This was posted to the Arkansas Family History Association mail list on Rootsweb and I thought it may be of value to those of you researching Cherokee ancestors. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Research Director Pennington Research Association www.penningtonresearch.org =========================================================== From: Dusty Collins [[email protected]] Subject: [email protected] Guess it didn't make it to the list, but I replied last night that I have a copy of the following and will be glad to do lookups (this is CHEROKEE records only): 1817 RESERVATION ROLL: A listing of those desiring a 640 tract in the east and permitted to reside there. 1817-1835 EMIGRATION ROLLS: Those who filed to emigrate to Arkansas country and, after 1828, to Oklahoma 1835 HENDERSON ROLL: A census of over 16,000 Cherokee residing in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina to be removed to Oklahoma under the treaty of New Echota (1835) 1848 MULLAY ROLL: A census of 1,517 Cherokees remaining in North Carolina after the removals of 1838. 1851 SILER ROLL: A listing of some 1700 Eastern Cherokees entitled to a per capita payment pusuant to an act of Congress of 1850 1851 OLD SETTLER ROLL: A listing of Cherokees still living in 1851 who were already residing in Oklahoma when the main body of Cherokes arrived in the winter of 1839. 1852 CHAPMAN ROLL: Prepared by Albert Chapman as a listing of those Cherokee actually receiving payment based on the SILER census. 1852 DRENNAN ROLL: The first census of the new arrivals to Oklahoma of 1839 (the "Trail of Tears" group) 1869 SWETLAND ROLL: Prepared by S. H. Swetland as a listing of those Cherokee and their descendants who were listed as remaining in North Carolina by MULLAY in 1848. 1883 HESTER ROLL: Compiled by Joseph E. Hester as a roll of Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in 1883. 1898-1914 DAWES ROLLS: Final roll for allotting the land a terminating the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. This roll turned out to be not as final as the govt. expected. Upon reorganization of the Cherokee Nation o Oklahoma in the 1970's the Dawes Roll became the only means of certifying membership. In other words - if your ancestor is not on the Dawes Roll - forget about enrolling!! While the Cherokee do allow this rule to be challenged in their tribal courts, there has never been a case of an exception made. 1908 CHURCHILL ROLL: List to certify members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Rejectees are also included. 1909 GUION-MILLER ROLL: All Eastern Cherokee, not Old Settlers, residing either east or west of the Mississipp. Ordered by Court of Claims as a result of a suit won by the Eastern Cherokee. 1924 BAKER ROLL: Supposed to be a final rollof the Eastern Cherokee. sherry [email protected] ==== AFHA Mailing List ==== Sign up today for our Winter 2000 lecture series! http://www.rootsweb.com/~arfha ============================== Free Web space. My father: Howard G.Pennington, son of Levi Jackson Pennington and Nancy E. Powers. My mother. Bessie B.Coffey, daughter of Eaphrom V. Coffey and Mamie Sneed. Has anyone ever done any research on this? I received this from the Arkansas Family History Association's mailing list ([email protected]). It is a very good site and can be easily searched. They have done an excellent job with it. I found a few Pennington names along with a couple of other family surnames I am researching. This was created in late 1999 by the Tennessee State Library and Archives. http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/pension.htm By the way, for those interested in researching in Arkansas, you may want to join the Arkansas Family History Association. Besides their mailing list, they have a very good web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arfha/ . Enjoy. Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >The name that I remember seeing in the county records most often was Capt. James Gee and Boyce Scott. Were they relatives?< According to "The Gee Family" by W. J. Fletcher, p. 21: "Captain James Gee [Charles 1] apparently the oldest son of Charles and Hannah Gee, ... married Boyce, the daughter of John Scott...."
Jemima Gee Morse Mrs. Morse, Thank you for the info in your posting Jan 7 in response to my query Jan. 6. My address is 16320 Sierra Ridge Way, Hacienda Heights, CA 91745. Would appreciate any material that you would be willing to send me. In the 18th century the Gee family lived in Prince George County, VA. near the Chappell, Jones and Lewis families, which are my ancestors. Never the less, all of the families are recorded in the Albemarle Parish of Surry County as the county lines and records were blurred in those days. I grew up in Petersburg, VA. and used to spend time with my father in Surry Courthouse. The name that I remember seeing in the county records most often was Capt. James Gee and Boyce Scott. Were they relatives? My mother Carrie (Lewis) knew a member of the Gee family living near the Halifax Road in Dinwiddie County VA, but that was years ago and I am sorry to say I do not know them today. We could probably secure more information on the Gee family if I could reprint your information in the Pennington Pedigrees. May I have your permission to do so? Please advise by e-mail. Thank you. Best wishes. Al Matthews
Dear Listers... I've recently posted some updates on the PRA Group 7 page...there are a few new pictures that were generously contributed by Dennis Johnson concerning the Sarah Pennington line...some updates on some of the lineage pages, and some new census info. I have several people from the 1850 census listed under who I think they are descended from. I've put the unknown photos on their own page...the pages were taking too long to download. Please take a look and tell me if you think I need to make improvements or any comments. I really want to know...Please go to the Pennington Page link below!
