    1. [PADutch] frey-bertolet
    2. At a meeting of the Bertolets held in their 1847 Meeting House on Colonial Road, Frederick, Montgomery County, Penna the following was presented about the original Frey: It is from Jean’s son ABRAHAM that our branch of Bertolets has it’s roots. Abraham was born in Germany in 1712, came to the New World as a child of 14 . He died in 1766 after raising six children. His wife was Esther DeTurk. They had purchased 138 acres of land from another relative and another Esther DeTurk. Their fourth son of Daniel was SAMUEL BERTOLET. He was born in Oley, Pennsylvania, in 1741. Daniel probably is the more interesting of the lot. He lived on his father’s farm until 1770, when upon the death of Jacob Frey, husband of Susanna Bertolet, his widow called Samuel to assist her in operating her farm in Frederick. He did so. married Susanna’s daughter, Esther Frey, his own first cousin ! Later he would marry her sister Elizabeth. Together they all built a house. One gable has the inscription J.F.-1770, and over the front window is the inscription S.B. 1771. The house is known as the Bertolet - Frey Homestead. In this cemetery you will find the memorial to Henry Frey: IN MEMORIAM HEINRICH FREY AND HIS WIFE ANNA CATHERINE NEE LEVERING PIONEER HUGUENOTS EMIGRATED TO NEW YORK 1675, AGE 22 YRS. ARRIVED IN PHILA 1680 MADE TREATY WITH INDIANS 1681 NAMED PLACE RISING SUN MARRIED IN GERMANTOWN APRIL 26, 1692 IN MENNONITE LOG MEETING HOUSE 1692 BOUGHT 100 ACRES. AT ROXBURY 1712 BOUGHT 200 ACRES TOWAMENCIN CREEK 1717 BOUGHT 650 ACRES BY WARRANT IN FALCKNER SCHWAMP, 200 ACRES FOR SON JACOB. 200 ACRES FOR SON WILLIAM 250 ACRES TO ANDREW FREY. HE SOLD IT 1735 DIED, WITH SON JACOB, 1734, AGED 81. HIS ESTATE, ADJUDICATED 1835 FREYS ESTABLISHED THIS CEMETERY, 1725 This Henry Frey deserves a few words . He is reported to have been the first French-Swiss-German to come to America in 1675. before William Penn who did not come to America until 1683 . First Frey came to New York then to Philadelphia.Henery, with his friend, started a woodworking shop on 4th Street. The Rising Sun Section of the City got it’s name from the time of day that Frey met with his Indian friends and made his treaty with them. He moved to Roxboro next and then bought land in TOWAMENCIN. The story goes that he and his two sons packed their knapsacks and walked to his new lands. There they built a house in the land that they cleared. This still wasn’t enough. He bought six hundred acres from the Frankfort Company in the area they called FALCKNER SCHWAMP. The Frankfort Company had acquired 22,000 acres from William Penn’s agent, Daniel Pastorius. Pastorius had married Henry and Anna Frey in 1692. This land he divided between his sons. One section, part of Jacobs’ parcel he reserved as a cemetery. Evidently Hunsicker summoned Oberholtzer all the way from the Swamp congregation to attend the opening services of Bertolets'. It appears, therefore, that the erection of Bertolets' meeting house was a project of the group which later formed Oberholtzer's Conference. D. K. Cassel names seven people who were received into the fellow ship of the Mennonite Church at Bertolets' in the autumn of 1847. Abraham Hunsicker preached at Bertolets' in that year, and was then succeeded Moses H. Gottshall, pastor of Gottshalls' congregation at Schwenksville. Bertolets' congregation was probably never in the Franconia Conference. The most numerous surnames found on the tombstones of the old Bertolets' burying ground are given by Bean as Bertolet, Bertolette, Bliem, De Nice, Dotterer, Frey, Gottschalk, Grobb, Hummel, Hunsberger, Nyce, Shoemaker, Smoll, Weidman, and Zoller. A colored man named Caesar is reported buried there, but he has no marker. There are many unmarked graves at Bertolets'.

