    1. [PENNINGTON-L] National Archives and Records Administration's e-mail reference and information service

    3. I just found this on another list and checked it out. It is a great link to a page on RootsWeb that allows you to quickly order forms from the National Archives and Records Administration's e-mail reference and information service (NARA). Go to the page below (on RootsWeb) and order your forms. I ordered Form 80 (for Military service and pension records prior to WWI). Enjoy! Gene Pennington (Group 7) Research Director Pennington Research Association www.penningtonresearch.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NARA forms ----> http://www.rootsweb.com/~mscivilw/help/helpform.htm They sent me back a reply message right away. Their reply message says: "Welcome to the National Archives and Records Administration's e-mail reference and information service, [email protected] ! Operated by the staff of the Customer Services Division, "inquire" is intended to provide timely responses to reference requests, or at least get the process started quickly by referring your message to the appropriate office or person. We also answer general inquiries about the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). If you have not visited NARA's web page, we recommend that you do because there is much useful information about the agency and its records holdings and services. The URL is: http://www.nara.gov . This message is automatically generated whenever one of the following words appears in the text of an incoming message: form, forms, and Form. We have set up our e-mail system in this way because we have found that these words appear frequently in requests for the specific genealogy reference forms we use at NARA. (AHA!) The numbers and subjects of these forms are as follows: Form 80 (Military service and pension records prior to World War I, including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Mexican War, Civil War, and the Spanish-American War) Form 81 (Passenger Arrival Records) Form 82 (Copies of Census Records -- requiring your knowledge of the publication, roll, and page number, as we do not conduct searches of Census Records for you) Form 83 (Eastern Cherokee Applications) Form 84 (Land Entry Papers -- for Federal lands only), and Form 180 (Military Service Records, World War I and later -- the form can also be downloaded directly from the following internet location: http://www.nara.gov/regional/mpr.html) If you indicated in your original message the FORM NUMBER, the QUANTITY needed, and YOUR POSTAL MAILING ADDRESS, you have given us the information we need to fill your order. However, if you did not include this information in your original message, please re-send your message with this information. While we try to fill orders within 10 days, sometimes the number of inquiries is too great to do so. We therefore appreciate your patience very much. If your inquiry concerns a different subject or one which requires a more substantive reply, it will be evaluated by an archivist (a real person, honest!) and either answered by that person directly, or referred to the proper reference or other office. Please do not expect immediate responses from other offices as it takes more time to make a substantive reply -- usually 2 to 3 weeks. As with any electronic system, problems/bugs sometime occur. If this should happen to you or you want to register a comment, complaint, or congratulations for a job well-done, please send your e-mail to: [email protected] . >From Tom, Charlene, Cynthia, Faye and Bob, thanks for reading this entire message (and don't forget the NARA web page!). >>> "[email protected]" 02/08/00 12:40 >>>

    3. Dear Jackie, I don't have a whole lot on your family...but you are a "cousin" of mine. Harvey Pennington is the son of Levi Pennington, grandson of Levi Pennington, and great-grandson of Micajah Pennington. Therefore, you are in Group 7 as I am. I am descended from Harvey's younger sister Elizabeth, who is my gggreat-grandmother. Please take a look at the Group 7 page that I have set up. I think that you will find it interesting...and then email me privately and we can "converse" on the family! And I believe it is Monroe Co., according to most of the research done on this family it is mainly around Tompkinsville, Ky in Monroe Co. that they are from. This is most intriguing. 2. I have created a Web Page for our family (Group 30, I think) at the following address: http://www.users.uswest.net/~rcpennington This is my first attempt at creating a Web page so I'm learning. Would appreciate any feedback on how I did (good, back or otherwise). If anyone in Group 30 have any suggestions on what to add, just let me know. I have some pictures to put there soon, the list of Pennington's I found on the Guion Miller Cherokee Rolls (and several of the scanned applications) and some other odds and ends. I stopped the FTM report at my G-Grandad, George M. Pennington, b. 6/22/1866 as I did not want to add any names still living online (anyone have any comments on this?).
