    3. Mike, My mother still grows ground cherries. I remember my greatgrandfather grew tons of them. I'd go out in his couple acre garden and pick them off the vine and eat them. I was told they are from the tomato family. They are a yellowish green when ripe and taste something like a tomato. My understanding is they are called ground cherries because they look like cherries and are grown not to high off the ground.
