    1. Ognibene Surname Help
    2. Arthur Cloninger
    3. Friends, The young pastor at the United Methodist Church to which my family belongs, Michael Ognibene, was telling me the other day about his grandmother's cooking and recipes that were lost when she passed away. He told me that she had been born in Sicily and had come to the United States with his grandfather when she was young. He knows that he has relatives left behind in Sicily, but doesn't know who they are or how to contact them. I was just wondering if anyone on this listserv also happens to have Italian heritage (hopefully with the Ognibene surname in it) who can provide me with some websites or listservs where I can help him begin his search for his roots. I will appreciate any help that you can provide, as will Michael. Art Cloninger -- Arthur D. 2. SEE
    3. Hi, This is "Cats Meow" as I understand it, correct me or add to it if I am incorrect.... What started out as a "cottage industry"( in ones home) has grown to a multi million business. An artisan will sketch a towns buildings, then to the drawing board and a flatten mold or pattern is made, a piece of wood is cut, usually 1/2" thick. outlining the building. A person hand paints the building onto the piece of wood. A CAT is perched somewhere in or around the building. Thus, "Cats Meow' is created. People buy them much like the Hummel's or Precious Moments. The cat is a trademark of these wooden items. They have extended into nursery rhyme characters to fences and oil barrels. I think! :-) SEE seruffe@bgnet.bgsu.edu

Say the word 'Daniel" v-e-r-y slowly, especially at the "ni" & notice how your tongue is situated in your mouth. If just a tad further back on the tongue, if placed on the roof of your mouth, you get something that *may* sound like a "ng". I don't think that's too far-fetched, considering the different dialects *and* that the "English" were writing these names! I certainly would not dismiss this Dangel - I'd "go for it!" We've got to be *very* creative!! -Linnea

    2. "In the year 1719 some six thousand are said to have landed, in 1732 ten vessels with three thousand passengers, and Proud avers that in the year 1749 twelve thousand Germans arrived in the Province. Sypher claims that prior to 1727 fifty thousand people, mostly from the Rhine country, had emigrated to the Quaker colony. At the middle of the century the German population of Pennsylvania was about one-half the whole. Not until 1717 was any record of passengers kept, but as the stream began to flow in large mass the wise precaution of Lt. Governor Keith, requiring all immigrants to take the oath of allegiance and be registered in Philadelphia, furnished the historical data which the late Mr. I.D.Rupp has industriously gathered and embodied in his valuable Thirty Thousand Names. These lists of male immigrants over sixteen years of age began in 1727. It is possible they are incomplete. as there are gaps that may, and yet may not be explained, since these vessels all arrived at the same period of the year. Thus there are no records between October, 1727, and August 1728; September 1728, and August,1729; September, 1729, and August, 1730. In the last three weeks of 1732 no less than 1,500 people arrived, while in August and September, 1733. 1,369 are reported.

    1. Bortz family:
    2. Timothy Anderson
    3. Has anyone found a homeland/immigration date for the Georg Adam Bortz who bought land in Lower Macungie Twp., present-day Lehigh Co., in 1750? Anyone trace the families of any of Georg Adam's children other than Michael, b. 1758, recorded in Lehigh Luth. Ch., Lower Macungie? My line is through Michael, who migrated to Westmoreland County, PA in early 1800s. I have fairly good records for his family but have nothing on marriages, children, or possible migrations of other of Georg Adam's children. Lehigh Luth. Church lists the births/baptisms of five children for Georg Adam and Barbara Bortz. Anyone find any other children? Has anyone found any probate records for Georg Adam? Lastly, (for now), has anyone made a connection between Georg Adam and the other Bortz families that eventually appear in the Lehigh Church records? I've been told that these later families immigrated to America in 1760s. Any little tidbit would be welcome! Candy

    1. Off-topic - Help Needed with Old Document!!
    2. Greetings, fellow Rooters! I recently received the following "roundabout" plea for help in dealing with an old, fragile, irreplaceable document -- from 1715!!! Unfortunately, I have no such experience, but I'm trying to help a fellow rooter. My "cyberpal" Gale wrote: >Do any of you have any experience with this kind of thing? I do not know beyond placing it in archival paper and keeping out of light. She would like to get it copied so she can share. I suggest getting one laser copy and then doing reproductions from it. But she still needs to know how to care for the original. If you have any experience with this or know someone who does, will you reply? > Her cousin, who actually *has* the document, asked Gale: >>A document dated 1715!!! It is the original and is falling apart, but can be read for the most part. I am scared to handle it much and I need to take it and have it restored, but am even scared to do that - it is so fragile. It is a land transfer, and speaks of a Francis Thornton Jr. of St. Mary's Co., VA, and Anthony Thorton of St. Mark's Parish. It is from John Knight and his wife Catherine to Anthony. I was shocked when I found it in the, get this, cardboard box full of letters and obits that my cousin Herrick had and didn't know what to do with. So glad I went to visit her before she died. She was going to give it all to the historical society and told me to take what I wanted.>> Please reply to: GaleFuller@aol.com & copy me at: ALurie6171@aol.com Thanks!
