and identify the evidence when communicating the fact to others. -- limit with words like 'probable' or 'possible' any statement that is based on less than convincing evidence, and state the reasons for concluding that it is probable or possible. -- avoid misleading other researchers by either intentionally or carelessly distributing or publishing inaccurate information. -- state carefully and honestly the results of their own research, and acknowledge all use of other researchers' work. -- recognize the collegial nature of genealogical research by making their work available to others through publication, or by placing copies in appropriate libraries or repositories, and by welcoming critical comment. -- consider with open minds new evidence or the comments of others on their work and the conclusions they have reached. Sorry about that, whatever the mistake is. Artilla Williams group 30 Well, we all make mistakes. However, I've never before seen any information about the descendants you mentioned being children of Ephraim b. 1620, and the confusion about whether it was him or his son who married Mary Brockett is also a bit disconcerting. It would probably be a good thing to know where your info came from so it could be verified. Most of the early Puritan colonies kept pretty good vital records, so if those still exist for New Haven that would be one place to look. New Haven, because of the way it was split up within a generation, with some including an Ephraim Pennington removing to Newark, NJ, may be more confusing than most, however. Cheers, Katherine

    2. The children attributed to Ephraim Pennington in Artilla Williams' note are the children of Thomas Pennington (1810-1900) and Mary Francis Oates, both of Jefferson and Burke Counties, GA. The Charles Pennington listed is my ancestor. 1. [PENNINGTON-L] suggestion
    2. Hi all and happy new year, I have a suggestion that might save those of us in the Digest mode a little time. When scanning the list of subject lines at the beginning of the digest, I'm naturally looking for something that tips me off as to whether there's anything which relates to my group, family, location, etc. More than half the time, it seems the subject lines begin with "Pennington," -- which takes up most of the space! Since we can pretty well assume that ALL messages are going to be about Penningtons, how about leaving that out of the subject line, and concentrating on the location or group number or anything else that will tip us off at first glance. That way we don't have to scroll way down the page to find that particular message to see what it's really about. Does this make sense to anyone but me? I think it would be a real timesaver. Thanks! 3. That's pretty talented, for a man who died in 1660 to have children born in the mid-1800s! Maybe a page or two got lost in between? Also, I believe it was this Ephraim's son, also named Ephraim, who married Mary Brockett. 3. Dimmon Pennington was son of Welcome Pennington and Mahala Moore, according to Doug Moore http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/gendex/d0001/g0000032.html#I0568 5 "Mahala is the daughter of Garrett Moore and Agnes Denton. Garrett Moore came to northern Jackson (Clay) county around 1800-1810 and settled in the Brimstone Creek-Moss area. His Mahala was born in 1819 and married Welcome Pennington perhaps around 1840. They lived in the Moss area and are buried in a Pennington Cemetery in Clay Co near Boles, Monroe Co., KY." Another Sims-Pennington connection in the Monroe Co., Ky., area is that of the sisters, Anna and Rebecca Sims, daus. of William and Sarah Jane Hall, who married John Bugg Gee, Sr., and James Pennington Gee, sons of James Gee and Lucy Bugg (Lucy Pennington, William, Thomas). 3. forwarded by listowner -------- Original Message -------- Subject: (no subject) Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2000 16:12:53 -0800 (PST) From: [email protected] To: [email protected] My name is Stacy McKitrick. I'm new at this, but I believe I'm part of Group 21, the Delaware Penningtons. I'm not sure what to do, so hopefully this won't be too long. John Pennington was born in Belfast, Ireland on May 16, 1819. In 1850 he married Maria McKay presumably in Delaware. Maria was born in October 1830 in Edinburgh, Scotland. John and Mary travelled from Delaware to California, with a stop in Illinois for a time. John died on April 18, 1899. Marie died in 1913. Both are