    3. Hi Hazel and all - This discussion has now mentioned two of my very far back names, so here goes: I have Anna Margaretha ENSMINGER m John WOLFESBERGER - no dates but both probably b ca 1700 - are these in your data? And then their daughter Catherine WOLFESBERGER m Jacob FREY - again no dates, perhaps 1730s or so? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but in this area, I am. Grateful for any enlightenment you can supply. 2. Dear Joan I am one of those who joined yesterday via the Rootsweb connection. Anyway are you trying to trace back the Wismers IN Pa and find out what their life was like OR trace back to Switzerland? There is a a hstorical center in that neck of the woods that focuses on Mennonite genealogy. I am sure the director (Joel Alderfer)would be able to help you- I can get you their address later this afternoon. Its too early to remember the name of it BUt I could give you excellant directions !! smile.Just to save you some confusion IF you dont know much about that area but Bucks and Montgomery Counties border each other -. also there is a magazine called Family Mennontie History that focuses on genealogy. Its put out by Lois and ??? forget HIS name Mast in the Lancaster Co. Pa area. If I remember they mention the Wismers also. Ok enough for now - have to get to work. By the way I am desperately (sort of) trying to find out info on my original (the one who never made it to America) ??? ? Horst married to Barabara Horst. I have HER info but there is zilch on him. Its like he appeared out of nowhere married her -produced 3 children and dropped out of sight. Any Horst cousins etc that I have been in touch with have had the same problem.. SOOO if you have any ideas or info you could help us out a lot!! Also I have lived in Pa for most of my life where most Pa Dutrch lived i.e. Lancaster-Reading-Johnstown=Franconia etc. So anyone wanting info on any of those areas or who wants to get in touch with someone - I could maybe help out Shirley

    2. I don't have any information on your Moomeys, but there is a terrific website on the surname "Mumma" -- with many spelling variations -- at www.mumma.org. You might check its extensive database for clues. Good Luck! Elizabeth Strickler eastrick@aol.com

    3. Jack- "Emigrants, Refugees, and Prisoners, Volume III," by Richard Warren Davis, page 92, identifies a Peter YORDY as the father of Jacob YORDY. Davis also indicates: - Peter's wife was Magdalena Stauffer. - Jacob married Anna (Annali) Gingrich on April 16, 1768 Davis also indicates a Christian YORDY married Anna's sister Barbara (no date given), and that Christian was born about 1740. Although Davis doesn't indicate Christian is the brother of Jacob, I think it is probable that he is. I have seen Jacob and Christian's last name also spelled JORDE and/or JORDY. Davis doesn't refer to a Henry; however, the portion of the book that I referenced focused on the GINGRICH family. Other portions of the book may have addressed the YORTE/YORDY line. The time frame looks good and the location was definitely Lancaster County. Please let me know if you think this is a match so that I can update my records. thanks...Don ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mapapool@aol.com> To: <PENNA-DUTCH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 12:27 PM Subject: [PADutch] Yorty Family of Lancaster County, PA > Seeking info on Henry Yorty, born ca.1742, Lancaster Co. 2. I am new to the list. First let me apologize to Monteleblanc. I was trying to send a message to the mailing list and sent it to this person instead. I am very sorry for the error. I will be more careful. Again I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused. I am looking for information on the following Surnames. MOOMEY, George born between 1782 and 1792 we believe in Lancaster County. The names of his parents are unknown. He married Barbary Ellen. We have been told that Ellen was maybe a middle name and that her last name might have been Dido/Diddo/Dito./Ditto. This is not confirmed. My father said that the Moomey's were member of the Pennsylvania Dutch. I have found one web site on the PA Dutch but did not find the Surname. Moomey has been spelled different ways. In the will of George Moomey the name was spelled Mummey/Mumi and Mummie or Mummi. My brother and I are writing a book on the Moomey family and making a photo album to give to our Mom on her 89th Birthday. We were going to give it to her next year, but because of heart trouble and the beginning of Alzhemiers, we are going to give it to her this year. I would greatly appreciate any help. 1. [PADutch] Snow
    2. Margaret
    3. I am new to the list and am searching for Snow's. There is a John Snow who came to U.S. in 1753 at Philadelphia. A John Snow in Dauphin Co in 1790, and a Nicholas Snow 1790 in Huntingdon Co. Was the surname Schnee/Snee changed to Snow? I would appreciate any help along these lines. Johannes Christian Snee arrived in U.S in 1751 and his son John jr is listed as Schnee. Johannes name on the passenger list was Hans Schneberger. That is a lot for this old mind to manage. lol If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you. Thanks so very much. Margaret
