Hello, I have a reference to a marriage of Johann Wilhelm BOETKER to Anna Veronica SORBER, 7 Dec 1760 in the Germantown Reformed Church, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Does anyone have any further information on either of these two individuals? I think that Anna Veronica may be the Verena SURBER (born ca 1730) listed as being "qualified as usual" on 29 May 1735 with her brother Henry and father Henry. The mother Hannah/Kleinanna was listed as a passenger, but no further mention of her has ever been found after arrival. They arrived in Philadelphia on 8 May 1735 aboard the ship Mercury. They were from Steinmaur, Dielsdorf District, Canton Zu"rich, Switzerland. Father Henry died in old Frederick County (the area that is now Shenandoah County), Virginia in 1754. Son Henry's children were all born in Germantown, but he and family moved to Virginia by about 1752. Verena/Anna Veronica could have: 1. gone back to Germantown to marry, 2. stayed in Germantown when her family left -- she was 22 in 1752 (but this was unlikely for a single young female), or 3. somehow have been placed when young with another family under guardianship after her mother died probably soon after arriving. Was there much travel *back and forth* between the German areas of Pennsylvania and Virginia by persons other than ministers? My Swiss German lines seem to have left Pennsylvania en masse for the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia by the 1750s. In the earliest generations, my Swiss Germans tended to marry only other Swiss Germans.
