    1. [PENNINGTON-L] QUERY: Welby Cambell Pennington, Clinton IL. & John Raymond Pennington, b. 4-3-1919
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. Posted with approval of author. Please post any replies to the list AND to author, Angela Jones (email is [email protected]). Thank you. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Research Director Pennington Research Association www.penningtonresearch.org =========================================================== Query: Welby Cambell Pennington believed to be from Clinton, ILL. m. Inez Margaret Cain believed to be born in South Dakota (Possibly a Black Foot Indian). They adopted my grandfather, who was born Raymond Arthur Hoggatt, in Huffton, SD on 4-3-1919 (per adoption records which I have). My grandfather's name was changed to John Raymond Pennington (aka Raymond Arthur Pennington, John Arthur Pennington) after his adoption. The Pennington settled in Paducah, KY (McCracken Co.) before the depression and Welby supposedly owned a Tin Shop in Paducah which went belly up during the depression. The Pennington's moved to California (specifically the Pasadena Area) and Welby supposedly died there in the late 1940's. My grandfather married Mary Catherine Elder on Sept. 23, 1933 in Paducah KY at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church. Mary Catherine Elder b. Aug. 16, 1916 in Paducah, KY. I have lots and lots of research on the Elder lines but very, very little on the Pennington lines. And even worse is I can't seem to find anything on them - as if this man didn't even exist. I do know that Welby and Inez had one other son named Jerry Francis Pennington that was born to them abt. 1921 in Paducah KY and he moved with them to CA. Jerry married and settled in CA. and one of my Uncles had contact with him up until his death which is believed to be in the late 1960's or early 1970's. If you can help in any way I would be most appreciative. The Pennington side of our family is such a mystery to all of us and my grandfather rarely spoke of any of them. We have traced his natural parents and brothers and sisters and have some info. of them if it would be helpful. God Bless any effort you make on my behalf. I pray for some answers. Thank you again! Angela Pennington Jones

    3. Virginia, Josiah Lamb had a station for the underground rr under his house in Galena. Doesn't it make you wonder, if he and his cousin????Zack Pennington were working together on this? From Josiah's house to Zack's might have been just one nights trip? Lots of things to speculate about, just wish we could find some PROOF!!! Thanks for the info. 3. PENNINGTON RESEARCHERS I received the following e-mail request from Michael Gildersleve in England. If any of you can help him in his search, I think he would appreciate it. The messages we exchanged are reproduced below. They pretty well explain the situation. I will be posting this on both PRA-L and PENNINGTON-L mailing lists, once you see it please delete the other, they will be duplicates. Thank you for any help you are able to give. Any ideas to further publicize his quest have his approval, per his last message. Thank you, James D. Pennington Asst. Director, PRA Research Committee Hopkins Switch, Kansas, USA ---------2/12/2000, From Michael Gildersleve to Jim Pennington-------- Dear Mr. Pennington Is it possible that you might be able to help me or point me in the right direction? I am trying to research one of my ancestors whose name was Fred Pennington.Apart from this name all I know is that the gentleman was stationed in England during World War Two.He was here in 1943 for sure and stayed at Okeover Hall in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. I know it is not much to go on but I guess it is possible that he or some member of his family is interested in the PRA. How would I go about posting a message which might be noticed by Fred or one of his other descendants? I would really appreciate a few moments of your valuable time to help me in my optimistic quest. It is so important to me. Thank you. Michael Gildersleve 12 Stambers Close Woodsetts Worksop Notts S81 8RX England 01909 567147 -------------2/14/2000, From Jim Pennington to Michael Gildersleve------------------ Dear Mr. Gildersleve, Probably your best chance to make a connection through Genealogy would be for you to re-post your message on the "Pennington List at RootsWeb, <[email protected]>. If you give your permission, I would be glad to also post your message on the PRA's members only Board. Another way to receive more exposure might be if you wrote a letter to the Editor of "Pennington Pedigrees" asking him to publish your request in the magazine. You can find more information at the PRA website < http://www.penningtonreasearch.org> which you may have already brought up. Good luck in your search, let me know if you want it posted on the PRA-L Board. Sincerely, James D. Pennington Asst. Director, PRA Research Committee Hopkins Switch, Kansas, USA -------------2/17/2000, from Michael Gildersleve to Jim Pennington---------------- Dear Mr. Pennington Thank you for you prompt response to my enquiry.I would be more than willing for you to post my details anywhere you think might be accessed by the Fred I am looking for or by any of his family. Fred himself must be well into his seventies but any children or grandchildren who know that their father or grandfather was in the US forces might be tempted to make contact. I am sure it would be interesting to look at the family connection. It is a pity that I have so little to go on but great oaks do grow from the smallest acorns.I know for certain that one location where he was posted was Okeover Hall near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. I have not been able to learn any more about the American activities in that area in 1943; it could have been almost anything but it remains Top Secret to me.Perhaps your help will open a new chapter in my book of life. Thank you for doing what you can.I am also following up your suggestion of contacting the Editor of Pennington Pedigrees. I don't think I can put too many irons in the fire.I just need to get lucky. Please accept my best wishes. Michael Gildersleve

So far PRA Group 7 is the only link I have found to the Penningtons in Clay Co. Kentucky. I believe the following information is accurate based of my fathers memory. Levi Pennington of Clay Co. Ky. had at least one son named William. William married Polly Goforth and lived in Clay Co. They had ten children one of which was Levi b.1891. Levi married Julia Ann Ferguson b.1890 of Clay Co. in 1912 and they moved to Boone Co. Ky. Levi and Julia were my grandparents. I have some on the information on the Ferguson , Pennington and Goforth families in the Sextons Creek / Clay Co Ky area. Is there a link to your research or can you help me with a link to the Clay Co. Penningtons . Jim Pennington Rocklin, Ca. >From Walton,Ky. Boone Co.

    3. I recently found what I believe is a marriage certificate from Story County Iowa for my great great grandmother, Jane Pennington, born c. May 15, 1829, 30 or so in Ohio. Jane was listed as 18 years old and was living in the household of Mary Claney and Elijah Platt in Randolph county, Indiana at the time of the 1850 census. Mary Claney died about 1853 and Jane then married Elijah and survived him to marry three more times, the last to a Benjamin Hollingsworth. In the Hollingsworth certificate, her parents are listed as James Pennington and Charity Williams, both of Ohio. She died in 1907 and is buried in Iowa. Anyone out there have any information regarding James/Charity?

    3. I wish I knew the answer to that but I do not. They would have had to be related back a generation or so, I would think. That is IF they are related. 3. Thomas A. Love and wife, Catherine Johnson, had a son named James Anderson Love who married Emmaline Pennington. Her death certificate states her father was named Isaac Pennington. The Pennington I have been looking for high and low is Edward married to Lucinda. There daughter, Irina/Arrena, married Wesley Love who was a sibling of James Anderson Love. Also Edward named a son, Isaac. Thus I believe it more than possible that Isaac Pennington was closely related to Edward Pennington. Does anyone have an Isaac born about 1800? Edward was in Ashe Cty in the 1820 census as well as in 1850.
