After listening to all children this evening threatening to Trick or Treat, I can only wonder what happened to "help the poor?" Is/was this second phrase one used by post depression babies (me?) in the Midwest or are there no poor people any more? Just curious. Lurking in Livonia ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== New? Synder - are you sure letters were not transposed? Sylvia
Schneider is the German spelling which means Taylor. Snyder is the English version of Snyder. If your Snyder immigrants were Germanic it was Schneider before they came over. Remember the Ships were English and quite a few names were on the ship lists were anglicized by the Englishmen. Dictionary of German Names by Hans Bahlow. Schneider: (tailor), Schneider(s) (Rhine area.) Here in Berks Co., PA. both spellings are used for the Germanic Ancestory, I find it in my family. I want to thank all who responded, and there were a lot of you, to my question about the Penna German church records on CD's. There seems to be some difference of opinion as to whether they are worth having, but a number of people who do have them looked for my Penrose FRANK and there is unanimous agreement that he is not there, nor is he on the Vital Statistics CD's that some of you also have and went far beyond the call and also looked for him on those. So I really appreciate this and I will not be buying them in the near future. It looks as if I may have to get down to some serious work and look for him in the census. And look harder for his wife, Mary E. SCHULTZ, b 1849. She is supposed to have had a brother named William SCHULTZ who was a doctor; if this is true he must have left a paper trail. Anyone know of such a person? It may have been spelled SHULTZ. I suppose he was born in the 1840s or 1850s, somewhere down there in Dauphin or Lancaster or Berks or who knows counties. He also ended up in Erie. -- jan <janiceaf@ix.netcom.com> Researching names: FRANK, KELLER, LUPHER/LUPFER, PENROSE, SCHULTZ, TAYLOR ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== New? Hello there! I wonder if someone can send me the address and the phone number for these 2 churches. One is in Souderton, the other in the Franconia Township. I am in WI and I have no idea what area code I'll need or what the town would be that the Franconia church would be under. Looking for Little Zion Indianfield Church in Franconia Township..it used to be called Indianfield Lutheran Church. It would also help if I could get the Pastor's names, but if not, that's ok...would be happy with addresses and phone numbers. The other church would be Emmanuel Lutheran, on W. Broad St. in Souderton. Thank you very much for your help...this will help me locate church record's on my gggg grandparent's...so any help is deeply appreciated. Everyone have a GREAT day! I am sending via E-mail, information from my many records, I was just sending to Strasser List, just started sending to Keim List, and thought while I have the books out I should send to all my Name Lists. Since I type all by hand, I'm not a fast typist, be patient. I will send as fast as I can. I will start the Lists with "The Reading Adler" Deaths - 1797 to 1824. I will send all to the PENNA-DUTCH LIST, since they are all PENNA-DUTCH names. Sylvia Ann Moyer Graybill P.S.I have lived in Berks County all my life. I will also put other names on the PENNA-DUTCH LIST other names I know subscribers are looking for. These "Reading Adler" German Newspapers of Reading, PA. Covers Berks Co. and sometimes other counties or States if the deceased lived in Berks Co. at one time or has relatives in Berks Co. at the time the deceased passed away. Bear in mind that these "Obits" are from a "German Language Newspaper" therefore many names retain their "German Spelling". The "Reading Adler Obits" will cover from 1797 to 1884. I have the years in these notebooks: 1797 to 1824; 1825 to 1850; 1860 to 1870; 1868 to 1876; and 1877 to 1884. Will present one book at a time. ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== New? Oct. 7th(Tuesday) the Archives in Prothonatary opened in the Berks County Courthouse, Reading, Pennsylvania. Every Tuesday I volunteer, this was the 3rd. Tuesday. I help the Patrons, but at the same time I aquainting myself w/ the records. Each Tuesday I have found something of value, since all my direct lines & my husband's mothers direct line stayed in Berks County, I can find quite a few things. Last week I found Douglas (My husband) GGrandfather & GGGRanfather(father & son) were in a baroom brawl in a bar on Penn St., Reading. This week I found my 3rd Great Granparents were divorced in 1881. The 1880 census he was living w/ a son & she was living alone, I thought they just lived apart. They were about 56 years old when divorced. She died around 1885, he remarried and had a son in 1896, he was 70 years old. There is an interesting index to Appearances, it is called: Divorces, Restraints, Lunatics, Drunkards. These start 1884 to I know we have in Archives to 1950's. We have records starting 1766. I am just learning myself, but if you had people in Berks Co. come to visit us, it is fun going through these old Books. Do not ask me to lookup anything, I just don't have time. Hello lists, I am attempting to co-author a book on this SURBER family. The Surber family originated in Canton Zurich. Heinrich Surber, age 50, wife Hannah/Kleinanna, son Heinrich, age 15, and daughter Verena, age 5, came to Philadelphia in 1735 aboard the ship Mercury. There is no further mention of Hannah/Kleinaa after the arrival. Verena may or may not have stayed in Pennsylvania, while father Henry and son Henry made their way to Old Frederick County (Shenandoah area), Virginia by 1752-54. From there, the family spread southwestward up the Valley, then over westward. My particular line went to Kentucky in the early 1810s, and then on to West Texas in 1870. The earliest generations tended to marry within the same Swiss German group coming from Pennsylvania to Virginia. We are trying to completely cover five generations down from the son Henry SURBER (baptised 8 Jan 1718 in Steinmaur, Dielsdorf District, Canton Zurich; died ca 1795 in Botetourt County, Virginia; wife unknown). The sixth generation includes living persons, so we will stop at five generations. We have lots of information to share about this family and the families which married into it. The easiest thing would be for anyone to ask me questions about them. I will attempt as complete an answer as possible. From your questions and any follow-up conversations, I can hopefully tell where you are in your research and what information you may have that I may need. I can post some of the associated family names if anyone wishes. If I have corresponded with anyone in the past about this line, hopefully I have discovered more information since then, so please don't hesitate to re-ask any questions. And, if I don't answer right away, keep after me! I downloaded that shareware language translation program that someone posted a message about the other day. You know, for someone who didn't know a language it might be helpful. It's only $15 and translates German, French, Swedish and two other languages back and forth to English. The translations are crude; you really wouldn't want to write a letter to someone with it and expect them to understand what you were writing about, but if you had an old document in a foreign language and ran it through the translator, you'd get a rough idea about what it was about. I did this with a letter that I had written in German, and translated it back into English. There were quite a few words it couldn't translate (could this be my choice of archiaic words from my 30 year old German dictionary ;-) ) and for some words it used different meanings than what I had intended, but you could get the general sense of what I had written to my cousin. For $15 it wasn't bad for what you got and could be a real help for those with no high school language education, particularly if you had to translate words from one of the less common languages like Swedish or Danish. And as I write this, I'm at a computer at work on a break and the program is at home, so I'm blanking on the name and URL. If anybody was interested, let me know and I'll post the URL to the group. Hope this is close enough to be on topic Rod - I think it will be a help for some readers. Bob Lamparter Selinsgrove, PA Interested in the surname LAMPARTER anywhere.
