Just a note...there is an Anna Elizabeth Sack in my ancestors. She was from Heuchelheim, Hessen, Germany, or at least...that is where she died. Charlie
I think it's always been that way with the current census. It has to do with the right to privacy. Something that the Penningtons in my family hold very dear. Yes it's great when they make it available but . . . well some of it may have to do with the Nazi's of the 30's and their take overs of the ghettos and then the Communist when they would move into certain countries and their villages. The Nazi's could easily find information in the records and so forth. It's a viable concern. I don't think we should worry about it though regarding the census of 2000, this day and age of PC's and the super information era we are in, for right now the info is there. I myself think they ask too many personal questions on the census, perhaps if they quelled their questions to your name, your occupation, where you were born, then I don't think there would be a problem. What we have to do is to keep the communication lines open with our children and their children so that the information doesn't get lost. -----Original Message----- From: Audrey Annable Franklin [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 28, 2000 3:32 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PENNINGTON-L] Census 2000 It is against the law not to submit your information to the census bureau. I am researching John Pennington of Cecil Co. Md. he married Sarah J. Beade about 1716 they were my gggggrandparents my email is [email protected] thanks Steve
I actually was a census taker. If anyone hung up on me or refused to answer questions, I was to turn it over to a supervisor. They would then call upon the person in question and one thing they told them is they could be prosecuted for refusing to answer the census. Lula Hankins Hunter, Hawaii, has recently completed a new transcript of the Archibald Thompson Diary, which is posted at Doug Moore's web site http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald/ Found by Barbara Thompson Saltou in the early 1980s when she and her father visited Monroe County, Ky., the diary documents the life and times of many families in Virginia and Kentucky in the 1700-1800s. Lula's ancestral homeland is Tazewell Co., Va., and she has spent many years researching her and allied families in the New River Valley, including Montgomery Co., Va. She has deciphered many new names, dates, and events, as well as military, trade and travel entries from a new photocopy of the diary. Archibald wrote "Farewell to Sweet Ireland Wherein I Was Bred." However, we've been unable to find when the family emigrated or where they disembarked in America. The files are in text format and can be easily downloaded. As Elisabeth "Betsy" Pennington is my ggg-grandmother, I am pasting below some of the Pennington entries from the index to the diary. Hi Bobby: I went to visit my uncle Ezekiel ( Zeke )Pennington he is 85 years old he is the only son still living of Levi Jackson Pennington. There is also a sister Rosie she is the oldest of Levis children she is 94 years old and is living in Spiro Oklahoma. I had a wonderful visit with him and his wife my aunt Mary Alice. He told me that his father (Levi) died of cancer, he said that he had a large lump on his neck and back in those days he said that they called it a carbuncle. My father Howard G. Pennington (Levis son) died of the same thing. Do you have any Medical family history on any of the Pennington Ancestors as to what they died from? I also found out that Levi had two other children. Their first child was , William O. Pennington, born June 08.1901, died October 26, 1901. Second child was, Andrew J. Pennington, born March 14, 1903, died January 12,1904. When it comes to my Pennington talking about family things they clam up,but he sure was in a talkative moode, he said that when I come back to visit him he would tell me some stories about him and my father when they were little boys. I can hardly wait to go back to visit them. It's a three hour drive to Central Arizona and I live in Mesa Arizona, I go down ever chance I get, They are getting old and I want to spend as much time with them as I can.I will stop rambling on, I just wanted to share this with you and see if I could find out some medical history. Thank you . ~Mary
I had no idea such a law was passed or exists! Can someone verify this? As far as I know I have never been on a census, since leaving my parents home. Probably the writer of the ad was over-simplifying. You can check it out yourself: just type "thomas" at your browser address line to go to the Library of Congress' web site for current legislation. I had a quick look around there and didn't find anything like that. If it's true, the Census Bureau doesn't seem to know about it. Actually, I did find a very informative four-page pamphlet at: http://www.census.gov/prod/2/gen/cff/cff-9702.pdf Did you know you can get a copy of your own, or your ancestor's, census form before the 72-year time limit? Hi Mary, Yes I saw that. Levi Pennington III (b.1781) was the first born of Levi Pennington Jr (b.1758). He married Margaret "Peggy" Cowan (dau. of Henry Cowan) on 2 Apr 1805 in Rowan Co., NC (Ref: PP 23-1 pg 24). Levi Pennington III d.1813 at about age 32 in Orange Co., NC. In 1817, Levi III's "legal aged" siblings deeded land bought by Levi III in 1811 back to Margaret (Cowan) Pennington - see deed Orange Co., NC, at the website - "Benjamin Pennington and Others to Margaret Pennington." Margaret Pennington believed to have re-married on 4 May 1818 to Allmand Hall in Rowan Co., NC. Margaret and Levi III believed to have had at least two male children b.c. 1807-1809. A fellow letterpress museum operator sent me two sheets from Marion Marble Works, of Marion, Kansas, that were billings to Ola O. Pennington for some work done on a monument. One was dated 11/9/1911 and the second was dated Jan 10/ 1912. If these are of interest to anyone send your name and address off list and I will send them to you. Bob Pennington
