    1. Re: [PADutch] MYERS
    2. Al and Margaret, I'm not positive how my family spelled Myers. This is the way my dads name was and several others in the family. Kelsall is ( my family) from England. He immg in 1905. That was an easy one. I don't know how long Myers was in this country, nor if they came from Germany. ( My belief and that of my family is that they did.) But, the name may be Myers in the USA for many years, I have no clues as to when. I am hoping someone will recognize her name NORMA MYERS and be able to tell me a great deal more about HER family. I'm sure you helped out many people that didn't know there was more than one spelling. Thanks Doris

    3. Have you tried looking for Jacob LAGER? That's German for the word camp. MANY Pennsylvanians had their German names converted to English by English census takers. My SCHNEIDER went to SNYDER, my WERI went to WEARY, etc. ZIMMERMAN went to CARPENTER. 2. Melinda Strong
    3. I am another Newbie to this list. I thought I'd start with a question, as well as listing my lines: My lines are as follows Helfer CRAMER b 1753 in York, PA m Henrietta Sophia NEUDIG b 1761 Montgomery, PA. Their son, John (Johannes) CRAMER married Catharina SCHLOTT in York County in 1816. She was the daughter of Adam SCHLOTT b 1761 in Hesse Cassel and Anna Maria Catharina HOLDER b 1767 in York, PA. John and Catharina CRAMER moved to Seneca County, Ohio, where in 1861 their daughter Sarah Ann CRAMER married Augustus ELLIOTT (born in Virginia). Sarah and Augustus moved to Ionia County, Michigan. The CRAMER line has been well researched, and I have much information. All I have on the other lines are names and dates of the internet, none of which I've proven. I'd be glad to share the CRAMER information I have, and would love to hear more about the NEUDIG's, SCHLOTT's, and HOLDER's. My question: Is HOLDER the Anglicization of a German name? If so, what might that German name be? I understand the meaning of the English surname HOLDER is "landowner/holder" Thanks, Melinda McLemore Strong in Texas

    1. Re: [PADutch] MYERS
    2. Alfred J. Spiry SR.
    3. While we are new to this site, we have noticed an immediate mistake that is being made in peoples search for their German ancestors. The original German surnames have been anglesized and need to be put back in their original form. Examples: SHANE = Schoen SHENK = Schenck MYERS = either Meyer or Maier or Mayer KELSALL = most likely Keltzel Margaret's Generation No. 4. JOHN 1 would have been Johann or Johannes (John is strictly English and not German) What you have to remember when these people arrived in Philadelphia the immigration officials were English and wrote down what they thought the name the heard should be spelled like. We may be wrong, so just ignore this posting.
