Mary, Of course our thoughts and prayers are with you and Don. Reach deep within yourself for that strength that I am positive is there. Gather your family and friends around you and draw from their love and support and fight this thing with all that you can. Remember that you and Don are not alone but you have a whole Pennington clan that are here to help you make through to the other side while victory resides. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, I know the power behind prayer and positive attitudes. To know that I have a large family out there praying for Don is where we will get our strength from through prayer. Again thank you. Mary
I just found out yesterday that my husband Don has cancer of the esophagus, Please remember him in your prayers. Thank you Mary.
Looks like we can lay this one to rest. I wrote the following to the Census Bureau: I've seen notices on several genealogy-related mailing lists to the effect that the 2000 census was never going to be released to the public, even after the normal 73-year waiting period. This was supposedly to encourage people to give information. This doesn't sound right to me, but that's also true of a lot of things coming out of Washington these days. I poked around "Thomas" at the Library of Congress looking for legislation, and the Census Bureau web site, but didn't find anything. Can you confirm this or verify that's it's just a rumor, as I suspect? Paul Pennington Augusta, Georgia and received the following response: - --------------------------------------------------------- Dear Paul, I haven't heard anything to confirm the rumors that you discuss, but I am certain that they are just rumors. The Census Bureau is not in charge of releasing individual records, and is not making any claims about never releasing these records as a way to encourage participation in 2000. As you may already know, the National Archives is in charge of releasing individual census records following the 72 year waiting period. I am certain that the Archives intends to continue making census records available (genealogists, after all, constitute one of the most significant of the Archives' client groups). As to why these rumors are out there, I can only guess. One theory is that since the data will be transferred to computers electronically (rather than through a film-based method used since 1960), people are worried about what format the data will take when they are released. I know that Congress recently considered discussing how the data will be released in the future; but these were discussions about "how" to release the data, not "whether" (and, as with most political discussions, no conclusions were reached). Rest assured, the rumors that you have heard are only rumors. Census records are such a popular and vital genealogical resource that anyone who seriously proposes never releasing them will not be heeded. -Dave History Staff

I found a Wells Pennington in NC that could have been the father of my Edward Pennington who was born about 1797 and who I found in 1820 and 1850 in the Watauga Cty, NC censuses. Does anyone know who Wells was? Audrey Annable Franklin
Dear Listers, I have been working on the web page again and have added some new features. The first thing that I've done is made sure that the site has 4 generationgs listed for each sibling. The first generation is on the main page and each sibling's page has a 3 other generations. This meant that some pages are a bit longer. I spent time especially on the descendants of Mary Pennington, Sarah Pennington, Edward Pennington, and Levi Pennington. I did some updated to Micajah, Jr. If someone out there has some good info on Joshua Pennington, son of Micajah, Jr., let me know, I have very little on his family. The next thing that I've added is a search engine. It is not perfect...but seems to work fairly well. If you have problems or comments, please let me know. I'll talk to you soon! Cal, Take a book at the Cornelius Roberts site, if you haven't already found it. Bob McManus thinks my ggg-grandmother. Elisabeth, may be a sister to Sarah who m. Archibald Roberts. I used this search engine, typed in "Rodden Thompson" and found the site, which looks to have excellent documentation for the Roberts, Penningtons, Thompsons, Gee and others in Monroe and Cumberland Co., Ky., and a lot of Montgomery and Russell Co., Va., families. www.google.com http://www.flash.net/~bharris5/Roberts.html Clan Thompson (especially Archibald and Skaggs' descendants) check out the land survey source information.

Hi Kyle: Looks like we may have a connection. I don't have any children listed for Howard and Lena (Snyder) Pennington. I'm interested in any information you may have on Howard's and Lena's Children. Also interested in the marriage of Nathan Pennington to Alisa Plannington (could this be Pennington). Any information you may have on this Pennington family will be greatly appreciated. Maybe we can share information. I have the following information. Nathaniel Jason Pennington was born March 18, 1865 in Tucker County, WV, and died Aug. 26, 1944 in Tucker County, WV. John Alan Pennington here I think there have been a lot of rumors flying around about the census, and like most rumors, they may contain some truth, but are probably more wrong. The census is a cooperative affair. The actual census is taken by ordinary citizens, as we all know. I have serious doubts there are more than a handful of arrests of people who refuse to answer the census, out of all those millions. Maybe some gangster or something. The Census Bureau is not in the police business. It has been a long-standing policy of the Census Bureau to protect the privacy of individuals for a period of 72 years. That's nothing new. This sort of confidentiality is necessary if we are to get people to answer questions about race, for example. Summary data of every sort are available as soon as the bureau is able to present them.

