    3. Mark, The information for Huff's in Montgomery County does seem to include anything more recent that 1810. Also, I didn't find anything in the 1880 Soundex. Here is what was listed for Montgomery Co.: "Montgomery Co., formed 1784 from Philadelphia, has county seat at Norristown. 1790 Census Mary Hufty 1-1-1-0-2 Charles Haff 1-1-0 Andrew Huff 1-3-3 Joseph Hough 1-1-2 1800 Census. Abington Twp., David Huffty, 00010-00000 Chittenham Twp., John Huff, no persons Limerick Twp., Charles Hoff, 00101-00100 Montgomery Twp., Silas Hough, 10010-00110 Frederick Twp., Michael Hoff, 11100-10100 Perkimen Twp., Charles Hoff, 00101-00100 Upper Dublin Twp., Jacob Houfe, 01010-70010 Springfield Twp., Henry Hoaf, 10010-00100 1810 Census: Ptsgervell, Eleanor Huff 00000-00010 Montgomery, Dr. Silas Hough 11010-01010" > Sharon, could you look up an Aaron Hoff, of Limerick (and possibly >Frederick and Douglass) Twps., in Montgomery Co., PA? He was the son of >Daniel Hoff and Elizabeth Freeby (Elizabeth was also married to John Smith), >and was born on 17 Feb 1822. Daniel Hoff and Elizabeth apparently had >another son, Ludwig (or Lewis), who was born in 1819. Could you see if this >family is mentioned in any of your books? > Thanks. > >Mark A. Connelly >MAC3387@aol.com > >^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Diane, Thank you very much for all the information on the Dugan and Jones! Diane, you mentioned Alsace Twp. and Berks Co. PA, so I looked at the material there. The Huff (Hoff) there, at least in the late 1700's appear to be primarily of German heritage, a few with Dutch. Here is what I found: "Berks County: Berks County formed 1752 from Bucks, Chester, Lancaster and Philadelphia counties, has county seat at Reading. 1743-46. Michel Hof, Jr. and Leonard Hof were members of Tulpehocken Lutheran Church. Some of this congregation had settled at Tulpehocken in 1728 from Schoharie, NY, where they had settled in 1713 from Germany. 1756. John Jacob Hoff (1739-1825) son of Peter Hoff, came from Holland in the ship "Polly". He settled at Reading, Berks Co., where in 1767 he married Anna Barbara Helier (1737-1803). They had John (1773-1818) who in 1795 md Catherine Bright. 1757. John Frederick Huff (1734-1816) son of Paulus and Maria Elizabeth Huff, in 1762 md Susanna Keim (1739-1809). They had six sons and eight daughters, of whom three sons are known: This family lived in Herford Twp. -Frederick Huff (1777-1854) md Barbara Fink -George Huff (1779-1845) md Arina Moll -Henry Huff (1781-1799) -(Possibly) Susanna Huff who md Abraham Mensch of Herford Twp. 1790 Census. Herford Twp., John Huff, 1-1-1 Herford Twp., Frederick Huff, 1-3-2 (Frederick Huff, son of John Frederick Huff, and Barbara Fink had four sons and three daughters. Sons were John, Reuben, Jonas, and Henry.) Alsace Twp., Michael Hoff, 1-1-1 Reading Borough, Jacob Hoff 3-1-3" If any of this looks promising, then I can give you the rest (through 1810) which includes some of the children of the above. Here is a bit more on the John Frederick Huff (1734-1816) mentioned above: "John Frederick von Hoof, b. 8 Jul 1734 in Berlin, migrated to Herford Township, Berks Co., PA before 1800 and settled with his wife Susanne Keim at a place later called "Huff's Church". Their children were Frederick, George, Henry, Susanna, and others not know. Their son George Hoof md Anna Kull, and this couple had a George Hoof, Jr. who changed the spelling of his name to Huff about 1840. This Huff family lived in western PA, where their son, George Franklin Huff, became a US Congressman about 1900 and developed legislation which resulted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines." >Well, Sharon > >Thank you for the interesting info about the name HUFF! And your offer >to look for any connection. > >I have a Mary KERST(GERST/KARST) variably spelled, that married a HUFF >and, in her brother Franz KERST's will of 1/1765; proved 10/1765, he >bequeaths her an equal share of his properties in Exeter and Alsace and >refers to her as my sister 'Mary HUFF of Maidencreek'. There is no >first name for her husband. I have scouted around in that area of >Berks Co and have not found much on HUFFs. Maybe you have something in >your book?!! The KERSTs were German, so I just assumed that HUFF was >German too! >As far as DUGAN and JONES, I have a little more information: >...............snip >Diana at audiana@webtv.net Hope some of this helps, Sharon
