    2. At a meeting of the Bertolets held in their 1847 Meeting House on Colonial Road, Frederick, Montgomery County, Penna the following was presented about the original Frey: It is from Jean’s son ABRAHAM that our branch of Bertolets has it’s roots. Abraham was born in Germany in 1712, came to the New World as a child of 14 . He died in 1766 after raising six children. His wife was Esther DeTurk. They had purchased 138 acres of land from another relative and another Esther DeTurk. Their fourth son of Daniel was SAMUEL BERTOLET. He was born in Oley, Pennsylvania, in 1741. Daniel probably is the more interesting of the lot. He lived on his father’s farm until 1770, when upon the death of Jacob Frey, husband of Susanna Bertolet, his widow called Samuel to assist her in operating her farm in Frederick. He did so. married Susanna’s daughter, Esther Frey, his own first cousin ! Later he would marry her sister Elizabeth. Together they all built a house. One gable has the inscription J.F.-1770, and over the front window is the inscription S.B. 1771. The house is known as the Bertolet - Frey Homestead. In this cemetery you will find the memorial to Henry Frey: IN MEMORIAM HEINRICH FREY AND HIS WIFE ANNA CATHERINE NEE LEVERING PIONEER HUGUENOTS EMIGRATED TO NEW YORK 1675, AGE 22 YRS. ARRIVED IN PHILA 1680 MADE TREATY WITH INDIANS 1681 NAMED PLACE RISING SUN MARRIED IN GERMANTOWN APRIL 26, 1692 IN MENNONITE LOG MEETING HOUSE 1692 BOUGHT 100 ACRES. AT ROXBURY 1712 BOUGHT 200 ACRES TOWAMENCIN CREEK 1717 BOUGHT 650 ACRES BY WARRANT IN FALCKNER SCHWAMP, 200 ACRES FOR SON JACOB. 200 ACRES FOR SON WILLIAM 250 ACRES TO ANDREW FREY. HE SOLD IT 1735 DIED, WITH SON JACOB, 1734, AGED 81. HIS ESTATE, ADJUDICATED 1835 FREYS ESTABLISHED THIS CEMETERY, 1725 This Henry Frey deserves a few words . He is reported to have been the first French-Swiss-German to come to America in 1675. before William Penn who did not come to America until 1683 . First Frey came to New York then to Philadelphia.Henery, with his friend, started a woodworking shop on 4th Street. The Rising Sun Section of the City got it’s name from the time of day that Frey met with his Indian friends and made his treaty with them. He moved to Roxboro next and then bought land in TOWAMENCIN. The story goes that he and his two sons packed their knapsacks and walked to his new lands. There they built a house in the land that they cleared. This still wasn’t enough. He bought six hundred acres from the Frankfort Company in the area they called FALCKNER SCHWAMP. The Frankfort Company had acquired 22,000 acres from William Penn’s agent, Daniel Pastorius. Pastorius had married Henry and Anna Frey in 1692. This land he divided between his sons. One section, part of Jacobs’ parcel he reserved as a cemetery. Evidently Hunsicker summoned Oberholtzer all the way from the Swamp congregation to attend the opening services of Bertolets'. It appears, therefore, that the erection of Bertolets' meeting house was a project of the group which later formed Oberholtzer's Conference. D. K. Cassel names seven people who were received into the fellow ship of the Mennonite Church at Bertolets' in the autumn of 1847. Abraham Hunsicker preached at Bertolets' in that year, and was then succeeded Moses H. Gottshall, pastor of Gottshalls' congregation at Schwenksville. Bertolets' congregation was probably never in the Franconia Conference. The most numerous surnames found on the tombstones of the old Bertolets' burying ground are given by Bean as Bertolet, Bertolette, Bliem, De Nice, Dotterer, Frey, Gottschalk, Grobb, Hummel, Hunsberger, Nyce, Shoemaker, Smoll, Weidman, and Zoller. A colored man named Caesar is reported buried there, but he has no marker. There are many unmarked graves at Bertolets'.

    3. Thanks. These people do not appear to be any relation to my Frey line.
