    2. Alan Scannell
    3. Well here we go again, I started to reply to Paul directly but decided to "publically" support him. From what I could see in the mail headers SEANOC was not sent mail directly but the messages were posted to the lists in the appropriate fashion. If anyone doesn't want mail that isn't specifically directed at them or that doesn't relate to their specific areas of interest, then this is really the wrong place to do "research". I sift through several hundred messages a week many (most sometimes) I delete without reading. Also, I've discovered new pieces of information, and new relatives through seeming unrelated mail and have contacted, and been contacted by others who, although the mail was about something else, have found connections through the "signatures". I also find interesting stories from others even though they're not related to me, right Vee :) I've also found some good information/contacts from other lists which were "advertised" on lists to which I subscribe. So in summary!!!! If you don't want to read unrelated mail, delete it. If the quantity of unrelated mail is too much for you, unsubscribe. If you feel the need to play with fire (ie. flame), go have a cookout. Relax, Let's enjoy ourselves! 3. I, too, lost relatives in 1917-8 Flu epidemic in NC. My grandmother and my uncle (age 19) died. It was a severe strain and they had very little medication. I may be wrong, but I believe that this strain was brought to the US by the returning GI's from WWI. > Good Searching - Good Finding - Good Luck! 2. Hi Joanne: Thanks for your response to my listing. Most of the info. I have about the BEAR family came from A Genealogy of the Bear Family & Biographical Record of the Descendants of Jacob Bear, 1747-1906 by Walter Scott Bear. Mr. Bear and my grandfather, George SCOVILLE, corresponded during the 1950's. They were cousins. Additional data was found on film at the LDS Family History Center; the Mennonite Family History, and Jane Evans Best. This research was done in 1992/93. and I was wondering if any more has been found on the marriages and wives of these families. Hans Jagely BAR siblings, Hans Rudolf, Elisbeth, Heinrich, Barbara, and Susanna. Hans Jagely (Jacob) BAR, I have he m. Anna Barbara FREDERICK, b. ca. 1680, Father Isaac and mother Mary. 1. HALLER from Alsace to PA (and VA)
    2. RICK CARPENTER
    3. Hello, Most of this info comes from Amelia Gilreath's Haller genealogy book. I am looking for information on the surnames of HALLER, MOYER, and FANSLER. These families all started out in the New World in Pennsylvania, but seemed to have moved to VA within 20-30 years of arrival. Petter HALLER (b. 1715 Matstall, Alsace), of Shenandoah Co VA, had his will dated 21 Dec 1796, proven 14 Jan 1800. Petter was the son of Heinrich HALLER (born ca 1689 in Wogenhausen, Kanton Zurich, Switzerland, died ca 1761 in Cocalico Township, Pennsylvania) and Anna Catharina CARLE (born ca 1693 in Diemptig, Kanton Berne, Switzerland, died ca 1754 in Pennsylvania). In Petter's will he does not mention his wife, who was (Anna?) Dorothea, but does mention: 1. son Peter HALLER 2. son Henry HALLER 3. dtr Margaret, married to Andrew FINTER 4. dtr Barbara "she being dumb" - Frederick FERNSLER and wife Barbara appointed guardians 5. dtr Catharine, "now the wife of Jacob SURBER" 6. dtr Elizabeth, married to John MILLER 7. dtr Ann Mary, married to George MOYER 8. dtr Catharine, Jr., married to Peter MILLER - ("Catharine, Jr." is an odd thing!) 9. dtr Christina, married to Philip GOETZ 10. Eve, married to John SHOEMAKER #5 Catharine Haller was previous married to Peter COFFELD. I am trying to find out about this Haller line as it relates to the SURBER line of PA and VA. Jacob Surber, who married #5 Catharine Haller, also married Catherine's neice Barbara (MOYER) FANSLER according to Gilreath's book. This Barbara Moyer was a "base-born" dtr of #4 Barbara Haller. I have info for a marriage of Barbara Moyer to Frederick FANCER 10 Jun 1793, Shenandoah Co VA, bondsman was Peter MILLER. This Frederick was the son of Barbara Haller's guardian Frederick Fernsler. Does anyone have further info on the Hallers, Moyers, or Fanslers? I am attempting to co-author a book on the Surber line, which came to Philadelphia from Switzerland in 1735, and these families are all interconnected. Alternative spellings for the above mentioned names are: HOLLAR, HOLLER COFFIELD, KOFFELT, KOFFIELD, CAFELD, GAUFELD FANCER, FANSLER, PFANTZLER SORBER, SERVER, SURBA (and even the mistranscription *L*URBER!) In 1796, after the Landis Mill Dam Incident, Peter sold his farm to Isaac Hershey and Peter and part of his family moved to the Shenandoah Valley Virginia. Of course they speak of Peter Landis b.4/27/1741 (wife: Eva Byers) Does anyone know anything about this incident? 1. Lancaster-York magazine
