    3. Several days ago I contributed to this thread with my family's experience, i.e. an aunt who reported to Ft Riley, Kansas as a volunteer nurse in October 1918, only to be dead in less than two weeks. A fellow PD lister wrote me inquiring about this incident and I apparently inadvertantly deleted her message before I had a chance to respond to it. Will you please post you request again? 1. Re: Red Beet Eggs
    2. I have an international family since our kids are grown & lived all over the world. When our German son-in-law ,with our only daughter as his new bride, came to live with us for a while I introduced him to PENNA-DUTCH food which is quite different than German Food, he never saw or heard of Red Beet Eggs.(I just had a instant message conversation w/ a German friend I made on net, were both happily married, he has same name as one of my immigrants, given & sruname. & we talked at Easter & he never heard of Red Beet Eggs), Our sons (one of them)Canadian girl friend never saw or ate them before comming to Berks County & visiting us. Next we go to Michigan, where we made a PENNA-DUTCH Dinner for another son's wife's family, they were still eating Red Beet Eggs, which they never saw or ate, when we left to come home. And finally our daughter-in-law in California, same thing when we visited them, we took Lebanon Bologna, which they never ate, same goes for Red Beet Eggs I made while visiting. I will make them this holiday weekend for our son & family who live in Shartlesville, PA. because our kids say, "no one makes Red Beet Eggs like mom", they say that about all there favorite food because they know mom will make it for them. Everyone have a safe and good Holiday. Sylvia

    3. Hi Ken and All, Peter Coldham wrote several books , but one of my favorites is "Emigrants in Chains" it is very easy to read and follow and is loaded with information and some names. If you can get a copy is will morethan answer questions concerning prison ships. 2. Candy J. Gessat
    3. Mike, My mother still grows ground cherries. I remember my greatgrandfather grew tons of them. I'd go out in his couple acre garden and pick them off the vine and eat them. I was told they are from the tomato family. They are a yellowish green when ripe and taste something like a tomato. My understanding is they are called ground cherries because they look like cherries and are grown not to high off the ground. Hope this helps Good Luck Candy ---------- > From: Michae5045@aol.com > To: PENNA-DUTCH-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: ground cherries > Date: Friday, August 29, 1997 6:29 AM > > My great uncles in SE PA grew "ground cherries", a vine-like plant that had > small fruit with a paper-like skin that had to be peeled off. This is perhaps the third or fourth time I have seen a reference to this page without seeing a URL. I think it might reduce some of the newer members' confusion - and certainly my confusion - if you would tell us where the web page is. -- Jeffrey S. 1. Prison Ship from England
    2. Ken Walter
    3. Can someone provide some background info on this? 8 July 1685 "The following convicted before Chief Justice Jefferies at the Court of Oyer and Terminer for Dorset, Somerset and Devon for waging war against the King and sentenced to be transported to the Americas [sentence enrolled on 4 February 1691]: Francis Smith, . . . " Then follows a 4 page list of names, among which are possible WALTER ancestor candidates and aligned families. What does "Terminer for Dorset, etc." mean? What does "sentence enrolled on 4 February 1691" mean? Were these men engaged in a particular "war" with England? If so, what war would it have been? This information was found in COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS 1661-1699 by Peter Wilson Coldham on pages 523 - 526 inclusive. Ken Walter Pasco, WA

    1. ANNOUNCEMENT
    2. 1.The PDL surnames page will be edited and updated 9-2-1997. Would everyone who participates in the list please look at it between 9-2 and 9-7. The way it appears on 9-8 is how it will be printed and sent to LMHS, LCHS, BCHS, Northampton Co. HS, etc. If I made an error in your email address or your surnames please notify me by 9-7. 2.All new listmembers are requested to visit the PDL webpageand linked FAQ etc. pages. The PDL homepage serves in lieu of a welcome letter and details list conditions, etc. If you are too busy to read the posts made by the listowner and too busy to visit the website perhaps the list is not for you. Not being aware of list rules etc. does not mean that they do not apply. 3. LIST REMOVAL- In 15 months I have removed 5 people for different reasons and all for reasons which were/are well explained beforehand. If an address is removed by me, (very unlikely) the listmember would first receive a communication from me to that effect and will not be allowed to resubscribe. NOTE: you may be removed by the server, not me, and this happens somewhat frequently. solution:resubscribe. The rootsweb server is not like our previous server. If your mailbox is full or your server is down, rootsweb will not just keep sending me bounced mail messages like Maiser the previous server did. After 5 unsuccessful attempts to deliver mail to an address, for WHATEVER reason, rootsweb will remove the address from this list. You will receive a server generated message saying you have been removed. please resubscribe. 4.List ownership-the terms of a list are the prerogative of the listowner. Some persons seem to think the list works by magic and no individual is in control. That is incorrect, a listowner can stipulate that posts may be made only on Wednesdays and remove those who do not comply. If the terms of membership are not to your liking simply do not join or unsubscribe. Sending me screaming, flaming email as I received this morning(the mail included no explanation of what they were talking about) is not the way to go. I receive a ton of email and will have to be believed when I say I know in general what the majority consensus is on posts, terms and other list issues and the list "rules" reflect that consenus. There are several members who know that when a good suggestion is made to me it is implemented, the PDL web page represents one of those suggestions. Please make suggestions to me, not to the list. 5.For those that are unaware, there is a list one can join at rootsweb, the specific purpose of which is to announce new lists. I do not have the address at hand but when I get it, it will be posted to the PDL webpage. 6. Your web page, new or old. Feel free to include the address or a"see my web page at..." as a part of a post, but posts should not be made, the sole purpose of which, is to announce the webpage. Anyone who so chooses may have their webpage linked on the PDL listmember webpages page. Posts made which solely "announce" DAR, Civil War, USGenweb, or other "entity" sites are fine. Posts made SOLELY to announce an individual's webpage are not. There has been a surge in new members in the past 30 days or so and hopefully all will assimilate and the PD list will continue as it has, which despite occasional grumblings continues to grow at a healthy rate. rod

    1. What's going on?
    2. John Helmut Merz
    3. I am a subscriber to the Digest form of this list, and although I am not researching Pennsylvania Germans (you noticed me saying P-Germans and not P-Dutch, which all of you know is a misnomer anyway, and should be changed the earlier the better, see the web page of the Klutztown U.), I really enjoy reading most of the letters (I read them all at my convenience, and do not delete before having made sure I did not miss anything) I do enjoy reading the little tidbits about applebutter, pickled eggs and what have you, and many of your reader's letters put a smile on my face. So do not give up on this list, you are hurting yourself, even though your listowner has different ideas. And because he objects to what others take for granted, I will not put my URL on his page. John
