    2. HI I am new to this list ! I am searching for my gggrandfather James GRAY who was born in Amsterdam HOLLAND in/ abt. 1803. I have some documentation from census records that he was born in Holklkand and on his son's death record it states that he was born in Amsterdam ! I have been searching James GRAY's birth date for almost 2 years now and not a whole lot closer then I was when I started ! He was in Union Twp. Lebanon Co . by 1843 when his son, my gggrandfather Alexander GRAY was born. I also have a listing of James where he married Magdalene EDWARDS on March 17, 1839. Therefoe I figure that he had to be here by the mid 1830? They ended up in Ohio in a few years, according to census records ! Where do I go from here finding his birth record ??? My BRICK WALL !!! LOL ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED ! Thank you in advance for your time ! Sandra GRAY Page

    3. My guess is that Holklkand = Holland, and Amsterdam = Amsterdam. Therefore, he was probably born in Amsterdam, Holland. Make sense? 3. Reply to Sandra Gray: Your "brick wall" is the fact that your James GRAY if he was born in Holland would not have an English Given and Surname. There is no JAMES in either Dutch or German given names. Might be Johannes. Also there is no surname of of GRAY in either of those countries. A possibility might be GRAU which when translated means GRAY (a color). You are looking "Where do I go from here to find his birth record." Whose birth record are you trying to find? If "James Gray" (which was not his Holland name) was born in 1803, you first have to establish what the correct Dutch name his was. Then the Holklkand most likely was Holland. The dialect they used, plus the fact that "James" could talk no English in Dutch sounded lilke that. Your first order of research will be to find just what his Dutch name was when he left Holland. Good Luck.