buried in the San Luis Obispo Cemetery in San Luis Obispo, California (I have seen their graves). Their children: 1. Jane Ann, b. Dec 13, 1850 (Dover, DE), d. 1931 (Los Angeles, CA) 2. Margaret Russell, b. July 1852 (Belvedere, IL), d. 1921 (Oakland, CA) 3. Alfred (John), b. 1855/1856 (Belvedere, IL), d. 1919 (Oakland, CA) 4. Eliza A., b. June 2, 1863 (IL or CA), d. She married Horatio Southgate Rembaugh (Rumbaugh) on May 17, 1872 in San Luis Obispo, California. Horatio was born on August 3, 1840 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Horatio died on February 12, 1917 in Alameda, California and is buried in Oakland, CA. Jane died in 1931 in Los Angeles and is buried next to her parents in San Luis Obispo. Their children: 1. Edith, b. Mar 28, 1873 (CA), d. around 1938 (Los Angeles, CA) 2. Grace May, b. Feb 1, 1876 (CA), d. June 15, 1945 (Hollywood, CA) 3. Elsie Viola, b. Mar 28, 1881 (CA), d. May 12, 1965 (CA) My direct line falls under Grace May Rembaugh. She married David Arthur Stuart on June 15, 1897 in San Francisco, California. David was born on October 23, 1867 in County Armagh, Ireland. David died in June 1941 in Berkely, California and is buried in Santa Monica, CA. Grace died on June 15, 1945 in Hollywood and is buried in Glendale, CA. Their children: 1. Eric McClelland, b. April 17, 1898 (CA), d. May or June 1962 (bur in Glendale, CA) 2. Isabel, b. Joe was born on March 30, 1892 in Cauther Crooks, Scotland. Joe and Barbara divorced on September 11, 1950. Barbara married a second time to Leslie Oris Meredith on September 11, 1950 in Reno, Nevada. Leslie was born on May 7, 1902 in Akron, Indiana. Joe died in September 1987 in Oceanside, California. April 10, 1985 (Long Branch, NJ) I have additional information on the other children in John's line. If anyone wants that, I'll be happy to share it. I don't know any other information on John Pennington, meaning, I don't know who his parents are. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

    3. Hi Mary, Thanks for the info. I don't have much on the family of Benjamin Clark Pennington, so will just have to hold this in the file and see if I can get additional info to substantiate dates, etc. I did find one item in Pennington Pedigrees Vol. 1, No. 2, pg 26: Benjamin Clark b. 1842 in Miss. Went with his uncle "Pink" McManus to Wagner? Waggoner? near Ft. Worth and Dallas, Texas by ox cart, lived and died there. His family did not know if married or not, called "Clark." This note is in conflict with other info in the file. According to what I have, Pinkney Jackson "Pink" McManus married Ada Lou Pennington, a descendant of Jesse M. Pennington. By this, Ada Lou Pennington and Clark were second cousins, once removed, so this Pink was not Clark's uncle -- unless I have a Pink McManus missing??? Benjamin Pennington Jr. was a son of Benjamin Sr. who was brother to your 2g-gf Solomon, so you would be related to any descendants of Benjamin Clark Pennington. You might query the cousin and see if he has additional info on the family. If I get any further info, will be sure to let you know. The date of William Pennington's will is 27 Sept 27. 1783, proved 23 Feb. 1784 (Brunswick Co., VA, Will Book 2 pp. 259-261) names Sack Pennington as executor. William's brother, Edward, left a will dated 1752, Brunswick Co., VA., so that is likely causing the confusion in the dates of the Pennington wills. Children named in the will do not include a Holmes P.; however, a PENNINGTON HOLMES is named as a grandson. Family named in the will are: Betsy Collier, Rebeccah Collier, Elizabeth Collier, granddaughters; John Bugg, son-in-law; Benjamin Bugg, grandson; Pennington Holmes, grandson; Elizabeth Holmes, granddaughter; Edward Collier, grandson; Bettey, daughter; Sack Pennington, son; There were other children, according to data collected by Steve Privett and the PRA, who are not named in the will. My ggg-grandmother was Lucy Pennington Bugg, who m. John Bugg, identified as a son-in-law in William's will. My gg-grandfather is named Sack H. Gee, so I have long looked for the source of "Sack" as a Christian name in the Pennington-Bugg line, and wondered if William's mother or wife's surname could have been "Sack." I posted several Pennington, Bugg and Gee wills to the Pennington list recently, and I do have an extra copy of both William and Edward's wills, which I'll be glad to mail you if you'll send me your address. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse

