    1. [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Re: all the same [PA Dutch Dialect

    3. Julie asked: >I live near conservative Amish in MO. Would they speak the same dialect >as other Amish/Mennonite and/or is PA Dutch a different language? The Amish and many Mennonites as well as other "church" dutch all speak a German dialect known as PA Dutch. However, there are regional differences in the language from place to place. Here in Pennsylvania for instance there are some differences in the dialect from one county to another. Likewise some differences in the language here in Lancaster county between the Amish on one hand, the Mennonites on the other, and other dialect speakers on yet another. I use the phrase "Church" dutch to refer to those PA Dutch who do not wear distinctively plain dress but attend other church denominations e.g. Lutheran, Reformed, the more liberal members of the Church of the Brethren etc. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
