This gathering will be held in the Slate Belt/ Lehigh Valley in Pen Argyl Pa thus it's "American" all "Heinz 57" varieties are welcome. As a friend of mine in Slatington says: It took the Dutch to find the Slate [ it was in their fields unwanted ! ] It took the Welsh to open the quarries [ they rounded up the money] And it took the "Hunks" to show them how to quarry. [ Well... ] COME ONE, COME ALL 10TH GATHERING OF CORNISH COUSINS July 28 29 30 31 August 1 1999 PENNSYLVANIA - CORNWALL ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES THE DATES OF THE FIRST GATHERING ON THE EAST COAST OF THE CORNISH AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY THE 10TH GATHERING WILL BE HELD IN THE SLATE BELT REGION OF PENNSYLVANIA. OUR CORNISH ANCESTORS CAME TO THIS REGION TO WORK IN THE SLATE QUARRIES. JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE REGION ARE THE COAL FIELDS THAT ALSO BROUGHT WORKERS FROM ENGLAND AND TO THE EAST IS NEW JERSEY, HOME OF THE ZINC MINES. TOURS WILL BE PLANNED TO COVER THESE REGIONS DURING YOUR STAY IN THE AREA. WE ALSO HOPE TO OFFER A TOUR AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE GATHERING TO ELLIS ISLAND SO THOSE INTERESTED CAN VISIT WHERE MANY ARRIVED IN THIS NEW COUNTRY. THE SLATE BELT IS SITUATED JUST 90mi FROM NEW YORK CITY ,70mi FROM PHILADELPHIA, AND 60mi FROM AMISH COUNTRY. THIS IS AN IDEAL AREA TO PLAN AN EXTENDED VACATION WHILE INCLUDING THE GATHERING IN YOUR PLANS.