    3. Dear Al, One of the reasons that Edward "Neddy" Pennington is attributed to Group 7 is that there is a death record that lists his father has Micajah...the information was given by either a daughter or granddaughter. Also...Edward is listed with a bastardy bond in NC for a daughter by Agnes Little. The child is in the household of Micajah and Rachel Jones Pennington in 1800. She evidently dies sometime afterward because there is no more mention of her. You can see the Bible entry with Edward Pennington's name on the PRA Group 7 page. However, I believe that many of these Penningtons who lived in close confines ie Lee Co., VA, Grayson Co., VA, Ashe Co., NC, & Wilkes Co., NC are somehow connected...I don't think that I am new with that opinion...but info like what you have listed is certainly interesting. 3. Dear Steve and List, Group 10's Thomas Pennington of Surry County, VA. had a grandson, William Pennington, 1715-1784, of Brunswick County VA. William was the father of 4 children: 1. Isaac P. ca 1740-1795, called "Sack" who married Anna Pepper 2. Lucy (P.), 1742- , who married John Bugg, s/o Benjamin Bugg 3. Betsy (P.), ca 1744- , who married Howell Collier 4. Holmes P., ca 1746- , who was the executor of his father's will in 1752 Brunswick, VA. John Marshall, Jesse Oslin, Joseph Williams, and other witnessed the will. William P. is listed in the 1782 Census of Mecklenburg, County, VA. John P., ca 1718-1766, of Sussex County, VA. was called "the carpenter". He was another grandson of Thomas P., and a cousin of William P. Edmon P., 1715- , of Surry, VA. was still another of Thomas' grandson, and a brother of John the Carpenter. Edmon P., Hannah (P) Wrenn, and Sarah Bird were godparents for Hannah Hancock in Albemarle Parish in 1740. Edmon P> married Sarah (Bird?) ca 1740, and they had a son, William, born 1741, whose line probably included William Bird Pile of Group 8. The Group 10 Penningtons were associated with and related to the Stewart family, descendants of Hannah (Boone) Stewart Pennington. Tabitha (P.) married Elsey (or Eli?) Bugg, 1781-1869, of Wise County, VA. Jeb Stuart's family in Wise County changed the way the family spelled its surname, but it is the same family. James P., Jr. 1752-ca 1833 of Henry County, KY. was a great grandson of Thomas P. During the Revolutionary War, he served in four military units: 1. 1776- in Capt. John Ballard's Co. of Col. Ruffin's Va. regiment. 3. 1781 in Capt. Marshall's Co. of Col. Deadmen's Va. regiment. 4. 1781 in Capt. John Bugg's Co. James,Jr. married Rachael Vick of Southampton County, VA. The Albemarle Parish Register of Surry and Sussex Counties, VA. records the marriage of David and Lydia Pennington and the births of their 8 children: 1. Leah in 1755 with Godparents Charles Wood, Phoebe Lofting, Elizabeth Pennington 2. Tabitha, in 1758 3. Sarah Gilliam (P.) in 1760 4. Kinchen, 1761 with Godparents John Judkins, John Shands, Sarah Freeman 5. NED, 1763, Joshuah P., John Williams, Elizabeth Moore 6. Jane Green (P.), 1765 Anslem Gilliam, Martha Clanton, Selah Rachael 7. Nelson, 1767, Wm. Wrenn, Richard Hamlin, Elizabeth Gilliam 8. Tampe, 1769 Isam Gilliam, Patty Clanton & Peggy Newsom. All of the Godparents came from families who once lived in the Rich Neck in Surry County, VA. PP1---2, pg. 38 in 1969 tells about: 1. NEDDY P., 1769-1860, of Ashe County, N.C. and Lee County VA. He married Martha Flanary, 1779-1852, d/o or br/o John Flanary and Phoebe (Bugg). PP supposes NEDDY P. is from Group 7 but advises they cannot prove it. Bee Holmes refers to a death certificate and a Bible record but no birth or parent documentation. PP1-2, pg. 5 notes census records: 1. Neddy's birth in APR in 1763, Kinchen 1765, Nelson 1767, David ca 1735. 2. Neddy and Kinchen in Salisbury District of Rowan N.C. in 1775 (New Member info 1995). 3. 1790 Wilkes County N.C. John Flanary, 1790 Montgomery County N.C. - David, Kinchen, Neddy and Nelson. 4. 1800 Montgomery County N.C. - David, Kinchen, Neddy 5. 1810, David Jr. Montgomery, N.C. 6. 1820 Lee County, VA., David, Edward, Joshua, Micajah 7. 1830 Montgomery, N.C. - David, Kinchen, Ned, Nelson, Will 8. 1840 Montgomery, N.C. - David, Kinchen, Nelson, William 9. 1850 Lee County, VA. - Edward, David, Green, William Parsons, 1850 Montgomery County N.C. David Nelson, Claiborne. Why couldn't Neddy Pennington more easily have come from Group 10 as 7? Your comments please. Al Matthews/mmm
