My mother had an older sister who in October 1918, at the age of 22, answered a call from the government for civilian nurses. She left home by train, at her own expense, and reported to the military hospital at Ft. Riley, Kansas, where she immediately commenced nursing the sick soldiers. Eleven days after her arrival there she was dead, a victim of one of the deadliest world-wide epidemics that has ever occured. Charles Johnson chasj@juno.com