Hey Everybody, I'm looking for information on my biological father Sammie Pennington the first, I'm the third but I go by Jason, all I really know about him is that he died around '89-'90 and I'm having trouble pulling records on him because I can't produce a death certificate, and I can't get a death certificate on him because I have no idea where he died. I'd appreciate any information anybody may have on him or even a point in the right direction. Thanks, Jason
Hello Jason, do you have a social security number for him? Have you make application to the S S in Baltimore to get an original copy of his application for SocSec. You will have to pay for it but they have some good info on them. Artilla William Group 30
Every census is withheld for 70 years [the 1930 census becomes available this year], however, I slightly remember some commentary that this census would be permanently withheld. Sounds pretty far fetched and, quite frankly, stupid. To what advantage? "Raise the Bar!" Bear Henley -----Original Message----- From: Lisa Hibbs [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, January 31, 2000 8:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PENNINGTON-L] Census 2000 discussion You know thinking about this, are we sure that they have said "never". It has always been that the information is not opened to the whole public, it's like when we don't post a whole lot of info on our living Kinfolks. If I thought that the information was going out there to all the con artist in this world (and oh yes, folks they would be the first to take advantage of it) then I don't want to have anything to do with it. The fact is that in time they will release the info. They just can't release it right away. I don't think you can readily get your hands on the info from say 30 years ago. No matter how much this current group gripes and moans about privacy eventually we will all be gone from this world and that info will be open for the taking. You know on another list that I am on someone from England posted how they keep great records within their communities, but did you know that these records are only posted in their National records when that registered record of that community is turned into them. Guess what? They don't turn the record book in till it is filled. This lady finally found the information she was looking for by going straight to the records keeper of the community and the date of death for this person she was looking for was 1888. This info could not be found anywhere except in this man's house or office (whatever) in the book that he had taken over to finish filling up with the info of the community. Now, I'm not criticizing Britain, I think it's marvelous that they have not let the hurry up and rush me world catch up with this. My point is, Genealogy is not easy. We have to search all over and we have to be willing to talk to complete strangers sometimes not an easy thing to do in this day and age. And we must respect one anothers current privacy. ==== PENNINGTON Mailing List ==== Threaded archives can now be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/PENNINGTON-L/

Recently I posted a query on the list and gave tombstone inscriptions for John Bowlby Palmer and Margaret Pennington both buried in the Walnut Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Franklin Co., TN. Margaret is believed to have first married Isaac Rich who died in 1787 in Rowan Co., NC and is buried in Eaton Baptist Church Cem. in present-day Davie Co., NC. The tombstone inscriptions were taken from the Franklin Co., TN Cemetery Book published in 1984 by the Franklin Co. Historical Society. This morning my husband and I went to the Walnut Grove Cem. to photograph the tombstones and low and behold John Bowlby Palmer's stone very clearly had his age as 51 NOt 54. Therefore, since the stone states he died Oct. 1825 aged 51 years, he was born in 1774 NOT 1771. Please note this correction. Joy Q. Gallagher Winchester, Franklin Co., TN
Hi, cousins, Several people have mentioned that they have family traditions saying some Pennington ancestors were Cherokee or Chickasaw, or some other Native American tribe. This past weekend I was at the GENTECH 2000 conference, and bought a CD version of a large book that has all the names of people who were listed in the "Guion Miller Roll" -- a sort of specialized census of people who had applied for compensation from the government for Cherokee land, based on their stated Cherokee ancestry. It was compiled in 1906-1909. There are a number of Penningtons listed -- over a page worth, at one name per line. By the way, being listed doesn't mean they were necessarily Cherokee, but it does mean they claimed to be Cherokee for the purpose of getting the government money in the lawsuit brought against the government by three groups of Cherokee for money due as a result of the Treaty of New Echota (1835) The information included on the disc is the surname indexed, application number, sex, surname or married name, given name, maiden name, year and place of birth, current place of residence (at the time of the census), city and state and soundex code. The introduction on the disc gives information about the Guion Miller Roll itself and where to obtain microfilms of the original cards used to collect the data. They say these sometimes have extensive genealogical information, so could be worthwhile pursuing. The name of the CD is "Vital Information from the Guion Miller Roll: Eastern Cherokee Court of Claims" Heritage Disc #0878, transcribed by Billy Dubois Edgington & Carol Anne Buswell. It cost $29.95 +tax from Indian Scout Books. It is also available at http://www.heritagebooks.com for $30 + shipping & tax. The CD works on PC or Mac (or UNIX), since the material is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF), and it's fully searchable and printable. A few of the Penningtons listed under that name as the index are: Abel b. 1836 NC Ambrose (no date/place of birth given) Andrew J. b. 1844 NC Asa, b 1872 VA Asa, b. 1853, VA Calaway, b. 1874 VA Calton, b. 1859 VA Celia (m.