    2. anyone heard of it? I own pretty much its entire printing. This is a homemade magazine that was printed during the depression and contains unique local stuff, business advertising, stories etc. No copyright exists, and I will post some of this great stuff to a special page at the PDL webpage. The magazine is unique. I also own most of the "The Memorial Journal" the official organ of the Hans Herr Memorial Association, ca. 1895 and a trunkload of other antiquaria yet to be explored. Excerpts etc. will also appear on the Antiquaria page many new research references have been added to PDL webpage as well as other updating. New members should visit the site and read, print and save, sub, unsub info, dos and don'ts etc. The webpage serves as the list welcome/instruction letter. It is far easier for me to edit and far more readily accessible at all times than is the server issued welcome. rod

I have found funeral home directors to be one of the "forgotten sources" of genealogical information. I almost always go to them instead of asking for a state death certificate (remember funeral homes have all the same information on file too).We were able to find descendants of my husband's great great aunt because the funeral home gave us the name and address of the person who pays yearly to cut the grass on the grave....off the subject...sorry....back to the subject, the flu of 1918: One funeral home director (remember many of these are family businesses) told me that his grandfather told him that they were so busy during the flu epidemics that they usually didn't fill out all those "state forms", but they did keep their own records. So just as a reminder if you need a death certificate during this time or any "flu epidemic" times there may not be a official one filed with the state. Before I knew this I had written for a death certificate from the state and for $3.00 I was told "no record"...after I "discovered" funeral homes, I wrote to the two funeral homes in the town where they lived and both replied, one had nothing on file and one had dates, parents names, birthplace, etc. One funeral home when I wrote and asked for a specific person's info also sent me all the funerals he had on file with that surname...what a gift!!! 1. Great Illinois Resource
    2. I don't know how many of you are aware of what has been a great resource for me in Illinois. The Illinois State Historical Library has on microfilm most all old newspapers from all over Illinois all available for interlibrary loan. I have seen the book "Newspapers in the Historical Library" listing what is available here at the Rockford Library and there are newspapers on microfilm for most small towns all over the state with some back to the mid 1850's. I have been going through them for Leaf River, Ogle Co. and have found many old news stories about relatives such as obituaries, marriages, births, etc. The old newspapers have a lot of town gossip in them that can often help put together family members. I found an obit for my 2nd great grandfather who died in 1895 that prior to this, nobody seemed to know anything about. I found another news story from an 1885 newspaper about a relative who committed suicide. It takes time to go through the films but they have added so much to my collection. It is surprising how many small towns had newspapers back then. I have contacted the Springfield Library and they do not have any more books available but the Rockford Library has one and I imagine other libraries in the state do. Their address is Old State Capitol, Springfield, IL 62701. Another great thing about it is that there is no charge. They are available to any library in the U.S. with microfilm reading facilities. The library must handle the processing of the request. You are limited to 5 reels per request. You are allowed one month to read them but they do allow extensions. There is a complete list of instructions of the loan policy available in the Ogle Co. genealogy web site at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1958/ogle.html If you have any questions, please write to me....
