Abraham Fox rec'd 200 acres in Kentucky for his service with the Cumberland Rangers of PA. By his military papers he was once a resident of Greenwood Township. I researched Comberland Co tax lists for 1771-1775 (file #0021088) Cumberland tax lists for 1776, 1779-1780 (film #0021089) Cumberland Land and Prop. in Grantor-Grantee Indexes 1750-1950 (Files #0021039 and 0021039) Probate records of 1750-1937 (Film #0021075). No Abraham Fox, however, considerable confusion has been noted in the name which has been at times written or interpreted as Fuchs (the German spelling), Foos, Fose, Foas, Foss, and Ford. Part of the confusion was the illiteracy of the person giving their name and the inability of the recorder to correctly spell or legibly write what they believed they heard. Even when written correctly the handwriting of the ear has led to present day transcription errors. The Pennsylvania, Cumberland County tax lists include such names as Fouts, Foos, Fore, Folk, Fopes, Fose, Foas, Floas, Fin, Frey and Fry, any of which could have been Fox, although some of the foregoing are more likely than others. I might mention that the name Fox has even been read as Ford due to the handwriting style. Abraham Fox appeared in the KY Tax roll in 1799. Always near him was John Fox who by his death record was born in Philadelphia. John Fox was appointed caretaker of Abraham before his death. THe men are believed to be closely related, either father and son or brothers. Descendents in Kentucky claim two brothers by the name Fox came to the area of present day Russell County. The brothers spoke only German. One brother stayed, the other moved west. I found nothing to support the claim or German ancestry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Shirley Murray
